The world needs to eat healthier, because it’s becoming a fat frenzied world. Can eating healthier solve the problem? Is there a diet that can help the pandemic the world is in with regards to health? Vegetarianism may just be the answer! What is vegetarianism? According to the Merriam Webster Online dictionary it is “the theory or practice of eating only plants. The vegetarian diet includes grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts; it excludes meat, poultry, and fish.” Such a theory sounds both healthful and helpful for the world we live in. Living a vegetarian lifestyle will not only reduce the risk of diseases but will also help to live a longer life.
There are many different kinds of vegetarians, the most popular being lacto vegetarian, lacto- ovo- vegetarian and vegans. Lacto vegetarians are acquainted with a diet that excludes meat, fish and poultry. This type of vegetarian would eat only fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts, proteins and dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cheese, etc. A lacto-ovo-vegetarian does not eat any kind of meat, or dairy products, however, they do eat eggs. A vegan refers to a person who does not consume any kind of meat or animal product or by product. This includes refraining from the consumption of eggs, dairy, fish and any kind of animal meat.
There are many disadvantages of living a vegetarian lifestyle. According to former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, almost 70% of Americans are dying from ailments associated with their diets. Replacing fatty meats with lighter plant proteins can have many positive health benefits and can help prevent certain harmful, life threatening diseases. For example, saturated fats and cholesterol, unwanted ingredients which are found in meat products, have been linked to breast and colon cancer. In 1847, the term vegetarian came about by the founders of the Vegetarian Society of Great Britain. (Dupler & Frey, 2005) As time goes, the diet is growing more popular along with different ways of describing each level of the diet. The most common way of describing vegetarians is by using simple terms. To be a Total Vegan means to not consume or use anything at all from the animal. Which includes no use leather, fur, cosmetics, and such. If the person chooses to consume eggs and dairy products, they are considered to be Lacto-ovo Vegans. (Regenstein, 2003) Lacto meaning dairy products and ovo stands for eggs. Therefore, if the vegetarian were to only consume dairy products, they would be considered a Lacto Vegan. If one loves life, why not try vegetarianism? Having a vegetarian diet not only saves animals, but also improves health and uses less of the planet’s diminishing resources. In 2010, each person in the US ate an average of 57.5 pounds of beef, 46.5 pounds of pork, and 82 pounds of chicken. Many strong followers of this diet claim it is unnecessary to take an animal’s life when vegetarian options are available (Vegetarianism 3). On average, there are 115 million pigs, 35 million cows, and 9 billion birds killed each year for food. Many food animals in the United States are not slaughtered humanely.
