The National Anthem is something that United States citizens have been able to relate to each other with for many years. It is the one thing that held the people together that lived through so many tough times including World War 1 and Boston Bombing. The protestors, even though they are protesting it, relate to it. There are two sides – respect it and stand when it is being played or sit. Toni Smith writes, “A Leader is more than a messenger” explaining how the National Anthem relates to sports. Smith expresses her opinion about politics being involved in the world of sports. She does not believe that it should be required at a sporting event for everyone to stand for the National Anthem. The one that she incorporates into everything, though, is the use of pathos. Smith expresses how she feels about the standing during the National Anthem “rule.” She uses different emotion to convey to message. She talks about how celebrities and pro-athletes impact things at a greater level. “If athletes promote only popular opinions, then their positions as role models and leaders should be revoked and replaced with messengers.” She points out things like this that use pathos to express her opinions on the situation. It is easy to see what side she sides with in this argument. She tries to convince other people or the readers to feel the same thing she does by the way she writes. There are two obvious sides in this argument. One side being the side Smith is on and the other being the side Jennifer Dignan who writes, “Why Do We Sing the National Anthem at Games?” Dignan explains the importance of the National Anthem and the background of why it was played at sports games to start with.
