The film Unbroken, directed and co-produced by Angelina Jolie, was a 137 minute movie based on Laura Hillenbrand’s biography of the life of Louis Zamperini, the epic plotline of which portrayed both the brutality of World War II and the resilience of the human spirit. In his early life, Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) is described as a difficult and troublesome child of Italian immigrants who emerges almost accidentally as track star despite his status as an underdog. Running was also a way to keep him out of trouble and build his strength. With training from his brother, he improves and competes in different running events in the Olympics. In the movie, Louis’ brother Pete tells him “A lifetime of glory is worth a moment of pain.” This did really happen in the book, but it was years before Louis left for the Olympics, as it was shown in the movie. This truly did help motivate him during his races and the many obstacles he faces in his life. Even some of the events that seemed manufactured by Hollywood turned out to be true. On the first day on the raft, one of the men really did spot a rescue plane, and were subsequently ignored. This seemed like it was inserted for dramatic purposes, but it was confirmed by the novel, and by Zamperini himself. Also true was the scene in which Mac ate 6 bars of chocolate, consuming the rations of the other two men. As for the unbelievable acts of bravery, these proved to be accurate as well. Zamperini did indeed fight off sharks and avoid bullets simultaneously. The atrocities at the war camp at Execution Island were maybe even underexaggerated, and “the Bird” even more insane than the actor portrayed him as.
