Direct competitors of the company are Vera Bradley: Coach Inc, Michael Kors Holdings and Kate Spade & Company. The case says about Coach that "In 2013, says Coach operated 351 stores and 193 stores full price of factory outlets in North America and maintains more than 1,000 accounts department store wholesale. The company operated 191 stores in Japan and 218 stores in other Asian nations. Coach products were also available in 183 locations in other international markets. The coach also operates e-commerce websites in the United States, Canada, Japan, and China and had information websites in over 20 other countries. All these details make us see that this company is much larger than the Vera Bradley Company and this is normally a major threat. …show more content…
The company also has 231 stores (March 30) in North America and 73 international stores sales in Europe and Japan. This competitor is the first thing we see is operating stores in Europe so you can more easily show their brand. Yet we see how the company is bigger than Vera Bradley structurally. I would emphasize that the company sold in three major segments: retail, wholesale, and licensing. In previous companies (Vera Bradley and Coach) we see that retail is very important for total revenues but Michael Kors is only 48.7%. This is great news for the company because the company depends less on retail and therefore less risk as their incomes are distributed. Yet 48.7% is a figure which represents as the retail market is very important for the company. Even with 3 large segments where the company operates as it gets unless we see that Coach Net sales Net sales but more than that Vera Bradley. Christian Laux and Christian Leuz I n its pure form, fair-value accounting involves reporting assets and liabilities on the balance sheet at fair value and recognizing changes in fair value as gains and losses in the income statement. When market prices are used to determine fair value, fair-value accounting is also called mark-to-market accounting. Some critics argue that fair-value accounting exacerbated the severity of the 2008 financial crisis. The main allegations are that fair-value accounting contributes to excessive leverage in boom periods and leads to excessive write-downs in busts. The write-downs due to falling market prices deplete bank capital and set off a downward spiral, as banks are forced to sell assets at “fire sale” prices, which in turn can lead to contagion as prices from asset fire sales of one bank become relevant for other banks. These arguments are often taken at face value, but evidence on problems created by fair-value accounting is rarely provided. We discuss these arguments and examine descriptive and empirical evidence that sheds light on the role of fair-value accounting for U.S. banks in the crisis.
