Realize: To Most People, It’s Only a Job
Colleagues who have worked closely with me would describe my attitude as friendly, respectful, cooperative, loyal, caring and ready to help out, always putting forth the extra effort. I thoroughly enjoyed my last job and the relationships I formed were invaluable. I know they would describe me as a positive influence to be around and one with a charismatic instinct. I took pleasure in having fun at work telling jokes or sharing stories. They would describe my attitude toward personal life as one that values friendship, family, social and physical activities. My employees know I cared for them professionally and personally. I tried to have as much fun inside work as I did outside. I believe one of the major keys to happiness and well-being is having a good work/life relationship.
In Walt’s instance, his employees would describe his attitude towards work of one that is inflexible, unprincipled, has very high standards, but motivated and results oriented. He was a successful manager and it proved to be that way, but his demands were extremely high. His work expectations were not the same as his employees. In some instances, his practices and behavior didn’t act in accordance with moral principles. His employee’s weren’t enjoying work or being acknowledged for their work. In some respects, Walt was too self indulged and only cared about his own desires.
For Walt, there wasn’t much time for a personal life or a real work/life balance. He took much more pride in working hard than taking time for life outside of work. His employees seem disgruntled and unhappy about some of the work demands in correlation to their own personal lives. He rescheduled planned employee vacations and even enjoying a full lunch break was looked down upon. He had a high turnover rate and employees were not being paid properly for time worked.
You can make a distinction between setting an example and making covert demands by having clear expectations and proper communication with your employees. To be an effective leader it requires a clear and an unambiguous sense of direction and expectations that are known and understood by all. People want and need continued balanced performance feedback and recognition for their efforts.
Walt set examples by his pursuit of hard work. He came in to work early, worked through lunch and even stayed late. He expected employees to work overtime, to forgo family and personal interests and have work be at the center of their lives. He didn’t realize the difference between setting an example and making a covert demand.
Walt needed to have better communication with his employees and listen to their ideas and concepts. Walt had frustrations within the firm and he struggled with grasping the concept of not openly acknowledging demands. Walt set great examples through his dedication and commitment to hard work at his job, but he could have set better demands by setting goals and rewards for employee satisfaction.
I balance my work life by creating activities outside of work. A couple days a week I’ll get together with friends for “steak night” or playing in a co-ed softball league. My work and personal life has a give and take balance. Some nights require more attention at work with meetings that run late or projects that need to be completed. I make sure that my personal life gets enough attention by communicating effectively with my friends and family. Most of my friends and family understand my work life and know it is not a normal 9 to 5 job. For the most part, they understood my profession and what it took to succeed at a high level.
Iv’e created a schedule that allows myself to spend time concentrating on my personal life. I focus on friends and family members, and allow myself the opportunity to participate in important traditions and holidays. I enjoy activities with family members and friends. We bike ride, camp, watch TV shows, work out, travel, etc.
In today’s world, it can be very stressful balancing the opportunities of work and the demands of our personal life. Having a good attitude and a sense of self awareness can be crucial to your success. Every human being has varying reasons for working, but we all work because we want to obtain something that we need. What we obtain from work impacts our motivation, morale, and the quality of life. Treating employees with respect and thinking about their needs will fulfill a positive work environment.

Loving Ones Job

...Loving one’s job: What it means for employees today Loving one’s job: What it means for employees today INSIDE THIS ISSUE The most recurrent factor in our answers is the opportunity for advancement. Regardless of the interviewee’s field of work, this category was present. We can safely say that it is strong motivator. Since only two people did not mention money as one of the primary factors in choosing one’s job, we began to think that there was a possibility that the opportunity for advancement might not only be the need for recognition and accomplishment, but also for the need of a higher salary. If opportunity for advancement is a desire for a high salary, doesn’t it imply that money is a motivator? Further questioning and studies in that area could be interesting. So, is the desire for advancement a motivator or a hygiene factor? Hertzberg would mark it into hygiene, however opportunity for advancement may also translate into a desire for a bigger salary. To put it into layman's term: “It’s okay if my salary is small now, because if I advance on the social ladder, it will get bigger!” So even though employees are ready to sacrifice their desire for money at the present time, it doesn’t mean they do not aspire for it. Herzberg’s studies are valid, but other opinions must be taken into consideration. The most recurrent factor in our answers is the opportunity for advancement. Regardless of the interviewee’s field of work, this category was present. We...

