Vocation of Being a Leader
The article is mainly a guide to business men and women on their vocation in discovering the good and living an integrated life on their service. It is said that there are obstacles on serving good, which includes corruption, greediness, and poor stewardship, among the others. However, it seems that the most significant point is leading a “divided” life, which is an imbalance between the faith and daily business. To help balance the demands of the business world, there are three stages which are interconnected to help give perspective on the ethical principles one should embody. One of the steps Is Seeing, which interprets that none of us can be entirely independent, and that we are interconnected to one another. The challenges and opportunities factor in both good and evil, including the signs of the times which impact businesses. The changes in our era have made us an individualistic person, one who thinks what is better for him and one who focuses on maximizing his wealth. I think it is time for us to really observe ourselves on what we have become and on thinking of how we can improve not only for ourselves, but also for the betterment of our society. The second one is Judging, which says that good business decisions are rooted at our principles and foundation. To become a good business leader, one of the few things we should focus on includes creating trust with our employees, producing genuine goods and services, and organising productive and meaningful work. In this context, we should not visualize ourselves as creating profits for our own satisfaction, but thinking also on the aspect of a vision as a business in a community of persons who strives for respect for human dignity. Lastly, Acting serves as a guide on how we, as leaders, can be an aspiration for others to pursue their vocation, which can

Applying the Lesson of History to Modern Police Leadership Training

...The Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas _________________ Applying the Lessons of History to Modern Police Leadership Training _________________ A Leadership White Paper Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Required for Graduation from the Leadership Command College _________________ By Kenneth W. Sidenblad Bee Cave Police Department Bee Cave, Texas Date Submitted (month year) ABSTRACT Law enforcement continues to move in the direction of a profession and away from being only a vocation. Police officers of today are better trained and educated than at any time in the past. This demands police leaders be up to the challenge to lead them. Law enforcement leaders must enhance their knowledge and incorporate training ideas in use by other professions. Applying lessons from academic subject material is an important part of leadership development in many professions, and should be emphasized in training future police leaders. This will enable law enforcement leaders to develop as leaders in a profession. One academic subject used in other professions to develop leaders is the study of history. History provides a wealth of material from which valuable insights and examples of leadership may be drawn from. Lessons drawn from history are used by other professions to enhance the quality of leadership within those professions. Leadership lessons from history should be incorporated into modern police leadership...

Final Ethics Paper

...Final Form Professional Ethics Statement Hanaa Juma Concordia University- Portland Abstract This ethical statement offers a scholarly and professional analysis of ethical matters that often confront professionals in the educational field. In addition to exploring the foundation of my ethical principles, this paper explores the interdependent relationships of the mind, body, and soul in shaping the whole ethical being and the influence of theories such as Utilitarianism upon my values. The ethics portrayed in my professional life as an educator have the power to impact my students and colleagues immensely. It is therefore imperative to implement a systematic, in-depth analysis of my ethical beliefs, thoughts, and conduct. The professional obligations of the educator require the educator to inspire students and guide them to possess the knowledge and skills necessary to discover “what is excellent and true” (Markie, 1994). This professional ethics statement affirms the role of the mind, body, soul, and community in ethics as well as the responsibility of educators to purposefully and consistently strive for portraying their ethical best in professional relationships and conduct. ...CONFERENCE COORDINATOR. The goal of these conferences is to glorify God, to foster community among Christian engineering educators, and to encourage and challenge each other in our work of kingdom building. Abraham Kuyper, one of the great thinkers within the Reformed tradition of Christianity, has said that there is not one square centimeter of the creation that is not claimed by Christ. As Christian engineering educators of whatever tradition, we seek to stake that claim in our discipline, exploring how our faith impacts our teaching, our profession, and the technological products we design. In this proceedings you will find seven papers that span several areas of interest: philosophical questions as well as practical matters, changing ABET requirements, and mission statements, to name a few. We hope you find these papers encouraging and enlighteningchallenging. May God be glorified...

Liberal Art in Business

...Abstract Liberal arts and business are programmes of study that are very relevant at the tertiary level as well as to industry. However in the past few decades, the two areas of knowledge have been facing varying fortunes. Interest and student enrollment for liberal arts education has declined sharply while on the other hand interest and enrollment for business education programmes has seen a tremendous increase. This literature review examines works of several scholars and academic authorities on issues relating to liberal arts and business. The paper recommends an interdisciplinary approach in promoting and enhancing the study of liberal arts and business at the tertiary level. In concluding, both liberal arts and business programs remain essential to academic and social development. Moreover an integrated liberal arts and business education certainly develops thoughtful, flexible and well informed leaders 1.0 Introduction The past few decades have witnessed a massive shift from the study of liberal arts toward more “practical” and job focused programs such as engineering, business and medicine. This significant change stems from the desire of students and industry for university programs that are more relevant to job and industry requirements. As reported by Delucchi (1997) “the curricular trend in higher education since about 1970 has been toward studies related to work… Enrollment concerns in recent years have compelled many liberal arts colleges to abandon or sharply...

...ISSN 1648-2603 ● VIEŠOJI POLITIKA IR ADMINISTRAVIMAS ● 2004. Nr. 13 Accountability and Responsibility in Organizations: the Ethics of Discretion Raymond W. Cox III University of Akron Akron, Ohio, USA The article presents a comprehensive approach to the administrative discretion. The objective of the paper has been to outline a perspective and patterns of behaviour, which are helpful defining "discretion in action". Theoretical discussion on the issue has been extended towards practical implications. Author stresses, that establishing a decision-making architecture, leaders of the organization can create learning and supportive environment, which encourages appropriate and limited use of discretion. Raktažodžiai: atskaitomybė, atsakomybė, diskretiškumas, etika, korupcija, sprendimų priėmimas. Keywords: accountability, responsibility, discretion, ethics, corruption, decision making. Introduction Few aspects of Public Administration engender more controversy than the idea of discretion. For most, the attitude toward the exercise of discretion must be described as ambiguous and even ambivalent. While the necessity of the exercise of discretion is not disputed, there is little agreement on the normative foundation (Bryner, 1987) for that activity. Yet without a normative foundation, there is little basis upon which to judge the exercise of discretion. Recent literature on ethical practices in the governments of Africa has boldly asserted that discretion leads to the breakdown...
