The works of art I have chosen to discuss are Titian’s Bacchus and Ariadne, Cranach’s Cupid complaining to Venus and Giambologna’s Mercury. Bacchus and Ariadne, was one of three works commissioned by Alfonso d’Este for his private apartments. Painted in 1523-4, Titian depicts Bacchus (the god of wine) and his followers on return from India, celebrating their win in war. Titian shows this celebration through the movement of the figures, which suggest they are dancing and drinking. For example, Bacchus rides in on a chariot lead by two cheetahs, followed by the intoxication of his revellers behind him. This movement occurs in a diagonal direction, where the figures come forward into the foreground, suggesting speed and excitement. The cheetahs not only symbolise the athleticism of Bacchus, which is also emphasised by his pose but it shows that Titian has used contemporary sources to enhance his representation of antiquity by painting the cheetahs from d’Este’s private zoo, instead of from his own imagination. His works were inspired by social and political elements which was atypical of the Renaissance culture. However, the Venetian Renaissance came later than the Florentine or Roman Renaissance and by the time of its assumption, studies of sciences such as astronomy, dynamism of the universe, and navigation made Venetians question the nature of everything around them, referring to history for answers. Accordingly, artists focused on the nature of color and other observable natural occurrences, whereas the Florentine and Romans focused on the composition and geometry of that which they depict. Bellini’s 1506 painting An Episode from the Life of Publius Cornelius Scipio is no exception to the Venetian trend; it is nature-inspired and though-provoking, depicting the Roman General Publius Cornelius Scipio and his men gathering hostages after a victory in Carthage. The painter uses oil on canvas as his media because oil enables the artist to change color, texture, or the form of the figures at any time. And you can see how important the use of oil was to effectively impact the responses from the audience to see many details of the painting and make a conclusion of what the painting is conveying to the individual viewer or to the masses. I couldn’t keep my eyes away and at first I couldn’t pinpoint why Lotto’s painting was striking a profound cord in me. What made it so easily noticeable was the vibrant coral color of the Virgin’s dress and the deep pastel blue that drapes on her lap.
