Michael Jordan was a champion, the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. After winning his third championship with the Chicago Bulls there no was no doubt that Michael was the best. Jordan did something unheard of in today’s world of sports and decided to walk away. Too often superstars today milk as much fame and money out of their careers in professional sports. For Michael he knew there was more to life than just basketball. In the prime of his career Jordan was hit with the hardest news of his life. Jordan’s father had been shot and killed in a robbery along the border of Jordan’s home state, North Carolina. The news devastated the star. The close relationship between Michael and his father was something that was well known. Jordan decided the best way to honor his father would be to follow his father’s dream of seeing his son be a baseball player. A team, a sport, a nation all quivered as the idol of basketball was ready to throw away his talent to pick up a sport he hadn’t played since high school. Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, thought that Jordan deserved a chance to fulfill this dream. Reinsdorf offered Jordan the opportunity to stay in Chicago and become a member of the White Sox. When Jordan joined the Chicago White Sox there were many doubters far and wide. The baseball world felt that Jordan was spitting on it. The idea that someone could pick up a baseball bat and just start hitting came across as insulting to baseball enthusiasts. Sports Illustrated came out saying the “experiment” would never work. This athlete who was now over 30 years of age could never make the transition. Although there was doubt from many, droves of fans still flocked to see Jordan in a baseball uniform. The first attempts came at the Chicago White Sox spring training. Jordan worked to keep up with the other players, but constantly

...needed a way to revitalize and reinvent themselves in order to appeal to another segment of the market. At the same time, rookie player Michael Jordan was already endorsing several products, but Nike hoped that his appeal would generate sales. Jordan, though, had other ideas. He had always preferred Adidas or the Converse shoes endorsed by North Carolina Coach, Dean Smith, and hoped to sign on with either company. Converse, with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson on board as spokesmen, were not interested in offering a better deal than Nike, and Adidas wasn't interested at all at the time; perhaps due to Kathe Dassler's death the same year. While Jordan, himself, did not initially see the significance of Nike's offer, his agent, David Falk, saw a golden opportunity in Nike's offer to create a new line of shoes called "Air Jordans." and urged him to give Nike a chance. Really Not That Interested.. At that time, there was not a tremendous impact from a shoe endorsement, and few companies were willing to risk so much of their marketing budget to bet on one athlete to promote their products. An athlete as paid for wearing the products but little else resulted from an endorsement. It's possible that Jordan's reluctant attitude stemmed from this fact as much as his allegiance to Converse and Adidas products. Nike saw something special in Michael Jordan, though. They saw a chance, an opportunity. He was a champion with personality, charisma, and heart, and they were willing to put the company...

...1%. The current time is July 2001 and just a year prior, there was an analyst meeting at Nike to review fiscal year 2001 performance. During this meeting, Nike revealed a plan for revitalizing the company. The company was in need of a kick start as sales were stuck at $9 billion and there was a drop in net income from $800 million to $580 million. To re-energize sales, Nike was going to produce more mid-priced athletic shoes, an area where Nike was weak in previous years. Nike also announced that it was going to push its apparel line which has been growing extremely well. With this new information, Kimi Ford is now considering purchasing Nike shares for the NorthPoint Large-Cap Fund. She reviewed numerous analysts’ reports but felt that there was no clear guidance on whether or not to buy the stock. To make a better decision, she decided to perform her own analysis. In this case, we will provide Kimi Ford with a recommendation on whether or not she should buy the stock. ABOUT NIKE In 1964, Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman started Nike while working on an MBA project at Stanford. They originally called the company Blue Ribbon Sports and only sold running shoes. There first “office” was located in the back of Knight’s car. It was salesman Jeff Johnson’s dream about Nike the Greek Goddess of victory that...

