Vidding
Vidding has been used for many years not. Vidding is when somebody takes clips of footage from visual sources such as television shows, music videos, movies, or even video games and uses it to create another video. There is a lot of controversy when it comes to vidding. According to copyright laws, the clips of footage being used belong to the original artist(s) and owners from those television shows, music videos, and movies. Those that feel vidding isn’t breaking any copyright laws say that they are just using small clips with no intentions of making money or selling the final video in which the clips are in. White there is a thin line; I believe that creating videos and uploading them to the internet using vidding is not an ethical expression of free speech. Vidding is a violation of copyright laws because an artist’s property is being taken without permission, whether you take one second of footage, or one hour, it is still an infringement.
It seems asinine that people would need such an explanation of copyright and fair use laws, but the law isn’t black and white. The law seems unclear on what is infringement or what is fair use, each case is different and there is no set amount of work that can be taken before it turns into infringement Fair use. (2012, June.) There are some that believe that if you just give credit and cite the original artist or owner, you aren’t committing a crime. Television shows and movies have used a trick in the past that lets the branding of a product lead the viewer to what the product is. If a movie character is using a laptop that is white with a lighted fruit on the lid, you immediately lean towards Apple products without the movie or television show to have to gain permission, and probably pay to use their products.
