Value Your Spoons

I came across an article the other day written by a fellow patient who suffers from thyroid disease, specifically Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The article intrigued me and I thought was just another story/rant about how difficult life can be living with this disease. I was about half way down the page when the tears began falling off of my cheeks. The article/story is called "The Spoon Theory" written by Christine Miserandino, describing just how chronic of a condition I just might have. And I'm only 18. Having do deal with the uncontrollable mood swings, lack of concentration, depression, brain fog, loss of energy, ect. as a high school athlete preparing to go to college, it has made me realized/appreciate those who are truly valuable in my life. Many of my family m embers do not understand my condition. I don't blame them. However, telling me that it's all in my head and that I "just need to relax" breaks my heart. I rather not explain to them how I feel in deep terms, but rather give a brief description of something they've felt in life such as a very bad flu. If that does not make them understand, that's when I utilize "The Spoon Theory." After having them go through the procedure of understanding how how much time and energy goes into every little thing they do, most apologize for their unsympathetic behavior displayed and ask me if there's anything that they can do to help. This remarkable article is a story that many people around the world must go through. Imagine if the world were taking their time enjoying the little things in life and helping out those that are in need. If we all have the patience to sit down and count our blessings, our perception of the world wouldn't be so bad after all.

Spanking Children

...discipline their children because spanking does not improve behavior, it may lead to abuse, and it also brings back bad memories. Firstly, parents should not use spanking to discipline their children because it does not improve the behavior of a child. Many a times we have heard parents say, ‘‘the more we spank the more he misbehaves.’’ Spanking makes a child’s behavior worse, not better. The child who feels right acts right. Spanking undermines the principle. A child who is hit feels wrong inside and this shows up in his behavior. The more he misbehaves, the more he gets spanked and the worse he feels. The cycle continues. We want the child to know that he did wrong, and to feel remorse, but to still believe that he is a person who has a value. One of the goals of disciplinary action is to stop the misbehavior immediately, and spanking may do that. But, it is more important to create a conviction within the child that he doesn’t want to repeat the misbehavior. One of the reasons for the ineffectiveness of spanking in creating inner discipline in children is that immediately after spanking, the child is so occupied with the perceived injustice that he forgets the reason for which he is spanked. Sitting down with him and talking after the spanking to be sure he’s aware of what he did can be done just as well (if not better)...

Glycemic Index for Sweetners

...Glycemic Index for Sweeteners The glycemic index for sweeteners is a function of three things: 1. The amount of carbohydrate present.  2. The type of carbohydrate present.  3. The presence of other substances (soluble fiber for example) that slow metabolism of carbohydrates.  Glucose has a glycemic index (GI) of 100 and fructose is 25. Sucrose (Ordinary sugar) which is made up of a combination of these two has a GI of 65. The search for a low GI natural sugar based sweetener is somewhat futile as they all contain combinations of the above, or similar sugars. Although fructose has a fairly low GI , it has other harmful effects and must be considered unsafe to take in large quantities. Agave Syrup has a low GI because it is mainly fructose. Agave has been delisted and banned by theGlycemic Research Institute of Washington DC because serious side effects were observed in clinical trials. Coconut Palm Sugar contains mainly sucrose and one would expect a GI of about 65. However it scores well in the glycemic index for sweeteners list. Tests have indicated a GI of only about 35. This may be partly because of other substances in it such as soluble fiber. However, the testing was very limited. More testing may well produce a higher GI. Yacon Syrup, scores best in the Glycemic Index for Sweeteners that are sugar based. It derives it's sweetness from Fructo-oligosaccharides, a type of sugar with a very low GI. It is probably the only truly raw, organic, natural, low calorie, and...

In the beginning of the movie, Katie mentioned a plastic spoon that the couple cared so much. She didn’t know when the spoon became just a spoon. We can tell that she cared so much about it not because of its physical value but the meaning and history behind it. The S.I theory tells us that the entire identity of a couple is based on meaning. And that’s what makes their relationship so distinct from others’. Every time when they see the spoon, it reminds their first anniversary, the sweet time when they shared food at the park. That is a symbolic meaning which distinct her family from others. 4. From the movie, the primary role of the wife is a responsible mom, and the primary role of the husband is a carefree dad.