2014 Hull Fc Season Review

...2014 for the ‘Black & Whites’ has been a familiar tale of frustration, disappointment and ultimately deflation. Rather than anger from the fans, there was more of a sense of "Ah well, same old same old" around the KC. A squad capable of bringing silverware back to the west of the city, possibly deceived as the strongest group since the 2005 Challenge Cup Winners, failed to find the dreaded C word throughout- CONSISTENCY. Adam Pearson knew it was a gamble placing an untried assistant coach in Lee Radford, at the helm of such a well supported club, but it’s impossible to say if AP’s master plan has paid off just a season in. As with Peter Gentle, it’ll be the second season that Radders can hopefully prove his worth. With preparations already underway for next season, hope springs eternal. Not only is Radford stronger and wiser for the ups and downs of this year, but so too are his youthful squad. Finishing outside the play-offs will most definitely not be an option in 2015 given so much more is at stake. Onwards and upwards you might be forgiven to say… It’s fair to say worry set into the minds of the fans even in pre-season. An away draw at partner club Doncaster was followed by defeat at Bradford and a 54-6 demolishing at Featherstone in Richard ‘Superman’ Whiting’s testimonial match. Despite this, Hull FC claimed the season’s early bragging rights winning the pre-season ‘friendly’ derby. Inconsistent results even in January set the tone for the rest of the year, with the palms...

...now. This has been especially beneficial to the U.S. in terms of making allies and also aiding those countries in need. U.S. has been a backup country for many third world countries that look forward to receiving assistance from the United States in emergency situations. There is significance in both the international incidents that occurred which I have selected to discuss. In both cases the United States worked as the policeman or world superpower. They aided Jordan and Turkey from Syria in the situation when Syria was a threat to them. They not only aided with help of troops but also an operation plan to assist them incase of an unplanned event (Gordon, 2012). America is also helping with ensuring the military is ready for both countries for any military needs. Determine two to three (2-3) international events from the past five years that can be traced back to a foreign policy created after the Civil War. One international event that occurred in late 2012 was in Jordan. There were 150 U.S. troops deployed to Jordan to help it contain the Syrian Civil War within Syria's borders. There was fear of Syria losing control of its chemical weapons. The task force, which has been led by a senior American officer, is based at a Jordanian military training center north of Amman (Gordon, 2012). Many Syrian refugees have crossed into the military training center and are using the resources provided by Jordon. Recent skirmishes have broken out between the Syrian military and Jordanians...

Nike - Chanel Conflict

...NIKE products to be sold by a pure internet company for the first time, and had grown from twelve to 150 employees. But nike.com faced countless critical decisions in the coming months. Specifically, nike.com needed to plan not only its own direct-to-consumer sales strategy, but also its policies and rules for on-line sales of NIKE products by other vendors. COMPANY HISTORY, STRATEGY AND STRUCTURE BRS, the company that would evolve into NIKE, was founded in 1964 by Phil Knight. The purpose of the company was to make high-performance athletic shoes for the U.S. market. Knight, a Stanford MBA and middle distance runner at the University of Oregon, recognized an unmet need for quality athletic footwear that could be filled inexpensively with well-made Japanese imports. Knight started selling these imported shoes directly to runners at track meets in his spare time and NIKE was born. Over the following 35 years, NIKE grew from a part-time job for Phil Knight into the world’s dominant athletic footwear and apparel company by following a consistent and logical strategy: to capitalize on the importance of sports in people’s lives and to be identified with competition and victory in consumers' minds (the company is named for the Greek goddess of Victory). Located on a bucolic campus in Beaverton, Oregon, NIKE stood out as atypical for a large apparel company. The NIKE culture was famous for its internal collegiality and outward competitiveness, a tribute to founder Phil...

Syria

...------------------------------------------------- THIS HOUSE WOULD ARM THE SYRIAN REBELS (from idebate.org) Syria, a relatively small but pivotal Middle Eastern Country, has been on a downward spiral since March 2011 when there were peaceful street protests calling for the President, Bashar al Assad, to step down. Assad responded with force, firing on the protestors in Daara on 21st March, and within a week demonstrations and some clashes in six of the twelve provincial capitals. Quelling Daara with force was followed in late April with violent clashes in Homs which in turn escalated nationwide on April 22 when more than 100 demonstrators were killed across the country.[1] Some among the protestors responded to force with force and formed the Free Syrian Army at the end of July whose organisation was enhanced by defections from the Syrian army.[2] Peace attempts have failed[3] and the country is now involved in a full scale civil war between rebel groups, that want to overthrow the government as inspired by the other Arab spring revolutions, and Assad's government. The civil war is compounded by the fault lines that run through Syria's history, the government is supported by a Shi'ite sect called the Alawites, that have historically been a persecuted minority but under Bashar's father, Hafez who was president from 1971 to 2000, they rose to prominence. Sunnis, the majority, want to return to political dominance, but these are not the only two groups, there are also Christians...

