Economic
The shipbuilding and repair services industry faces impacts from global economic development, changes in economic growth patterns and expectations of increasing and/or decreasing growth in the future (Kakatkar, 2009, pg9). The industry’s main driving force is economic growth because sea is the main source of exportation and importation of goods and services across countries and continents (Nam Sung et al., 2009, pg2). Global shipping freight rates rose in 2013 to their highest level in more than 18 months. The measure, known as the Baltic Dry Index, is seen as a key indicator of global economic growth. The index tracks how much it costs for ships to carry dry-bulk commodities such as iron ore and coal. In reference to shipbuilding being a cyclical industry, Bloomberg Businessweek says “When the global economy is booming and trade is healthy, shippers scramble to meet demand with more and bigger ships. But the time it takes to build them is just long enough, in many cases, for booms to end and global trade to sputter. As more and more new vessels come online, the glut exacerbates the collapse in shipping prices, the industry scales back, companies go out of business, and the process begins again…” (NPR.org, 2013).
An image of a feedback loop depicts how economic conditions influence the demand for ships. As can be seen from the loop, if the world economy improves, then the desired shipping capacity increases as there is more economic activity across the global such as exportation and importation leading to the desire for more ships for transportation purposes. When the desired shipping capacity increases, the gap between the current shipping capacity and the desired shipping capacity also increases which in turn leads to an increased order rate for building ships. Once the order rate goes up, shipbuilding increases which in turn reduces the order rate as more and more orders are completed. Completed orders also increase the current shipping capacity which in turn decreases the gap between desired and current shipping capacity (Nam Sung et al., 2009, pg2).

Fig1. Economic conditions and its influence on the shipbuilding industry
Albeit the shipbuilding industry having a big experience on how to overcome peaks and slumps of economy, the current global crisis hit the shipbuilding industry rather brutally. With such a deterioration, the world’s shipbuilding industry is certainly among the sectors worst affected by the financial and economic crisis. It can have the most painful impact on many ship building countries of the world due to the biggest overcapacity of shipyards ever seen and far greater supply of the fleet than required by the market (Mickeviciene, 2009, pg201). Due to the high level of economic activity in recent years, trade has also increased leading to greater demand for shipbuilding. In addition, the increase in demand for oil has also led to a rise in demand for ships to transport the oil. In the current economic conditions, the movement of business to low-cost areas where economic growth is increasing has also created greater demand for shipbuilding. Also, the fluctuations in the exchange rate in recent years led to higher profits for shipbuilders where the currency exchange rate went up. However, due to the present economic recession the demand for ships is lower than before (Nam Sung et al., 2009, pg6).

Technology
The shipbuilding industry relies heavily on the latest and most innovated technology to complete its job. If it weren’t for the existence of modern technology, ship building would be extremely labour intensive and time consuming. As confidence in technology grew, industry cultures began to soften toward new and better ways of employing technology for the purposes of increasing quality, shortening production cycles and lowering costs. (Anon, 2004, pg7)
However, the issue with technology is providing the right training, research and development to recruit a smart workforce that is able to utilise the available technology to the highest standards in order to easily adapt to innovation and changes instead of fighting it. It is theorised that the current aging workforce will be difficult to retrain and replace, there is a risk that the industry might lose an entire generation of skilled workforce experience in the next 15 years. The combination of recruiting quality skilled workers and replacing near pension workers to become accustomed to the newest and latest technology will be a major challenge for the ship building industry. (Anon, 2004, pg9)
The level of the technology is one of the most important factors influencing the cost competitiveness, especially for large enterprises. As technology simplifies the complex production process, it could reduce ship construction time and cost. Based on the casual loop diagram below, investment in process innovation and technology not only reduces the cost of production but also increases the product attractiveness. Technological innovation becomes the source of competitive advantage and helps them gain higher market share, revenue and profit (Nam Sung et al., 2009, pg15).

Competitive advantage is temporary and may not last forever unless ship builders work towards staying one step ahead of their competitors. This can be done through investment in the emerging technology which will in the long run yield greater revenues for the firms. Countries who are advanced in technology compete with countries who aren’t. They reap the rewards of producing a larger number of ships although their technological costs are very high. Countries who are not modernised with technology benefit from low cost labour costs (Nam Sung et al., 2009, pg18).

Around 3500 B.C.E the first of Mesopotamia's civilization, "Sumer" rose and had quite many contributions and advancements that would affect the modern world today. Mesopotamia had many first creations that we now use today such as wheeled vehicles, plows, potter's wheel, the mathematic system, and an advanced writing system. Another aspect of influence were the rulers of Mesopotamia and its governing system. Also how the social order was set up which contributed of how the modern day government handles situation. The last influence that I believe to be heavily pressured is Mesopotamia's religion, which is the oldest religion recorded. All in all, many of these contributions of Mesopotamia made the world of what it is today. Mesopotamia had a variety of inventions that were created such as, "wheeled vehicles". The earliest form of wheels were placed underneath heavy objects to get to places in a quicker way. This was the beginning of vehicles which we use today and are much more advanced. Clay, being the most abundant material during this time set off many creations of sculpture. Kelly 2 Sumer being the first culture to use art, were also capable of using pottery wheels. Il Divo Live in Barcelona

