Too Late to Save the World?

Is it too late to save the world? Probably not! Perhaps the real question should be if society will actually do something about it or not. Perhaps the world leaders are more interested in money than the welfare of the environment.

Money makes the world go round, this could be true from an economical point of view but from the environmental aspect money is being fed into the wrong areas and screeching the world to a halt. The world should be putting plans into action at this stage in the earths rescue. Instead scientists are still trying to ‘understand’ what is going on. This is just taking up more and more time, leaving the earth to rot as they do their ‘research.’

There are many different ways that we as the earths population are destroying the environment. For example, the tall cooling towers used by industries. They do not remove pollutants but simply push them higher into the atmosphere, in this way they reduce their concentration at that particular area. The pollutants may then travel over large distances and produce negative effects in areas far away from the original site.

This is only one example of how we are destroying the environment. Power stations are another source. These power stations make use of the cooling towers mentioned earlier, they also emit poisonous gasses such as some nitrogen oxides and probably more dangerous, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

What are the consequences of this pollution? We have all heard about the hole in the ozone layer, global warming or even the famous armageggon. These are more drastic examples, why not look at some cases that have already happened. For instance acid rain is a regular occurrence all around the world. “It forms when oxides of sulphur and nitrogen combine with atmospheric moisture to yield sulphuric and nitric acids, which may then be carried long

Our World Is Teetering on the Edge

...Our world is teetering on the edge of a chasm of destruction. Earl Nightingale says, "Our environment, the world in which we live and work, is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations". If we expect our planet to be around for the future, then we need to change our attitudes now. We cannot wait until it is too late before we decide to act. We need a wakeup call ... and soon. Global warming, deforestation, strip mining, frakking for natural gas deposits, depletion of our renewable sources and carbon emissions are all contributing to mankind's ever encroaching, and too often, indelible carbon footprint. Take a look at some of the statistics - they represent an alarming reality. In recent years roughly 27,000 plant and animal species have become extinct; 85% of the larger fish species in the oceans are no longer around; there is more and more plastic in the oceans and less and less phytoplankton and more and more forests, grasslands and prairies are being destroyed by humanity's population explosion. The population explosion on Earth is growing at a rapid rate and man's seemingly insatiable need is encroaching ever further on the land and the oceans in our quest to feed ourselves; accommodate ourselves and continually, and too often exponentially, develop our technological and industrial appetites and needs. We are spraying significant quantities of pesticides and chemicals to try and grow sufficient food; we are exploiting our renewable resources like fish...

Greenery

...society. There are many environmental issues facing our green world today. We the new generation owe the basic responsibility of protecting our green world. Some of the issues which we can focus on to improve the earth's environment are mentioned below; Save fuel The biggest issue the world faces today; it is our dependence on oil. This dependence we have is so strong that, we have started wars for oil. It is time we do something about it and try and find an alternative form of energy. Because soon this problem will be too much for us to handle and by then it will be too late. Save energy o Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs. o Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out. o Unplug appliances when you're not using them. Or, use a "smart" power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts energy use. o Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water. o Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying. Save water o Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too. o Plant drought-tolerant native plants in your garden. Many plants need minimal watering. Find out which occur naturally in your area. Save Trees o Illegal cutting of trees shall be stopped. This reminds...

Why School Should Start Later

...Do you want smarter people in our society? Many schools start late and there are not a lot of benefits for that. Sea Turtles Threatened with Extinctions

