On April 12, 1912, the world’s largest ever known ship sank. The Titanic was not only unexpected because it was described as “unsinkable,” but was very tragic. Of the 2,201 people who boarded The Titanic, only 709 survived (Baldwin, “R.M.S. Titanic” and Fowler, A History in Numbers). Miss Jessie Allis Mary Goodwin was one of the unfortunate passengers who did not survive. She and her family, like most of the third class passengers, were lost in the sinking (G. Bell). The Titanic sunk primarily because of the arrogance of the passengers and crew in charge who would not accept the fact that the “great and mighty” Titanic could sink. When the Titanic was warned about being surrounded by ice, they ignored it and told the Californian to shut up and keep out. From the calm, dark waters, where the floating lifeboats move, there goes up, in the white of her passing, “one long continuous moan” ( Baldwin, page 10). The Titanic sinking was something no one could ever imagine happening, and brings up a lot of sad emotions. The crew not only let their pride get in the way of the ship, but they let it, along with biased judgements get in the way of people's lives. A great deal of the passengers were victimized and ended up dying since the ones in charge belittled those in a lower class or with less money. Hence the misjudgment and unpreparedness of the crew, there were few survivors. However, after the tragedy occurred, it helped other ships in the long run. Now, ships are more prepared with additional lifeboats and prepare the passengers in case an accident were to happen. In addition, crew and passengers of boats are more cautious, knowing that something bad can happen. Altogether, the sinking of the Titanic resulted in positive and negative