...IL Divo Live in Barcelona Charliena Diego Professor Nancy Barlar HUM 11- World Cultures 1 Dec 18, 2012 IL Divo Live in Barcelona I was not able to attend this concert in person, but I did watch it on youtube.com on December 18, 2012 at 12:46 pm on a Tuesday afternoon. I sat and watched it by myself in my family room, because my children and husband do not care for this kind of music as I do. The concert was with IL Divo, they are four men named David Miller, Sebastien Izambard, Carlos Marin, and Urs Buhler, and they are dressed in black suits when they come out on stage. The concert was live in Barcelona on April 3, 2009 and the performance was at the Palau Sant Jordi. IL Divo is surrounded by an operatic quartet that plays the music beautifully. My initial reaction about this concert/place is what a magnificent place the Palau Sant Jordi is, it was built in the year 1990 in Barcelona, Spain. I truly wish that I could go and see these four beautiful men sing their hearts out, I would be in awe over how big and beautiful these guy’s voices truly are and I bet in person it would be an amazing gift to hear. The song that IL Divo sang is one of my all time favorite songs from Simon & Garfunkel is/was Bridge over trouble waters. Un- break my Heart originally sung by Toni Braxton who sang it in 1993 and she sounded great when she sang it, but when IL Divo sang this song they blew my mind away with the way their voices are so rich and deep it’s like floating in chocolate...

What Is Theology?

...Introduction In this essay, I am going to explain one definition of theology together with a definition from a few great theologians. Everyone has their own thoughts on what theology means. We all do theology; we don’t learn it or find it in a book or on television or at Church on a Sunday. Theology is something we all can do. What is Theology? Some people would define theology as the study of God but they are wrong. God is a spiritual being who knows all about us, what we are doing and what we are thinking. In my opinion, it is very difficult to study something that you can’t see. The wind blows but you can’t see it but you can see the trees swaying and the sea crashing against the rocks. This is the action of the wind even though it is invisible. God is like this. Even though God cannot be seen, God is portrayed in the beauty of God’s creation. Theology means to talk about God. It comes from the Greek Theos meaning God and Logos meaning word or talk. It doesn’t just mean theologians talking about God or ministers and priests talking about God or God talking about God; it means that every individual can talk about God. Indirectly, everyone has their own experience of God. Everyone has an understanding about theology and their different experiences of God and may have something to offer within their communities. Doing one’s own theology is far better than learning it. Many questions are asked when talking about...

Story

...Hood Boy 3 September + October + November 2006 Jai Pain, was the first thing I felt. Then my throat. It hurt like hell and I felt like I was suffocating. Something was stuck in my throat and it hurt. I tried to scream but couldn?t. Around I heard loads of noise then. ?Call the doctor, she?s awake? then more commotion. I tried to move and my body wouldn?t let me. My stomach felt strange aswell. What was going on? I was talking to Marcus then he went away. I wanted him back. I needed him back. I don?t know how long later, but I was sitting up, with the help of loads of pillows, the tube gone from my throat and my throat still hurting. The doctors looked at me with some next looks. I wondered why they were looking at me like that. ?Can I see?? I tried to say but the words wouldn?t come out. ?You?ll find it hard to talk for a bit, take this? the nurse said and handed me a note book and pen. I scribbled furiously asking for water and Cubbz. The nurse took the sheet nodded and left. I don?t know how long but doctors and nurses kept going in and out, promising to make me see him as soon as they?d finished all their tests to check my brain and what not. What I really wanted to know was why my belly felt weird. Like something was growing in it. It felt so awkward. I knew I wasn?t pregnant because I couldn?t be? so what the hell? Maybe they?d put metal in my belly. The more I thought about it the more things made sense.  Maybe I damaged some organs and they had to be replaced...

Life Factors

...Life Factors (PIES) Life Factors (PIES) Cystic fibrosis Physical Effects A hereditary disorder affecting the exocrine glands. It causes the production of abnormally thick mucus, leading to the blockage of the intestines, and bronchi and often resulting in respiratory infection. Cystic fibrosis affects the pancreas because a buildup of thick, sticky mucus blocks the ducts reducing the amount of insulin produced and stopping digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines for digestion. This can cause malnutrition, leading to poor growth, physical weakness and delayed puberty. Symptoms usually start in early childhood and include: •persistent cough •recurring chest and lung infections •poor weight gain. An early sign is that an affected child’s sweat is unusually salty, which can be noticeable when you kiss your child. One in every ten babies born with cystic fibrosis develops a bowel obstruction called meconium ileus at birth or within the first few days of life. In these cases the meconium is so thick that it blocks the bowel instead of passing through. Babies with meconium ileus often need an urgent operation to relieve and bypass the blockage. Individuals with cystic fibrosis are prone to developing bone disease (thin, brittle bones) due to a lack of nutrition (which is lost through stools because of the damaged pancreas), and other complaints related to the disease. Adults with cystic fibrosis also have an increased risk of bone disease, which is a side effect...
