Understanding Child and Young Person Development.

3.1. Explain how to monitor children and young people’s development using different methods.
• Assessment Frameworks.
There are frameworks in place to asses a child’s development, especially their academic performance.

• Observation.
Observations can be made at any time to record what a child is doing. The observer can either participate or not.

• Standard measurements.
Standard measurements are used by many different professionals. They include reasoning tests, Cognitive Aptitude Tests, auditory assessments and health assessments.

Explain the reasons why children and young people’s development may not follow the expected pattern.

• Emotional.
If a child is not settled or emotionally attached it increases the chance of them being depressed and suffering from low self-esteem and not having he motivation to participate in new activities and learn new skills.

• Physical.
A child’s physical development may be affected by their genetics. This could mean their growth is slower than expected. It could also affect their development in other areas as well.

• Environmental.
Outcome 2.2 shows that there are a range of factors that can influence a child’s development. These include poverty, family structure and education.

• Cultural.
Culturally how a child is raised can vary enormously. This could affect a child’s development. Depending on the cultural customs independence and self-esteem is promoted and interdependence and strong connections are promoted in others.

• Social.
Social reasons that can affect a child’s development include poverty, broken homes and a family having a negative attitude towards activities and play that would promote development.
