The way that one learns is not universal, not all people learn using the same techniques, there are those that learn by simply reading the directions; these people are read/write learners, or those that need to hear how to do something; the aural learners, those that need to have a hands on approach to learning; the kinesthetic learners, the ones who can simply just watch a video or person demonstrate how to do something; the visual learners. One does not always fall into a single category. The VARK questionnaire is a tool that can be used to let you know which style of learning you fall under. The writer recently completed the questionnaire and learned that not only one style of learning works best, that actually she learns best using the hands on approach or kinesthetic style followed by the aural approach.
Learning Styles
The VARK tool allows a person to answer a variety of questions and based on the answers that are provided one could find the style of learning that would benefit them the most in learning in a classroom setting, or learning a new task that would be needed for a profession. The learning styles are as follows:
Visual (V)
The visual learning preference uses items such as maps, diagrams, and charts. This style does not include the use of videos, PowerPoints or movies however. (Vark)
Some questions to ask yourself to see if you fall into this category of learning would be (Cherry) 1. Does visualizing information help you to remember it? 2. Do you have to see information in order to remember it? 3. Do you pay close attention to body language?
Aural/Auditory (A) The aural learner is one that can learn from lectures, tapes, group discussions, web chats, or tutorials. The
