Dress Code in Hong Kong

In general, Hong Kong is a relatively formal society. People tend to dress more for status than comfort. For this reason it is advisable to observe a more conservative business style or a smart casual style of dress while in Hong Kong.

Formal business dress for a man is considered a suit, dress shirt, tie and leather shoes.

Informal business dress for a man is a sports jacket, dress shirt, long pants and leather shoes.

For women business dress can be suits (skirt or pants), office dresses, blouses, tailored jackets with simple tops and pants or a skirt, and closed-toed shoes.

Smart casual for men can include a regular shirt, polo shirt (perhaps with a light sweater or sports jacket) and casual pants (khakis, Dockers, NOT jeans). For women it can include sweater sets, blouses and dress pants or skirts.

During site visits and meetings, please do NOT wear jeans, T-Shirts, shorts, sneakers / running shoes, or casual sandals. Also for women, please refrain from wearing very short skirts or see-through tops.

April in Hong Kong can be quite warm and humid. You may consider wearing natural fibers such as cotton, linen, tropical weight wool and silk, as these fabrics tend to let your skin breathe better. Despite being quite warm and summer like, Hong Kong people tend to favour darker coloured clothes – black and dark blue are very popular.

Please note that inside buildings, taxis, buses, the metro and classrooms, it will be COLD. Please take along a jacket, sweater, pashmina or something of the like to put on while you are INSIDE.
