In the commercial Inspire Her Mind by Verizon is an great example of how society looks at young girls. Through the commercial the little girl wants to either play in the mud, play with animals, make a solar system and use power tools. All of these activities are shut down by her parents. Her parent say, don't get mud on your dress and let your brother use the power tools. Since all of her activities involving science and math are not encouraged she starts to listen to her parents and stop exploring. When she is in Middle School she stops at a science fair poster. Instead of signing up she uses the window to put on lipgloss. Society does not make science or math ‘cool’ for girls to enjoy, so girls stop finding excitement in science and math. “ 66% of 4th grade girls say they like science and math. But only 18% of all college engineering major are female. Many girls are not encouraged to go forth and pursue a career in math or science. In an article, a teen girl in Indianapolis, Indiana said “I think some girls don’t want to do [STEM] because they don’t think it’s something girls should do. It’s a boy subject; they should stay far away from it.” This is most girls mindset is because they think that only guys can be in the STEM program. STEM is used in education to describe Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Girls Scouts is a program that is wanting to encourage young girl’s mind to explore science and math. Girl Scouts argues,“majority of girls who are not interested in STEM (79% vs. 60% of STEM girls) know more about other careers than they do about STEM.” This is an important statistic because if girls were exposed to what a career in science or math included and was that more girls would be interested in a STEM career. Lease, Norwich University Abstract This paper presents an analytical and comparative study of four recent corporate scandals involving organizations that had previously been recognized as both ethically and organizationally sound. Based on these case studies, the following issues are discussed: (1) The role of leader behavior and organizational/leadership styles in shaping the corporate organizational culture of an organization, and (2) The extent to which this culture renders the organization and its members (including the top executives) prone to ethical misbehavior. The four companies selected for this case analysis are: Enron Corporation, WorldCom, Inc., Tyco International, Ltd., and HealthSouth Corporation. Each case is considered individually. The basic elements in the scandal are outlined and the principal aspects of each organization’s corporate culture discussed, with special emphasis on the influence of leadership styles and leadership behavior/practices on organizational culture.
