I try to improve the lives of students in my community through their education. I have been tutoring high school students in math and science for nearly three years now, and I believe that it makes a big difference in a student’s academic experience. Not only do I enjoy working with students who are eager to learn, but also the ones who need encouragement and motivation. When I tutor, I am able to help not only another person, but also reinforce the learning for myself. I tutor in many subjects that I once struggled with, so it’s easy for me to relate to the students and gives me the empathy to serve as an academic mentor.
At school, I am president of the Math and Science Academy, a free after-school tutoring program. I run tutoring sessions

...Ninomiya 1.0 Executive Summary 2.0 Situation Analysis At this present time, the tutoring industry is not showing any signs of slowing down as the number of students in school continue to grow. It is also important to point out that as the number of students increase, so does the concern of the parents that seek tutoring for their children. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the number of students who were attending public and private schools was at approximately 75.9 million as of the fall of 2010. The current trend is showing that the number of students attending school will continue to increase at a rate of approximately 6% per year through the year 2019 (Digest of Education Statistics 2010). According to an article that went over the best industries to start a business, the tutoring and exam preparation industry was rank seventh as it relates to the fastest-growing industries that are hospitable to small business. It was also indicated that the year-over-year growth rate of this industry was measured to be at 7% (Lagorio-Chafkin 2010). However, there is an opportunity that has not clearly been taken advantage of to its fullest potential within the tutoring industry. Are The Sats Fair

...Are the SATS fair? If not how could us students change this and make the test fair for everyone? Is the SAT test fair for all races, genders and socioeconomic statuses? This question interested me because we discussed part of it for our first paper. In our first paper we didn’t go to in depth about the SATS but they were a part of the paper. This interests me due to how serious colleges take the SATS. With the SATS some colleges won’t even look at your application. If there are tricks to this test that allows some students to score higher than others this wouldn’t be fair. Dartmouth College had a large amount of wealthy students even though they offered free tuition to the students whose families made $100,000 or less. “At Dartmouth, free...

Research Spotlight on Peer Tutoring

...Research Spotlight on Peer Tutoring NEA Reviews of the Research on Best Practices in Education Found In: teaching strategies 145 Peer tutoring is a term that’s been used to describe a wide array of tutoring arrangements, but most of the research on its success refers to students working in pairs to help one another learn material or practice an academic task. Peer tutoring works best when students of different ability levels work together (Kunsch, Jitendra, & Sood, 2007). During a peer tutoring assignment it is common for the teacher to have students switch roles partway through so that the tutor becomes the one being tutored. Since explaining a concept to another helps extend one’s own learning, this practice gives students the opportunity to understand better the material being studied. What does the research say about peer tutoring? In reviews of peer tutoring programs, researchers found: * When students participated in the role of reading tutor, improvements in reading achievement occurred * When tutors were explicitly trained in the tutoring process, they were far more effective and the students they were tutoring experienced significant gains in achievement * Most of the students benefited from peer tutoring in some way, but same-age tutors were as effective as cross-age tutors (Burnish, Fuchs & Fuchs, 2005; Topping, 2008)  Some benefits of peer tutoring for students include higher academic achievement, improved relationships with peers, improved personal...

...children; it will also explain how it affects students and how we can help them. Those who are unfamiliar with the disability will receive an introduction to dyslexia’s characteristics as well as a description of proven methods which have been most effective in helping dyslexic students achieve success. The goal of this analysis is to provide an overview of why a percentage of our children is having difficulties and determine what is interfering with their ability to learn to read and write. During my observance of these students, I noted that these children have dyslexia. I can now understand why so many frustrated parents of children with learning disabilities (LD) with dyslexia lobbied for the establishment of special classes in schools for children with dyslexia. [P]arents pushed for LD programs in schools for two main reasons: many did not see their failing children as mentally retarded and therefore refused to accept placement for them in classes for the mentally retarded, and schools did not provide services for children with severe reading or language difficulties unless they qualified for an existing special education category. …by the late 1950s, medical and psychological research, combined with parental pressure, led to the development of special school programs to meet the needs of a population of children that always had existed but only recently had been recognized. The ideological message in this interpretation is that schools, supported by medical and psychological...

Reading Program

...comprehension among students in today’s society is of high importance. The ability to be college ready in reading and writing categories is a need that many students struggle with at the college level. This paper will focus on an action plan to alleviate those needs and allow for students to be better prepared for future challenges in reading and writing that await them. This paper will address deficiencies, challenges, and strategies to improve the literacy program at Anywhere ISD in Anywhere, Texas. Reading Program Action Plan A reading program plan should be determined by meeting the needs of the students it plans to serve (Ediger, 2010). In determining an action plan for meeting the students of my school there are several key factors I have to evaluate. School funding issues are prevalent in every state in America and in order for this to be effective funding issues need to be established. For the sake of argument this reading program action plan is built on the assumption that funding is not an issue but student success is of more importance. This action plan will focus on 8th grade students at Anywhere ISD in Anywhere, Texas. Based upon data, two thirds of 8th graders read below grade level (Martello, Martello, Modder man, Peterson, & Pan, 2013). Gunning (2013) suggests ten principles in implementing a successful reading program for all students to be successful. In order for these principles to be effective proper monitoring of all students in the reading program...

Ada vs. Adm

...funds into a school can be quite a challenge, especially in a situation where there is only one funding source. Because the schools in the state are not allowed to levy local taxes, a plan will have to be created to ensure that appropriate actions are in place to make sure that there is an equalized distribution of funding. “Average Daily Attendance (ADA) counts are based on the numbers of children actually in attendance in a school or district each day. Average Daily Membership (ADM) measures the numbers of children enrolled to attend a specific district throughout the year” (retrieved from schoolfinance101.wordpress.com). For example, at a particular school in a district there is a population of 1,000 students with 90% attendance and the weighted pupil units per district is $5,000. When using ADM, the weighted pupil units will remain at $5,000. However, if ADA is being used, the actual WPU would be $4,500. This would be a $500 decrease. With the aforementioned definitions of ADA and ADM, I would choose to use Average Daily Membership when distributing funds. Because ADA uses attendance rates, schools with lower attendance rates would suffer. Research shows that “districts with high poverty concentration and high minority concentrations have lower attendance rates for reasons beyond control” (retrieved from schoolfinance101.wordpress.com). Unfortunately, Louisiana has several districts with both high poverty and high minority concentration. Though these students are not there...
