The court ruled that it was unconstitutional to remove an inmate right to marry who they choose (“Turner v. Safley 482 U.S. 78”, 1987).
The case of Turner v. Safley backs up a woman’s right to raise her child. If accommodations can be made that meet the four-prong test the woman should be allowed to be as active in the infant’s life as much as possible. The prison nursery program is the ideal way for the mother’s rights to be protected.

Position: It is important that parents be involved in their child’s life as much as possible. The prison nursery program makes this possible for mothers who give birth to their children while they are incarcerated. If a father is absent from their son’s life the child has a much higher chance of becoming a criminal themselves. Looking at young men who are incarcerated it is shocking to discover that eighty percent of them did not have a father involved in their lives (Purvis, 2013). It only makes sense that the father can raise his children when it is in the best interest of the child. Alternative Position:
Not everyone agrees with idea of prison nursery programs. Most people however do believe that the inmates and children do have a right to be a part of each other’s lives. All prisons across the United States offer visiting hours in which the inmates can visit with their children. The duration and frequency of these visits varies from prison to prison, and by the behavior of the inmates.
Not only does Bedford Hills offer the prison nursery program they also run a Parenting Center. This Center helps mother’s in general population build stronger relationships with their children that leave outside the prison walls.