The Pursuit for Happiness

...The Pursuit for Happiness Pablo Pereira Concha LDS Business College Pablo Concha Professor Rice ENG 101 3/17/2015 The Pursuit for Happiness Aristotle, the great philosopher, once said: “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” When asked about what they really want in life, most people include the word happiness on the list. Today happiness is viewed in many different ways. Everyone defines happiness according to their personal perspective. Whatever it is that makes you happy is determined by you, and only you. This difference is what makes the world interesting. Like everything else in life, happiness is most commonly discussed in three different aspects of life, personal, professional, and spiritual. There are several simple things can be done to increase happiness in each aspect of life. Even though different goals and actions are set for each aspect, analyzing them make us conclude that somehow they can connect and affect each other. Analyzing them makes us also conclude that if there’s one aspect that can affect all the others, that would be the spiritual. We live in a world that is progressing at such a fast pace that sometimes we wonder if we can catch up. But yet, when it comes to understanding ourselves and our surroundings, we seem to be trapped in the shallow. Being trapped in the shallow can create a sense that something is missing, an inner hole. We search and search for filling up that empty spot...

Organiztional Culture

...Lessons for Staying in Steve Jobs' Good Graces News Analysis: Apple's top iPhone executive has left the company over reports that he didn't fit into Apple's corporate culture. So, maybe it's time for a review of what Apple's culture is really all about. The announcement that Apple Senior Vice President Mark Papermaster left Apple sent shockwaves through the tech industry. Papermaster came to Apple from IBM after the companies waged a short-lived battle over exactly when he could start working at the hardware company. After that, he took over the iPhone and iPod Touch and, at least to outsiders, did a fine job of delivering products that consumers wanted. His departure from Apple was very much a surprise.  But it didn't take long for some details and speculation about the reasons for Papermaster's departure from anonymous sources to make their way into news reports. One claim made by the Wall Street Journal stood out. The publication said that its sources claimed Papermaster didn't match well with Apple's corporate culture. And as those problems persisted, Steve Jobs started losing faith in his ability to lead the mobile devices division.   Admittedly, the Wall Street Journal's report has not been confirmed by Apple or Papermaster, so it's impossible to say why he really left. But the source's claim of cultural incompatibility seems to be something that some employees suffer from at Apple. And that's unfortunate because Jobs has created one of the most distinct corporate cultures...

It may be an old city, but it is up to date, as it has to so it can survive. It may look old, but on the inside, it’s just as modern as any other city. One of the reasons I was...

6 Main Keys of Apple

...established deep, lasting bonds with their customers. Apple, of course, is the archetypal emotional brand. It's not just intimate with its customers; it is loved. "Apple is about imagination, design and innovation;" Gobe argued that, in some cases, branding has become as powerful as religion”. Research shows that Apple triggers a religious reaction from certain consumers. Of course when it’s considered as religion, we must have the believers- in this case, they are called “Apple fanboy”. These are notoriously vocal about the superiority of their platform of choice. Emotional brand is always about people the company has established a "heartfelt connection" with its customers. This can take several forms, from building trust to establishing a community around a product. In Apple's case, its products are designed around people: "Take the iPod, it brings an emotional, sensory experience to computing," Gobe said. "Apple's design is people-driven." In short, for Apple, brands are more important than products. Products have limited life cycles, but brands -- if managed well -- last forever. Customer Service: Apple takes the customer service to another level. When it comes to retail, Apple strikes all the right chords: an attractive physical store that mirrors the company’s holistic design, informative and knowledgeable salespeople with true dedication to customers.
