Use of Colour in Beloved

Within Beloved, colour is a recurring and significant theme, particularly the colour red. Perhaps this is because red can symbolise such a variety of things and throughout Beloved, the meaning of these objects varies. Beloved is full of strong feelings and emotions so the use of colour could represent these feelings. The colour of skin was a sensitive issue so the use of colour within the novel could represent the treatment that the characters would have had to deal with.

It would seem that overall, red symbolises life and the intuitive nature of human existence however in Beloved, life often goes with death and therefore red symbolises presence and absence. For example, the roses lining the way to the carnival, were already 'doomed' and 'dying'. This is significant as this outing could be the start of a new and better 'life' for Sethe, Denver and Paul D but these 'rotten roses' simply have a scent of 'death' and thus, perhaps not a new life for 'the three shadows'.

In a way, red could symbolise hope, but hope that leads to nothing but more death and misery. The red rooster signifies manhood to Paul D, but a manhood that he has been denied of. Denver's red velvet as another example is an image of a brighter future but it is unlikely that her future will be much better. For a reader, this use of colour, particularly with the idea of lost hope, is effective and can be quite moving.

Right from the beginning of the novel, colour is used to set the scene and show the mood. 124 Bluestone Road is described as ‘gray and white’ on the first page of the novel, which gives the impression of the overarching misery already. The family’s lack of money means that 124 has an absence of colour – ‘the full range of the dark and the muted that thrift the modesty allowed’. This links to how Baby Suggs feels.
She has had such a bad experience that she chooses to 'starve herself of color'. This lack of colour in her life is caused by the suffering throughout her life; the horror of slavery, the loss of loved ones and the way in which people do not want to associate themselves with the family because of the mysteries of 124. This could be seen as ironic as the whole novel is about the discrimination against colour.

Sethe is effected by colour, however this is in a different way to Baby Suggs. The first time she notices colour or the lack of colour is after Paul D arrives. To Sethe, ‘it is clear why Baby Suggs was so starved for color’ and realised how ‘little color there was in the house’. In a sense, she could be feeling the same way as Baby Suggs by this point – all of the negative events in her life have perhaps caught up with her because she realises that there is no colour both physically and mentally in her life. ‘The last colors she remembered was the pink chips in the headstone of her baby girl’, and although pink is a warm colour, it is not a warm memory for Sethe.

It is fair to say that colour is a very significant theme within Beloved. It represents many different things and shows the importance of skin colour and the effects that discrimination can have on individuals and a race as a whole.

Sonnet 130

...William Shakespeare explores many important themes in his sonnet sequence. The passage of time and its impact on relationships, as well as the portrayal of love and beauty, are major concerns in many individual sonnets. Shakespeare’s sonnets focus upon universal issues and concerns making them relevant today. The themes of time and beauty will be explored and analysed in Sonnet 19 and Sonnet 130. These sonnets explore the passage of time and its effects on his beloved; the majority of the sonnets (1-126) are addressed to an unknown young man, with whom the poet has an intense romantic relationship. The final sonnets (127-154) are addressed to a promiscuous and scheming woman known to modern readers as the “dark lady”. The ambiguity of the “beloved”, be it a male or female figure for maximum appeals, and the universal desire to preserve youth and beauty envied by the “older” speaker. Sonnet 19 focuses on the savagery and inevitable nature of time; it is presented as a force that never rests. Sonnet 130 is a more about the imperfections of his mistress and the impact of time and how it has affected her appearance but his relationship with her hasn’t changed. Both sonnets share a sense of hopeful optimism and defiance, and explore ways in which beauty isn’t about just looks and how time can almost be beaten or at the very least, accepted. SITUATIONS In the first quatrain of Sonnet 19 “Devouring Time” is introduced. It describes the devastating effects of time and that nothing...

...lifeless and not having any power. The phrase “doll to dress” also possesses a hard alliterative “D” which conveys the narrator’s anger at the mistreatment of women. To add to this, we also witness men having power over woman in the poem “Havisham”. Carol Ann Duffy takes on the persona of Charles Dickens’ famous character “Miss Havisham” who is a bitter character who is filled with anger and hatred towards her ex-fiance who jilted her at the altar. Miss Havisham is now old and still carries her deep cruisifieng memories which lead her to depression and imprisoning herself in her own home. “Beloved sweetheart basted.” This strong oxymoron suggests that Miss Havisham continues to dwell on the memories of her long lost man. This quote also highlights that her emotions are clearly in conflict with one another and will continue to do so throughout her life if she does not move on. The words “beloved” and “basted” are two completely different words which both carry their own meanings. The narrator has combined these two words together to show that she loves and hates him at the same time. We also witness more detrimental language and depression in the famous play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. “I have a feint cold fear that flows through my veins.” This quotation highlights Juliet’s loneliness and confusion at not being with...

Kliment Voroshilov Painting Analysis

...can see the ‘utopian gaze’ on Stalin’s face: the furrowed eyebrows and the narrowed eyes, staring into a point far outside the dimensions of the canvas. Another striking feature of this painting however, is the height of Stalin. He is depicted as the taller man due to his position of being closer to the viewer, when it was in fact known that Voroshilov was taller than him (Bowlt 46). This work by Gerasimov is perhaps one of the most famous works of socialist realism today. Gerasimov used a quite desaturated palette, with no striking colours, giving the painting a still and sedative feeling. There is a great sense of depth – in the foreground, we see Stalin and Voroshilov, then the surrounding walls of the Kremlin, and then the city of Moscow disappearing into the horizon where it blends with the sky. Compared to the paintings discussed further above, Gerasimov uses line to a much greater extent rather than for example shading or contrasting colours, thus giving his painting a more crisp and stiff feeling. These two out of many other techniques, the utopian gaze and the increased height, both seem to strengthen Stalin’s image as a wise leader in socialist realism paintings. If art has the power to mould our beliefs, a viewer of such paintings would get an image of Stalin as a wise leader – reinforcing that aspect of Stalin’s cult of personality. However, one should remember that the same effect could be achieved by photographs and posters. They are far more easier and quicker to...

