P2 Describe the characteristics of nutrients and their benefits to the body.
Nutrients are made up of various chemical substances in the food that makes up someone’s diet, they are essential for life and a great number of nutrients in the diet is necessary for providing energy, building and maintaining body organs, and for various metabolic processes. People depend on nutrients in their diet because the human body is not able to produce many of these nutrients.
Nutrients are very important to the human diet but only if they meet these two characteristics, firstly, they must omit the nutrient from the diet leads to a nutritional deficiency and a decline in some aspect of health and if it is put back into the diet any symptoms of nutritional …show more content…
The main function of carbohydrates are they are the production and storage of energy; the energy they produce is used by the body tissues. They are also served as carbon skeletons that can be rearranged to form other molecules that are important for biological structures and functions. Carbohydrates are the main energy source for the human body, they are organic molecules in which carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen bond together (Cx(H2O)y) where X and Y are whole numbers that differ depending on the specific carbohydrate to which we are referring. Animals and humans both break down carbohydrates during the process of metabolism to release energy. For example, the chemical metabolism of the sugar glucose which is, C6H12O6 + 6 O2 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy. We obtain carbs by eating foods that are high in them for example, bread, rice and potatoes. It is important that we keep hydrated because water is involved in bodily functions such as metabolism which is the process that produces energy from food. If there is a lack of water, your metabolism will slow down and insufficient energy will be produced. Water is essential for cells to function properly, it plays a part in the breakdown of what we eat for example, all food groups of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. Water is important in the blood for transportation of nutrients to cells, it also helps to remove waste products through urine. Water has a large heat capacity which helps limit changes in body temperature in a warm or cold environment. For example, we begin to sweat when warm or show signs of Goosebumps when cold.
