Assess the Impact of the Mass Media and Globalisation on Popular Culture.

...Globalisation is the increasing interconnection and interaction of different cultures. The mass media has aided the process of globalisation through allowing its users access to a range of information, not so much restricted to just one society’s preferences, delivered via the internet, satellite television, advertising and other forms of entertainment (e.g. music icons). Curran and Seaton highlight the debate between optimistic globalisers/neophiliacs and cultural pessimists as to what effect this all has on popular culture; while optimistic globalisers see globalisation and the wide use of new media as a positive thing (creating a global popular culture in which once distinct cultural products and customs are becoming more alike), cultural pessimists see this as an illusion due to the ownership of the new media still being concentrated and belonging to large, powerful corporations, hence its content has led to a decline in the quality of popular culture. Neophiliacs see the convergence, compression and interactivity involved in the new media as allowing for an increase in consumer choice. For example; we can watch the same events on different TV channels to get a range of perspectives on them. They see elements of high culture as being integrated into popular culture to be produced for mass audiences, thereby further increasing consumer choice. Neophiliacs see the quality of media presented to the public as increasing with competition between media institutions, as well as...

Market Research

...A successful brand is the most valuable resource a company has. In fact, one authority speculates that brands are so valuable that companies will soon include a “statement of value” addendum to their balance sheets to include intangibles such as the value oftheir brands. Brands are used as external cues to taste, design, qualify, prestige, value and so forth. In other words, consumers associate the value of a product with the brand. For example, the value of Kodak, Sony, Coca-cola, Toyota and Marlboro is indisputable. One estimate of the value of Coca-cola, the world’s most valuable brand, places it at over $35 billion. How does a brand create value to the customer? Why do certain brands have more value than others? Naturally, companies with such strong brands strive to use those brands globally (extend them). The purpose of this paper is to review literature on the core associations ofbrands used to position brands as strategies to create competitive advantages. 1.1 Meaning of a brand and Its Importance A brand is a distinguishing name and/or symbol! intended to identity the goods or services of either one seller or a group of sellers, and to differentiate those goods or services from those of competitors (Aaker, 1991; Stanton, 1994, and Kotler, 1996). A brand thus signals to the customer the source ofthe product, and protects both the customer and the producer from competitors who would attempt to provide products that appear to be identical. Ancient history provides...

It is the process whereby consumers directly buy goods or services from a seller, without an intermediary service, over the internet. It is a way by which the retailer displays the array of products over a website so that the customer can view, analysis and order merchandise directly through interactive network or by telephone communication. The merchandise is then delivered to the customers address. The process is called Business-to-Consumer (B2C) online shopping. Marketers Seeking 50-Plus Consumers Nintendo is famous for its video games. DaimlerChrysler features a wide selection of car brands. Tabi is known for its classic women’s clothing. While seemingly unrelated, these brands have recently shared a similar strategy. As these established companies expanded beyond their current customer base, each brand attempted new marketing communication programs containing a more emotional message aimed at the 50-plus demographic. The 50-plus crowd not only is a sizable market, but also is a very lucrative one; they control 55 percent of all discretionary spending in Canada due to their relatively high net worth. And while the brands all looked toward the fifty-plus market, additional segmentation based on an understanding of consumer behaviour revealed subtle differences in their approach. For Nintendo, the saturated youth market proved to be a no-growth avenue. With industry sales hitting the billion-dollar level...
