Technology is one of the major assets in today’s world. Some human being living in this world surely uses technology in their everyday living. Nowadays, technology does have many uses and advantages yet one cannot deny, it also has some disadvantages and one of this is video game addiction. Cause and effects of the video game addiction recommends some solutions” Video Game Addiction is excessive or compulsive use of computer or video games that interferes with our daily life. Instances have been reported in which users play compulsively, isolating themselves from other forms of social contacts and focusing almost entirely in-game achievements rather than broader life events and “Studies have indicated that males play video games more frequently than females. Television program producers and video game manufacturers may produce violent shows and games for this audience. This demand for violence may not arise because of an innate male desire to witness violence, but because males are looking for strong role models, which they find in these shows and games” (Clark, 1993) Playing video games has become almost as popular as watching television. The vast majority of school children play video games; they are part of the daily routine of 65% of American households. Video games account for 30% of the US toy market and the annual earnings from video games approaches nine billion dollars, which is more than the gross sales from box office tickets for movies. This amount is 10 times the amount spent on production of children’s educational television programming (Walsh, 1999). Despite the popularity of video games, parents and teachers alike question whether or not this activity has any educational value. Moreover, as the quality and realism of video games improve with advances in technology, it is likely that children's interest in video games is going to

...The world of video games have been around for years and are always evolving especially with the modern day technology. With the making of new systems and new games on different video game engines everyone wants the new generation of gaming. Even personal computers are one of the most used systems for gaming. Medical officials have slowly been investigating how big video games are becoming and how individuals playing these games are starting to show signs of serious addiction problems. The modern day video games can become very addicting that it can cause individuals to neglect their families, their health, and lose their jobs. In 2011 on a divorce online survey showed that 15 percent of the divorces were due to their spouses’ addiction to video games (Whatcott, 2011). The cause of divorce is the spouse whether it be male or female are not getting the attention they want from that individual. Video games have become more personal than they used to be back in the old Nintendo days. They have managed to make games more competitive which is a huge cause of video game addiction. Most research suggests that massively multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft and Call of Duty tend to be the two most addicting games (Conrad, 2012). ...Video game addiction An Assignment Submitted by ______ ITT Composition I (EN1320), _/_/_ Video game addiction Video game addictions is a rather new syndrome since the computer games are relatively young – the oldest being only slightly older than twenty years. Video game addiction is a dangerous phenomenon and is detrimental to the realization of reality by a human being. The official definition of the syndrome is the following: video game addiction is a severe compulsive use of either video or computer games. Indulging in using the games excessively may hinder one’s everyday life. Video game addiction may display itself in the following way: social isolation, excessive amounts of time spent on gaming, diminished imagination, irregular mood swings, too much focus on the in-game achievements, behavior, which is modeled by the rules and realities of any given game (Lindsey 2007). Video game addiction is not going anywhere, as it recently acquired enough infamy to make it worthy of inclusion into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, under the “Conditions for Further Study” heading. It was deemed worthy of inclusion by the American Psychiatric Association, due to enough evidence, as well as, the fact that video game overuse results have similar symptoms and effects as seen in other psychological addictions. It has been noted that video game addiction bears many similarities to impulse control disorder and compulsive gambling...

Video Game Addiction

...Nowaday, Video game addiction, often considered a form of computer addiction or internet addiction, has had more and more press over the years. Video games include computer games, console games, arcade machine games, and even cell phone, PDA, and advanced calculator games. Since the 1950s, gaming has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. People have recently become concerned about the long-term effects of video game playing, particularly on children. Some theorists focus on presumed built-in reward systems of the games to explain their potentially addictive nature. In reference to gamers such as one suicide in China, the head of one software association was quoted, "In the hypothetical world created by such games, they become confident and gain satisfaction, which they cannot get in the real world." Ferguson, Coulson and Barnett in a meta-analytic review of the research, concluded that the evidence suggests that video game addiction arises out of other mental health problems, rather than causing them. Thus it is unclear whether video game addiction should be considered a unique diagnosis. Researchers at the University of Rochester and Immersyve, Inc. (a Celebration, Florida, computer gaming Think-tank) investigated what motivates gamers to continue playing video games. According to lead investigator Richard Ryan, they believe that players play for more reasons than fun alone. Ryan, a motivational psychologist at Rochester, says that many video games satisfy basic psychological...

...What is an addiction? Addictions are a collection of thoughts, feelings and behavious that together present a syndrome that causes a person problems and is represented in a series of mental illness diaganoses. Addictions are characterised by an inability to stop or reduce a particular behaviour/substance, despite wanting to and despite the behaviour/substance resulting in negative consequences. They are associated with severe negative consequences for the addict and those close to them. There is currently a distinction in research between chemical based addictions (i.e. the use or abuse of a substance) and behavioural addictions, also called impulse control disorders, although their underying aspects are almost identical. Chemical addictions have been researched for longer and more is known about them. The abuse of substance(s) can disrupt an otherwise healthy life and cause severe physical damage and in many cases leads to an early death due to physical damage sustained from the substance. Non-chemical addictions, also called behavioural addictions such as pathological gambling often result in severe financial hardship, damage to long fostered social relationships, including family. and can involve criminal prosecutions, as can chemical addictions. Although I have used the term addiction in this website, its use is contentious in professional and academic communication as its meaning often differs across contexts and can be imprecise. Instead, terms such as 'pathological...

There are addictions to drugs, alcohol, food and multiple others that are too numerous to list. However, within this century we have seen the rise of video game addiction among the young, the old, male and female. Video game addiction is related to other underlying disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, other anxiety disorders, and impulse control disorders (Oggins, 2012). The American Medical Association has considered adding this addiction to their manual of mental disorders (Northrup, 2014). There have been several studies on the addiction to video gaming. These studies correlate the negative effects of excessive time spent playing video games with the associated risks that result from this behavior. Research shows that video gaming has become one of the new addictions of the 21st Century due to the loss of interpersonal social interaction, negative effects on job performance, and the debilitating effects on marriages or relationships. ...Foundation English 101 30 March 2010 Although video games seem innocent and that they cannot hurt anything, they in fact have many behavioral consequences. Many things that I have heard about video games have both scared me and helped me to control my video game use. A study that was done by Douglas Gentile of Iowa State University found that 8.5 percent of American youth ages eight to eighteen who play video games show multiple signs of behavioral addictions (Donna St George). These multiple signs that they used in the study ranged from irritability when play is scaled back to lying about the length of playing time. These young people are really affected by these video games and no one really does anything about them. These addictions aren’t only because of the people or their personality’s but can be linked to the way the video games are produced. I believe that the way that video games are produced have a huge effect on the people that play. The producers make the games in such a way that it entices the people to continue playing. They can get more points or receive more gratitude by the accomplishments that they have in the game. I have seen in my own gaming experiences that some games have the effect that you want to keep playing to gain more points or get farther or beat the game. The video game industry a long time ago didn’t have the same effect on people because the games weren’t as complex a long time ago. The games now a days are very complex and challenge people...
