There are many individual rights that people have in health and social care also, such as:
To be respected:
Respect is when we listen to other people’s point of views and opinions based on their life experience. We can show respect by being polite, thoughtful, caring, keeping them informed, meeting their needs and ensuring privacy and confidentiality. In a hospital the patient is staying over the night and is being looked after by the nurse consistently. She provides the patient with medication and active support by asking if the patient needs any help with the facilities, such as accompanying the patient to the lavatories, reception and entrance and this shows that she cares about her patient’s health. She also makes sure that the patient has the right to privacy and confidentially by asking and knocking before entering and by putting files of health problems that may be confidential to the patient in safe hands. The right to be respected should be provided at this health and social care setting because it shows that the care workers show consideration for the service users and that it allows them to feel that rights are being respected.
To be treated equally and not discriminated against:
To treat people how you would like to be treated even if they have different characteristics, such as their social class, gender, sexuality, age family structure, race, disability, religion, ethnicity and geographical location. Equality is ensuring individuals or a group of individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favourably and non-discrimination is fairness in treating individuals without prejudice. For example at a care home Jennifer is a colleague that has a different characteristics to all the other colleagues at her workplace. Jennifer is a transsexual, she is being treated differently as she is not allowed to use the staff toilet facilities and is using the disabled toilets instead. The colleagues at her workplace should take in consideration that Jennifer is a female and that she has the right to also use the staff toilet facilities regardless of their gender reassignment. The right to be treated equally and not discriminated against should be provided or put in place to make health and social care settings more diverse and reducing inequality and promoting equity.
To be allowed privacy:
Privacy is the right to be free from intrusion. This includes protecting personal information, protection of modesty and access to areas which provide complete privacy when it is required. It is important that the right to be allowed privacy is provided in health and social care settings so that service users feel independent at times and feel that they are being treated with dignity. For example, at a residential care home an elderly person may be getting dressed in their bedroom and the staff member should have the knowledge and understanding that they will have to ask or knock before entering. If the elderly person is not well the staff member may refer this to their doctor in order to help the person get better. If the service user is unable to use access or facilities by themselves, a care worker can ensure that they can still maintain their service user’s privacy whilst helping them. For example, a service user may want privacy when using the lavatory but may feel that they may need a helping hand so the care worker can stand outside the lavatory when needed or asked for help.
In conclusion there are many individual rights that care workers need to be aware of in a health and social care setting.
