Although the title suggests an exclusive organization focused on violence, the novel describes the emasculation of man in today’s modern age of consumerism, societal associations and family structure along with the main and sub-characters’ exercising of power and submission to power as evident throughout the novel. Chuck Palahniuk’s values illustrate in the novel how humanity is being enslaved by the power of consumerism, brought to general awareness a new mental disorder, and how he portrayed the narrator having experienced or enacted numerous anarchistic efforts in the hopes of being freed from the confines of an industrialized and necessity-driven society. It should also be noted that several rebellious acts were performed by the fight club members and subsequently members of Project Mayhem in order to gain notoriety and power in response to being economically and socially subdued. They are a proud group because of their Gaelic roots; they look down upon the British-like lowlanders. The lowlands’ mild climate and grasslands are favorable for farming and ranching. There are several cities and industries which are advantageous for work; Lowlanders have a higher socioeconomic status. Indonesia is made up of over 17,000 islands, but only about 6,000 are inhabited; the majority of the population lives on one of five main islands. Like Scotland, there are more opportunities for income in urban areas. The socioeconomic status of citizens in rural districts and on remote islands is lower; rice and tobacco farming are their main means of support. Historically, a woman’s main role was to tend to the home isolated in the domestic “bubble” and to raise their children while their husbands were away at work. In this paper, I will describe the historical significance of this issue from 1865 to the present. I will explain the historical developments that presented new opportunities for women in society. I will discuss the main individuals that were involved in these struggles. To conclude, I will analyze ways in which it contributed to an “ending of isolation” while assessing the challenges involved. Even today, women still face discrimination based on their gender. However, the role of women has changed significantly which has created a lasting and ongoing increase of women's rights.
