GM
General Motors Company (NYSE: GM, TSX: GMM.U), commonly known as GM, formerly incorporated (until 2009) as General Motors Corporation, is an American multinationalautomotive corporation headquartered in Detroit, Michigan and the world's largest automaker, by vehicle unit sales, in 2011.[3]
GM employs 202,000 people[1] and does business in some 157 countries. General Motors produces cars and trucks in 31 countries, and sells and services these vehicles through the following divisions/brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden, as well as two joint ventures in China. GM's OnStar subsidiary provides vehicle safety, security and information services.
Legal issues
Does a collective bargaining agreement have the full force and effect of law?
Yes. An agreement signed by the designee of the university and ratified by the membership of the union would have the full force and effect of the law. Such an agreement is recognized under existing law and is enforceable in the courts. A contract cannot supersede the law, and if any provision is held to violate the law, that provision is subject to renegotiation.
The current recession has forced many workers and unions to take reductions to avoid GM and other companies from outsourcing their production. In signing a new contract with the UAW to hire the 12,000 new jobs within the United States, GM may find themselves in a possible legal issue if the economy keeps going downhill and Ford may have to reduce its workforce. Although Ford has curtailed their risk for possible strikes by the union, there is still a major risk in approving big investments in both employment and operations within the United States
Laws involved
The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA, the "Wagner Act") gives private sector workers the right to choose whether they wish to be represented by a union and establishes the National

...Unions first appeared in the eighteenth century around the time of the industrial revolution. This brought upon many jobs for new workers and soon they would need representation. The nineteenth century was the booming period for unions since the National Labor Union in the year 1866. Unions at this particular time were not exclusive to a specific type of worker. Labor unions are broken up into two main types: craft unions and industrial unions. Craft unions focus on workers within a specific occupation. On the other hand Industrial unions seem to be centered on workers in a certain industry, without a concern of a specific occupation. Craft unions derived from guilds of medieval Europe. They typically were blacksmith’s or bakers. Apprentices picked up their knowledge of the trade from masters. Industrial unions tend to take a different direction than craft unions. These type of unions are geared towards industrial sectors, which usually include transportation or food services. The International Brotherhood of Teamster’s just happens to be the largest industrial union in the United States of America. The first industrial union job was perceived to be long hauling. Unions struggle not only with race, but also gender. Labor and labor organizations were typically viewed as a masculine work environment since it required physical labor. The unity of the AFL and the CIO in 1955 brought upon a more masculine image involving two muscular arms shaking hands. World War II allowed women...

Essay On My Writing Reflection

...The peer reviews have been instrumental at exposing the flaws in my writing. The critiques that I’ve received consisted of not clear enough of a thesis, either too much or too less details in my body paragraphs, and a conclusion that fails to summarised the paper with the thesis included or at least addressed. Connecting my body paragraphs to the thesis has been very difficult to do. This is due to the distraction that I usually succumb to when writing long page essays, but peer reviews help me in this area as well. The presentations that we’ve done in class were by in large helpful. It has helped me getting used to being in front of a group of people without being nervous. This is a strong skill to have that will be used to in the future. Strong communication skills will eventually come to use in the...

...moves on. If I want attention for an hour or so, however, I'll tell them my horrible secret — for several years I made much of my freelance income writing term papers. I always wanted to be writer, but was told from an early age that such a dream was futile. After all, nobody ever puts a classified ad in the paper that reads “Writers Wanted.” Then, in the Village Voice, I saw just such an ad. Writers wanted, to write short pieces on business, economics, and literature. It was from a term paper mill, and they ran the ad at the beginning of each semester. Writing model term papers is above-board and perfectly legal. Thanks to the First Amendment, it’s protected speech, right up there with neo-Nazi rallies, tobacco company press releases, and those "9/11 Was An Inside Job" bumper stickers. It's custom-made Cliff Notes. Virtually any subject, almost any length, all levels of education — indulgent parents even buy papers for children too young for credit cards of their own. You name it, I've done it. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the plurality of clients was business administration majors, but both elementary education majors and would-be social workers showed up aplenty. Even the assignments for what in my college days were the obvious gut courses crossed my desk. "Race in The Matrix" was a fashionable subject. The term paper biz is managed by brokers who take financial risks by accepting credit card payments and psychological risks by actually talking to the clients. Most of the...

Private Equity Investment

...Harvard Business School 9-297-005 Rev. October 18, 1996 D O Private Equity Investment in Russia: Alliance Cellulose Limited N In April, 1995, portfolio managers were reassessing the investment climate in Russia. Since the disintegration of Communism and the Soviet Union in 1991, western investors had been intrigued by the potentially huge returns that could be gained by participating in the restructuring of the Russian economy. Russia’s transformation to a market system, however, had been highlighted by missteps and disappointments. Foreign investors who had jumped into the market only eight months earlier were burned badly by a general market collapse in October. Furthermore, Russia’s political and economic future were uncertain. O Nevertheless, Russia possessed many attractive features that could reward those with the courage to invest at this early stage of market development. Russia’s natural resources accounted for significant portions of the world’s proven oil and gas, timber, coal, and minerals reserves. In addition, the privatization process, lack of internal capital, and country-specific risk resulted in valuations for Russian companies that seemed to be small fractions of their world peers. T Russia in 1995 was frequently compared to America’s “Wild West,” when the search for riches and general lawlessness combined to create very volatile conditions. While western money managers were drawn to Russia by tantalizing asset valuations...

...writing. In fact, the three universities that I have attended in the past have all required me to use the APA style of writing. As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. I actually had expected to do better, but I guess my grammar skills are not as good as I thought they were. In any event I feel very confident when it comes to spelling, as I have always been a great speller. Even in grade school, I was a good speller. I learned at a very young age to challenge myself when it comes to spelling. Challenging my-self in that area really paid off as I became older, as I’ve never had a problem with spelling. However, I feel that I need more help with run on sentences and with thought patterns. Though I proof read my paper several times, it’s hard for me to see that I have several run on sentences until after I get my grade back. In general, I feel that my writing is just mediocre. However, I also believe that when it comes to writing, I am my own worst critic. Reason being, I am never...

How to Write a Good Academic Paper?

...How to Write a Good Academic Paper? That is a question which most students ask and most of them are new to academic writing. Academic writing if taken as a whole, then it would help you figure its significance and what is more important is, it would help you understand the purpose of it. Any good academic writer’s quality is his/her mind is loaded with creative set of ideas that help him navigate through the whole topic of academic paper. Ideas lead you to somewhere and only a few good students are gifted by nature and if you are not then you can also build up a good rhythm of academic writing. Secondly, you should also have a good sense of your audience; you should know what element of your academic writing would entice them and also create some space for your write-up for reading in their schedule. You then research for resources and data that would be of great use to enlighten your readers. Knowing what you audience wants, should be in your priority because readers enjoy what they seek in your writing. Usually what they look out for is something that could either bring them a smile or get them to think over the subject. Having creative ideas doesn’t guarantee a good and well-researched academic writing. You need to able to figure out ways of putting your research in a proper format so that readers don’t feel deviated from the focal point of your write-up.
