Valid Research Resources
Students in higher education have a plethora of research resources available. These resources include traditional items and virtual or web-based items. Traditional items, such as printed textbooks and professional journals, are generally accepted by institutions of higher education as valid resources to obtain peer reviewed articles. Virtual items, such as search blogs and wikis are not widely accepted as valid resources to obtain research materials. Blogs and Wikis by design are virtual resources available to anyone for posting an opinion or information. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a Blog as ‘a Web site that contains online personal reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer’ (Blog) and a Wiki as ‘a Web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections’ (Wiki). The slow acceptance of virtual resources is mainly due to the lack of control of changes, contributions or corrections to these sites. A well known example of a Wiki is Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia, it began in January 2001, to allow collaboration on articles prior to entering the peer-review process (History Para 1). As of May 2014, Wikipedia is the world's sixth-most-popular website (Alexa Para 1) and is the largest general-knowledge encyclopedia online, with over 31.5 million articles, in 287 languages.(Stats Para 2.9) This paper will review the pros and cons of using Wikipedia as a valid resource for students and review resources available to Kaplan University students.
The argument for using Wikipedia as a valid resource
Wikipedia provides a good starting point to research a topic. It is a collaboration effort of many people contributing to the information instead of the writing of one person. Wikipedia builds a community of sharing knowledge since it is an open site accepting information from anyone. ‘It combines social networking with content offer opportunities for students to publish their findings, create historic maps, build digital portfolios and generate immediate feedback from a new kind if scholarly community. We should not simply evaluate these new networking communities. We should join them.” (Nix 2010 263) Articles on Wikipedia provide references to related printed works and include links to other web sites. These references are a good source to use for locating valid resources and additional detailed information about the topic in the article.
Wikipedia articles tend to have the same accuracy rate as printed materials. Every article contains a link to its history, referred to as the page history. The page history is similar to the revision history in printed documents. Information on the page history includes the ability to view previous versions, compare version, and identify the contributors or editors for a version. There is a classification system available for articles on Wikipedia. Articles with a Featured designation provide reliable information since these articles have been reviewed for accuracy, being complete, and following the Wikipedia style requirements. (Featured Para 1) “There is a tendency within academia to think that print encyclopedias are the gold standards of information quality against which the failings of faster or cheaper resources can be compared.” (Chandler, Gregory 2010, 2). To fix an error in a printed encyclopedia requires many months, sometimes years, to update, review, and print a new edition. To fix an error in Wikipedia, only the article requires updating and this can be accomplished quickly, in a few hours.
The argument against using Wikipedia as a valid resource
As mentioned earlier in this paper, encyclopedias are used as a resource to provide an overview of a topic or subject and Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia. Once the student understands the subject, further research is needed to provide details. Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, in a speech at a conference at the University of Pennsylvania remarked he has no sympathy for students who quote from Wikipedia, noting that he thinks to himself: “For God sake, you’re in college; don’t cite the encyclopedia”. Mr. Wales said that he gets email weekly from students who complain that Wikipedia has gotten them into academic hot water because they cited Wikipedia and the information turned out to be wrong. (Young 2006 Para 2).
Wikipedia content is provided by anyone. There is no requirement or expectation to be a specialist or a scholar in the topic being written about. Since the authors are not required to be leading authorities in their field, the information on Wikipedia tends not to be trusted. However, using Wikipedia as a resource to verify a date or event in history is acceptable.
As already mentioned, the error rate in Wikipedia content is equivalent to the error rate in printed encyclopedias. The difference is for printed materials, editors are responsible for accuracy, where as Wikipedia does not have full time editors and relies on the community to find and fix errors. It is possible for errors to be unidentified, which would make the information in an article unreliable or incorrect.
Eric Goldman, in a technology blog, stated “that Wikipedia inevitably will be overtaken by the gamers and the marketers to the point where it will lose all credibility”. He went on to say “eventually, marketers will build scripts to edit Wikipedia pages to insert links and conduct automated attacks on Wikipedia". “Over time, as the attacks become more determined and more automated, the Wikipedia community will become less enthusiastic about undoing the marketers’ changes”. (Goldman, Para 2-4). This opinion by Goldman has a basis as Wikipedia now requires a person to register before creating a new entry.
Wikipedia also suffers from vandalism. Vandalism on Wikipedia is when a person intentionally adds, deletes, or changes content to make the information incorrect. (Vandalism) With the sophistication of electronic fraud through the use of automated programs, it becomes easier for people with bad intentions to vandalize Wikipedia entries.
There are key problems with using Wikipedia in higher education. As reviewed in this paper, the tendency for students to accept Wikipedia content without question or further research is a key problem. Similarly, students should not quote from a printed encyclopedia (such as the Britannica Encyclopedia) as a primary resource. Until higher education institutions include teaching students how to effectively use Wikis as a research source, these resources need to remain as research starting points and not quoted sources. Wikipedia is a great resource to use for starting research on a historical event or a current event. Another key problem reviewed is the credibility of the entries in Wikipedia. Students need to validate the information is correct or accurate by consulting other primary sources. Using primary valid resources provides the student with the knowledge to determine if the Wikipedia content has been vandalized or if it is credible.
Kaplan University Resources
In addition to using Wikipedia, the Kaplan University Academic Support Center provides six support centers available to students. These centers are the Math Center, the Writing Center, the Science Center, the Technology Center, the Business Center and the Disability Services Center.
The Technology Center contains two categories. These categories are the Technology Tutor and the Techie Thursday Webinars. The Technology Tutor provides live tutoring 30 hours per week and email support. The Techie Thursday Webinars are weekly webinars on a variety of IT topics held on Thursdays; date, time, and topic of the next webinar are listed on the site.
The Writing Center contains many services to support students. The three services I will find useful as I pursue my graduate degree are First-Term Student Resources, Citation Guidelines, Paper Review and Q&A. First Term Student Resources will help me re-orient myself with the basic writing skills required in academic writing verses business writing. Paper Review and Q&A service is a peer review service that will be able to assess my writing and provide feedback to help me improve my writing. Citation Guidelines section will be an invaluable resource for me to ensure my papers are formatted correctly and follow the APA requirements. References
