ANSWER FOR EXERCISE IN ROSS’s BOOK (CHAPTER 20, page 721-722, Question 11, 12 & 20)
11. The carrying costs are the average inventory times the cost of carrying an individual unit, so: Carrying costs = (2,500/2)($9) = $11,250 The order costs are the number of orders times the cost of an order, so: Order costs = (52)($1,700) = $88,400 The economic order quantity is: EOQ = [(2T × F)/CC]1/2 EOQ = [2(52)(2,500)($1,700)/$9]1/2 EOQ = 7,007.93 The firm’s policy is not optimal, since the carrying costs and the order costs are not equal. The company should increase the order size and decrease the number of orders. 12. The carrying costs are the average inventory times the cost of carrying an individual unit, so: Carrying costs = (300/2)($41) = $6,150 The order costs are the number of orders times the cost of an order, so: Restocking costs = 52($95) = $4,940 The economic order quantity is: EOQ = [(2T × F)/CC]1/2 EOQ = [2(52)(300)($95)/$41]1/2 EOQ = 268.87 The number of orders per year will be the total units sold per year divided by the EOQ, so: Number of orders per year = 52(300)/268.87 Number of orders per year = 58.02 The firm’s policy is not optimal, since the carrying costs and the order costs are not equal. The company should decrease the order size and increase the number of orders. 20. Since the company sells 700 suits per week, and there are 52 weeks per year, the total number of suits sold is: Total suits sold = 700 × 52 = 36,400 And, the EOQ is 500 suits, so the number of orders per year is: Orders per year = 36,400 / 500 = 72.80 To determine the day when the next order is placed, we need to determine when the last order was placed. Since the suits arrived on Monday and there is a 3 day delay from the time the order was placed until the suits arrive, the last order was placed Friday. Since there are five days between the orders, the next order will be placed on Wednesday Alternatively, we could consider that the store sells 100 suits per day (700 per week / 7 days). This implies that the store will be at the safety stock of 100 suits on Saturday when it opens. Since the suits must arrive before the store opens on Saturday, they should be ordered 3 days prior to account for the delivery time, which again means the suits should be ordered in Wednesday.

Mit Topic Sentences

...Topic Sentences: Fact Sheet and Examples [A student sent me this explanation he found on the internet. Other students have told me the explanation was useful. My comments are in red.] A topic sentence "brings to the paragraph not only order but also unity," and it "announces the topic and an attitude toward it" (Hall 198). As Rise B. Axelrod notes, [My favorite definition:] "A topic sentence lets readers know the focus of a paragraph in simple and direct terms" (406). Sometimes we say that the topic sentence embodies the paragraph's organizing idea or its controlling idea. A topic sentence performs at least some of the following functions:   1. Announces the topic: "A polar bear walks in a way all its own." - Barry Lopez [This is the most common function for a topic sentence. In WA 2, look for the sentence that states the topic of most or all of the other sentences in the paragraph.]   2. Makes a transition from the previous paragraph: "Like sensations, ideas are neither true nor false." - Mortimer J. Adler [A more sophisticated topic sentence summarizes the topic of the last paragraph and announce the topic of the current one, which “connects” the two ideas in the reader’s mind.]   3. Asks and answers a rhetorical question: "What about motion that is too slow to be seen by the human eye? That problem has been solved by the use of the time-lapse camera." - James C. Rettie [The “ask-answer” topic sentences is effectively draws in the reader,...

...High interest rates create an unwillingness to spend money. Because consumers know that they will pay more over the course of the loan, they might choose to postpone buying high items such as cars and homes. Higher interest rates cause deflation, which means the purchasing power of the dollar is stronger. Debt deflation reduces personal wealth and aggravates an economic downturn. Many parties control interest rates, including banks and, the Federal Reserve. These institutions decide which interest rates to charge to other banks, companies in need of business loans and individuals wishing to buy a mortgage. The rate charged to consumers is not compatible: While borrowers with a high credit score receive lower interest rates, people with poor credit scores receive higher interest rates. Low interest rates affect purchasing habits as well. The Federal Reserve sets a low discount rate to inspire banks to issue more loans to each other and to consumers. When consumers and businesses have easier access to credit, they spend more money. In most cases, low mortgage rates equate to more home purchases and low credit card rates cause people to spend more on credit. However, low interest rates and an increase in the money supply means the dollar weakens. Businesses that rely on foreign vendors will see an increase in the cost of production because of the changes in the exchange rate. Changing the procure routine of banks and consumers through interest rates is a long standing procedure...

How to Write a Compare &Contrast Essay

...structure, making any ingenuity to fall by the wayside. Go over the rules on how to write a general essay, and then structure your compare/contrast essay in one of the following two formats: 1. Introduction 2. Your introduction — like the five-paragraph-essay, should open generally (with a quotation, anecdote, generalization), and lead into the thesis statement. 3. Topic 1 4. This next portion of your essay (which may consist of one paragraph or several) should cover only the first topic of the comparison and contrast. Compare/Contrast essays take two topics and illustrate how they are similar and dissimilar. Do not mention topic 2 in this first portion. 5. Topic 2 6. This next portion of your essay (which may also consist of one or more paragraphs) should cover the second of the two topics. Do not discuss Topic 1 in this section. Since you have already gone into great detail about it, you may allude to Topic 1 briefly; however, do not analyze Topic 1 in this section. This portion of the paper is to discuss Topic 2 in great detail. 7. Topics 1 and 2 Together 8. Now that you have analyzed both Topic 1 and Topic 2 independently, now it is time to analyze them together. This section may also be one or several paragraphs. 9. Conclusion 10. I think my topics did address my thesis statement the correct way. My paragraphs did not have a strong closing to support my topic. My essay only had little coherence; It flowed in certain portions of the essay. I think the order of my essay could have been revised from less important to most important. I think I did have strong evidence to support my topic but I could’ve used more vivid language. I also think the essay did reflect the evidence and explained the importance. I didn’t use many transitions in the essay neither. I think I could have used more transitional words to help my essay flow better. My goal when rewriting my essay is to be as vivid as possible. I admit my rough draft had many errors but I will try my best to avoid those errors when writing my final draft. My final draft will have better sentence structure and more transitions to help my essay flow better. I will try my best to support my topics in each paragraph so my essay. My final draft should be fresh and interesting. I think I didn’t paste myself for my rough draft and was trying to get the essay done. I must learn to paste myself and take out time to get all my thoughts together to improve my essay. I will try to use some of the techniques from the class to have a successful...