...Abstract The topic of this paper is Sea turtles endangered by Global warming. It argues that global warming have a bad effect on the environment and threatens some species in the world. In the specially, sea turtles which is the oldest species in live in the world so we need to find solutions to protect this specie. There are three reasons for this argument. The first is that we need to find solutions to decrease global warming. The second is that we need to decrease the pollution due to human. Finally, protect the sea turtle of human and predators. Sea Turtles threatened with extinction A lot of species are endangered because of global warming and more specifically the Sea turtle, which is the oldest species known in the world (Velaquez-Manoff 2007); it lived during the dinosaurs. Now the change of the climate threatens these species, and if we don’t do something in a hurry, this species will disappear. The increasing temperature (more than 2 degrees these last years) have an impact directly on the turtle’s eggs (Velaquez-Manoff 2007, Brahic 2007). The problem is that more females than males are born; that means the future will be difficult for reproduction. According to WWF (2007), it’s not only the future population which is in peril, because there is also habitat loss and degradation, pollution, disease because of human and marine pollution, and natural predators. As Bhattacharya (2007) said, we need to do something and we can already...

Reaction Paper Home

...Samantha George L. Baysa September 24, 2014 BSABE Movie: Home Reaction Paper Earth was perfect, a miracle perhaps. Everything was linked. Every organism has its own role and a place in this big world, none was futile. The Earth and all the organisms on it were balanced, under a fragile harmony- until humans came. From being nomadic, hunting food for survival, humans settled down. Then, land, water and life combined. We are benefiting from the 400 billion year legacy of the Earth. We get what we need from her- food, shelter, everything. But from needs, wants grew and now, we just can’t get enough. We want everything and by doing all the experiments and all the activities, we are slowly disrupting the balance of life on Earth. We just ruined the atmosphere; we just made the temperature high; now, the sea level is rising, small islands are gone. Pollution is everywhere and we are the guilty suspect. We are triggering the crises of habitat destruction, energy depletion, climate disruption, degradation...of the environment, health, economic disparity, and more. Human population is almost equivalent to the number of car, cars that emit bad smoke that ruins the atmosphere. And if I continue to rant all of the things we have done, this one page will never be enough. But everything will be a great punch to us someday; we are...

The Inconvenient Truht

...Before It Is Too Late The current climate our planet has these days is unusually hot compared to the previous decades. This is so because of global warming. It has been Al Gore’s campaign during the U.S. federal elections since America has been the biggest contributors to global warming. However, Americans have not yet realized then how global warming could bring abrupt changes worldwide. All they were after was reform in their government. Global warming, as described in the film An Inconvenient Truth, is the trapping of green house grasses causing the earth to be hot and is bound to get worse over the years. It is because of the thinning of the ozone layer, which guards every living individual in the planet from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It is also mentioned that the more carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere, the more heat is trapped in the earth. According to the researches in the film, 40% of the world is dependent with their drinking water from the rivers and springs of Himalayas. Antarctica, Patagonia and other parts of the world covered with ice are gradually melting. Dry lands, on the other hand, get parched, thus making it unsuitable for vegetation. The comparison of carbon dioxide composition in the atmosphere for the past 600,000 years has been shown in the film and for the graph for year 2005 was way shoddier to the previous years. This year had the highest carbon dioxide composition in the atmosphere. With global warming, there will also be a...

Climate Change

...Climate change has damage the planet beyond repair. Melissa Giannotti (1100 words) ‘Unless we announce a disasters, no one will listen’ (J.Houghton, 1994). The continuous struggle to halt climate change and save the world is perhaps the biggest challenge the humanity has ever faced. The world-threatening rise in temperatures, the extinction of species and the flooding of oceans, is coming under challenge as never before. The world has known about global warming since the late 1970s, but since that time a little has been done to halt it. This essay sets out to examine why is too late to find a solution to save the planet. The first thing to get straight is to define the meaning of climate change. Climate change involves any changes in weather patterns, such as colder, wetter, cloudier, and windier condition. According to McGuire (2008,a), over the 4.6 billion year history of our planet, the climate has constantly changed in response to several factors. Until now, many have argued that since the industrialization has started, more greenhouses have been added to the atmosphere, causing the warming Earth’s climate. In fact, research conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2013) states that the warming of the climate system is certain. Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer than any previous decade since the 1850. For instance, the evidence demonstrate a clear increase in warming of 0.85 [0.65 to1.06]°C over the period 1880 to 2012...
