Yet schools are moving more towards uniforms throughout elementary through high schools. The debate over uniforms in public schools encompasses many larger issues than simply what children should wear to school. It touches on issues of school improvement, freedom of expression and gang violence. It's no wonder the debate rages on. Many schools are now requiring students to wear school uniforms. School board officials believe that uniforms are needed in public schools. School uniforms are not a negative thing to have. Yes, uniforms limit what the students have to choose to wear to school every day, but it doesn’t limit them from learning; the only reason they are in school. Student treat school as a fashion show, so eliminating that puts the students’ full focus on schoolwork. Although requiring students to wear school uniforms may violate their self-expression in some ways, a uniform are supposed to be looked upon as a positive thing, because they eliminate bullying, combine social classes and gives the school campus a professional look. Uniforms have been instituted throughout history for the purpose of instilling a sense of unity and membership among groups from girl scouts to the National Guard. School boards encouraged that enforcing a type of uniform for the students will help prevent violence, and improve school safety and academic discipline. Parents, however, ponder over how much of an impact dress policies have upon student learning. Opponents insist that there is no credible evidence that school uniforms improve school discipline or promote higher academic achievement. They sit at their desks, listen to their teachers, and do their school work. In some of these schools, however, they are also forced to dress in school uniforms. This restriction is really too much. In America’s high schools, students should not be forced to wear uniforms because they take away a student’s sense of individuality, they do not allow for self-expression, and they absolutely do not save families any money.
