...THE MOST EMBARRASING MOMENT OF MY LIFE It was an inter-regional Senior High School soccer competition, and my school being the zonal champion was to play with another school to determine the regional champion. It was 7am and already one could tell the day is going to be sunny, as the sun had already started showing its ugly face. By 8am my team members had assembled at the school assembly hall, dressed in the school navy blue and golden yellow track suite, I was called to address my team mates. Since I was the captain of the school team, I was filled with anxiety and overwhelming thought as I began to speak to them. Although I do not remember exactly what I said to them, I felt everyone was energized with a winning spirit. We all entered the bus, prayed and began to sing till we got to the El-wak sports stadium. The stadium was filled with students from the participating schools, spectator institutions and the enthusiastic public spectators. As I led my team out of the bus to the changing room, I could hear cheers and rowdy applause from the crowd; the feeling was great as I felt the need to put up my very best. ...Embracing Marathon Doing something you have never tried can be a very scary experience; however, with the accompaniment of your best friends, it seems to be accessible. One of the hardest challenges I’ve met was to enter Marathon in 2012. I made a hard decision to take part in this big match. Starr and Kiki, who understood me very well, decided to join me. We were not well-trained runners, with almost no experience of long-distance running. Everything appeared to be a dream; we did not imagine that we could overcome it. Jackie Robinson’s number on his jersey was 42, he wore that number his entire Major League career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The movie “42” is a biopic of the legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson, when in 1947 Jackie became the first African-American player to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier. The great directing, acting, and writing made this film enjoyable to watch. This well-made movie primarily tells the story of Jackie Robinson under the direction of his general manager Branch Rickey, while showing us Jackie’s battles with racism and a classic love story. “42” is a snapshot in the life of Jackie Robinson, which allows the movie to run at a nice pace. Visual and verbal teaching in short segments is a much more successful approach. Instructors and children feel a sense of accomplishment when many small tasks are completed successfully rather than partially completing a large, complicated task. Remember, some of us are still memory-challenged as adults and can’t even remember a grocery list without writing it down. Thank goodness for little sticky notes. Sports and activities with complex skills require quick assessment of a situation, rapid decision making, and mature levels of transitional skills. Examples of a few of these sports are the more advanced forms of soccer, basketball, hockey, volleyball, baseball, water polo, softball, lacrosse, and football. By all means, kids can be learning the basics of these sports at young ages, but do not expect high levels of performance in most kids in this age group because the development of their memory and complex thinking patterns is still limited. As usual, there are exceptions to every rule. I know some of them personally. If your child is one of those rare cases, celebrate the fact that he is ahead of schedule, let his talent age for a while like a good wine, and be careful not to feel the need for speed or to rush him quickly forward.