...Brown 1 Israel and the United States The relationship of Israel and the United States is very important throughout the entire world of international politics. The country of Israel has a very unique and controversial history, which helps put an emphasis on their relationship to the world and the United States in particular. The relationship with Israel designates the foreign policy of the United States in regards to the rest of the Middle East. This thereby impacts foreign policy throughout the world. “The centerpiece of U.S. Middle East policy has been its relationship with Israel. The combination of unwavering U.S. support for Israel and the related effort to spread democracy throughout the region has inflamed Arab and Islamic opinion and jeopardized U.S. security.” (Mearsheimer and Walt, 1) The United States did not take an overly "sympathetic" position on the Zionist movement until the second decade of the 1900s. One main reason for their new support was the establishment in 1914 of the Provisional Executive Committee for General Zionist Affairs. On September 21, 1922, the United States Congress passed the Lodge-Fish resolution, which lent the support of the United States for Zionists to establish a homeland in Palestine. In May of 1942 at the Biltimore Conference, the Zionists made the declaration that Palestine needed to be recognized as a "Jewish Commonwealth." (Oren, 442) The end of the Second World War brought about two changes in the Middle East. The first of these...

...the bible they must know the history and chain of events surrounding the major areas of the bible and prominent figures. Do you not know that the history of the Old Testament is found primarily in the first 17 books Genesis-Esther, of our English Bibles? Genesis 1-11 more or less serves as the introduction to the whole Bible. Themes developed throughout the rest of scripture begin here. The Old Testament serves as a schoolmaster into the New and therefore requires extensive hours of study and comprehension to grasp what was happening under the law during Old Testament time. It cannot be studied without considering the influence of worldly events. Combined, the Old Testament and secular history merge to form a tapestry revealing God’s plan for humanity. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief history of the Second Temple Period beginning with the Persian Period and Israel’s return from exile and end with the destruction of the Second Temple in AD 70. ...Michael Jackson English Michael Joseph Jackson[1][2] (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter, dancer, businessman and philanthropist. Often referred to by the honorific nickname "King of Pop", or by his initials MJ,[3] Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by Guinness World Records. His contributions to music, dance, and fashion, along with his publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. The eighth child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene along with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1964, and began his solo career in 1971. In the early 1980s, Jackson became the dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of "Beat It," "Billie Jean," and "Thriller," were credited with breaking down racial barriers and transforming the medium into an art form and promotional tool. The popularity of these videos helped to bring the then relatively new television channel MTV to fame. With videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream" he continued to innovate the medium throughout the 1990s, as well as forging a reputation as a touring solo artist. Through stage and video performances, Jackson popularized a number of complicated dance techniques, such as the robot, and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. Nike saw a `pyramid of influence’’ – it saw that product and brand choices are influenced by the preferences and behavior of a small percentage of top athletes. Using professional athletes in its advertising campaigns was both efficient and effective for Nike. In 1985, Nike signed up then-rookie guard Michael Jordan as a spokesperson. Jordan was still an up-and-comer, but he personified superior performance. Nike’s bet paid off: The Air Jordan line of basketball shoes flew off the shelves, with revenues of over $100 million in the first year alone. Jordan also helped build the psychological image of the Nike brand. Phil Knight said. ``Sports are at the heart of American culture, so a lot of emotion already exists around it. Emotions are always hard to explain, but there’s something inspirational about watching athletes push the limits of performance. You can’t explain much in 60 seconds, but when you show Michael Jordan, you don’t have to.’’ In 1988, Nike aired its first ads in the ``Just Do It’’ ad...