Citical Essay on Havisham

...day of her life and will continue to do so until she dies. The poet has sink into the characters minds, expresses her thoughts and describes the gravity of the situation by adopting metaphorical setting to convey the juxtaposed theme of love and hate. Carol Ann Duffy has created sympathy for the character by adopting symbolic imagery and characterization to convey the deteriorating and pessimistic life Havisham portrays. Havisham aged single granny, seduced by the dark society and her unfaithful lover curses her life and the naivety as she submerges in her loneliness in her bedroom. The poet has conveyed a striking opening to the poem: “Beloved sweetheart bastard. Not a day since then I haven’t wished him dead” The poet has explored a metaphorical setting to an expose juxtaposed theme of love and hate by the use of oxymoron which illustrates that Havisham has deep feelings for her lover but extreme dislikes him now. Symbolic imagery is expressed by word choice which describes Havisham’s mood is to be harsh and cynical, this connotes a distressed angry character which wants revenge for her disloyal fiancé and wants him dead. Disturbed Characters

...in the texts I have studied. I will be referring to a range of poems by Carol Ann Duffy and Macbeth by Shakespeare. Carol Ann Duffy chooses to use emotive language in Havisham by using the words “beloved sweetheart bastard”. This is an oxymoron to show the contrast in her feelings and shows that they are very mixed. The poet is showing how she is both still in love with her husband however still angry at him for leaving her at the altar. Havisham is angry at being an old unmarried woman and uses the word “Spinster” as a sentence on its own at the start of the stanza emphasising Havishams own isolation. The short sentence shows how the word is almost spat out to show the speakers disgust with what she has been forced to become. This also shows us that she is a disturbed character since she is unclear about her own feelings but she feels them very violently. This is similar in the novel ‘Great Expectations’ by Dickens which also presents the character of Miss Havisham as disturbed by describing her dress as ‘faded and yellow’. This use of colour tells us that just like her wedding dress, Miss Havisham has become old. Dickens uses his narrator to show how he sees Havisham in his eyes. He describes her as a ‘skeleton in the ashes of a rich dress’ which shows how long she has stayed in her wedding dress. Both Salome and Lady Macbeth use enjambment to show the continuation of their thoughts. In Salome she says: “I knew I’d feel better For tea, dry toast, no butter,” Which implies...

Alexander Mcqueen

...Introduction Alexander McQueen (1969 – 2010) is well known as the Britain’s baddest bad-boy designer. “Nicey-nicey just doesn’t do for me”, Lee said. (Wilson and Horyn, 2010) He has been countering controversy as headlines hailed him since 1992, the year when he first burst into the fashion world. Even though Alexander McQueen was often misunderstood, he was successful in establishing his own fashion label that is now internationally acclaimed and desirable without compromising his approach towards fashion. From the start of his career Lee made his viewers with the feeling of awe or wonder or fear or terror with raw presentation of depicting bleak of history and anarchic politics. ”I want people to be afraid of the women I dress”, Lee said. (Bowles, 2010) “Many designers who reference history display a form of historical seamlessness in which the past is perfectly and nostalgically recreated in the present. With McQueen, however, the reference is not as comfortable; the suture lines of his much-discussed “surgical” tailoring techniques are still visible as uneasy grafts of history onto contemporary garments” stated Dr Jonathan Faiers who is the reader in fashion theory at Winchester School of Art. (Faiers , 2011) Background Information Le alexander McQueen was born in 1969 and was the youngest of six children; his father was a taxi driver and his mother a social history teacher. Unity

...good morning I bid to the panel of honourable judges, dedicated teachers, my fellow competitors last but not least beloved audience. Where there is unity there is always victory. Well, we all know about the story “Three Musketeers” which is a classic English novel written by Alexander Dumas. D’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis are always united facing the challenges in their lives. When Cardinal Richelieu's guards appear to arrest d'Artagnan and the three musketeers, the four men win the battle that follows even though they are outnumbered. The reason for their success was that they were united according to their famous motto “All for one and one for all.” This brings me to my topic today that is “1 MALAYSIA” which portrays national unity. 1Malaysia is an on-going programme designed by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak on 16 September 2010, calling for the cabinet, government agencies, and civil servants to more strongly emphasise ethnic harmony, national unity, and efficient governance. An official logo and slogan has been introduced along with the launch of the 1Malaysia concept. The official logo is the symbol of '1' which incorporates the national “Jalur Gemilang” flag and the word Malaysia. RM 38 million has been spent by the government to promote 1 Malaysia since 2010. Improving government efficiency is an important aspect of 1Malaysia.The use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) is an important part of the 1Malaysia effort...

We watched how their positions changed towards the end of the film so we would know which ones to proceed into our series. We had to take into consideration which characters stories were best to develop in our show, some characters were killed off and others were left without much explanation, these were the ones which we looked at in more detail. This is where we got the backing story of uncle ralphie from.. His character was left in jail without any family members apart from chris left. He knew that he was getting into a fight, but was trapped away so couldn't help him. After chris died in the ending of kick ass 2 we wondered how uncle ralphie would react. This is what made us focus on his character. We decided to make him the new villain in the series, this seemed like an obvious way to...
