16 - Sept. 2013 Ocular Technology

In this paper we will be discussing Ocular Technology with primary focus on the new Oculus Rift. The Oculus Rift is being developed as a three d virtual reality headset for gaming. This new technology is cutting edge because of its interfacing, head tracking at six degrees of freedom ultra low latency, new field of view range at one hundred ten degrees diagonal ninety degrees horizontal, a top resolution of twelve eighty by eight hundred, multiple device inputs, multiple operation platforms, and all the only weighing two tenths of a kilogram. This set of glasses could potently revolutionize the way we see and interact within our world. With this technology is currently mimicking our eye, head, hand movements and latency between our Nero brain receptors, all this means is that the possibilities are endless as to what this technology can offer us. One potentially lifesaving impact could be the incorporation of this device into the military arena. Wars happen and what if we could potentially save lives and unnecessary ricks with this device. This could be achieved by giving the solders a complete human sensory system virtual experience of simulated combat scenarios. What this could mean to our government is huge. We could lower training costs, lessen the possibility of training deaths, and allow our troops to have virtual combat experience that could save lives before entering into combat. The total benefits and impact of having this technology in our military would be irreplaceable. In addition to the military arenas, we could also see advancement in medical treatment and entertainment with this technology. Think of the possibilities of a quadriplegic being able to play a video game which takes ample dexterity and good eye hand coordination, or better yet interact as if there were no disability at all. The eye tracking feature of this technology is the key in this three d virtual world. Doctors could potentially perform surgical operations via this device where not available do to either location or disaster. I have no doubts that this product will evolve into something great that will impact the world as most new technology have. Seeing that this technology is a break through Google has started to develop and build off on this concept with the introduction of "Google Glass" however the biggest difference to these two are that Google Glass is voice responsive and Oculus is vision responsive. This goes to show that the implications of this very new technology is great. However as with all new technology it has its limitations, size, mobility, connectivity, cost, computing power and human acceptance all play a part of this technologies failure. We went from Charles Babbage in 1856 with the world's first programmable computer to a three d virtual reality headset, nothing is impossible! With all great technologies and the minds that engineer them this is one for the books and either way you slice it from my readings it's also here to stay. Reference
