Trust In Macbeth And The Social Network

The play Macbeth and the film The Social Network (TSN) share many similarities, despite the fact that they are from two completely contrasting settings. One is a famous tragic play written by William Shakespeare, and another is the modern film about the creation of the popular social network in the 21st century, Facebook. Trust is a good trait to have in some situations, but it can also cause bad things to happen. Many characters in the movie and the play are affected by the trust that they have in others. Although Macbeth and The Social Network have different outcomes, but the idea of being trusting is demonstrated as a negative trait through both productions. People should be more cautious of whom to trust. In both the film and the play, …show more content…
But in Macbeth and The Social Network, it is viewed as a negative trait and there is nothing gained from having trust in others. In the play, as Macbeth’s desires gets bigger and stronger, he targets the next victim, his loyal friend Banquo. The witches say that Banquo’s son will become the next king, and Banquo wonders when this prophecy would happen “As the weird women promis’d, and I fear/ Thou play’dst most foully for’t”. (Act 3, Scene 1, 2-3) He begins to have suspicion in Macbeth, and he chooses to appear loyal but have no trust in Macbeth no more. Worrying that the prophecy would become true, Macbeth orders Banquo to be murdered. It is unfortunate since Banquo is a loyal and trusting friend; it takes him quite some time to realize that Macbeth is suspicious for his actions. And since he once had trust in Macbeth, he is blind to the danger of being betrayed and murdered. Another example can be found in TSN, where Mark Zuckerberg’s best friend Eduardo invested money into their new launched website: Thefacebook (Facebook). Everything goes smoothly for Mark and Eduardo until Mark decides to move to Palo Alto, to develop the company headquarters with Sean Parker, the co-founder of Napster, while Eduardo stays in New York to work. Eduardo thinks he still has an important role since he mainly invests and supports the company with large amount of money, and being Mark’s friend, …show more content…
The main characters from Macbeth and TSN have their ultimate downfall due to the obstacles that trust creates. In the play, Macbeth becomes the king and approaches the witches and the witches tell Macbeth no man born from a woman will ever defeat him. This put Macbeth at ease and he is confident no one in the world is able to destroy him. Macbeth trusts the witches because their first prophecies have become true, and he has no doubt of what the witches say. Even before the battle Macbeth is self-assured he is going to win the battle “The mind I sway by, and the heart I bear, /Shall never sag with doubt, nor shake with fear”. (Act 5, Scene 3, 9-10) Macbeth tells himself that his mind and courage will not be in doubt and in fear. This becomes Macbeth’s flaw since he believes in the witches’ useful information is accurate. The trust Macbeth has in the witches blindfolds him from judging with his own conscious mind. Him trusting what the witches say is believable becomes overconfident in himself and fearless of the battle. A similar example from TSN is where Mark Zuckerberg has a good amount of trust in Sean Parker, an entrepreneur who helps Mark to develop the new social network site. Trust should be earned and should be not given carelessly. Many would take advantage of the trust because of their greed. The relationship between Macbeth and Banquo; Macbeth and Duncan can be compared to Mark and Eduardo; Mark and the Winklevoss twins. These pairings reveal the negative effects of being too trusting leading to their ultimate downfall. However, Sean and Mark’s collaboration compared to Malcolm and Macduff shows a rare case in both stories of trust receiving a positive effect. The Social Network and Macbeth leans towards negative side to trust, however at times to trust others can be advantageous. The friendship between the characters of both “The Social Network” and Macbeth is ruined by the inconvenient trait of being too trusting and the end results in betrayal. There is a similarity between the relationship of Banquo and Macbeth, and the relationship of Mark and Eduardo. Starting with the characters from the Shakespearean literature, Banquo and Macbeth have fought together in the war and won. Banquo, who fought alongside with the outstanding warrior- Macbeth is like Eduardo, who have provided Mark with the algorithm to help him create Facemash.
