A Case Study of Vodafone

...CASE STUDY Vodafone: developing a total communications strategy in the UK market Roger A. Strang We will be the communications leader in an increasingly connected world. Vodafone website, 2009 In 2009, Vodafone, the world’s largest mobile telephone operator by revenue, was under increasing pressure to develop a strategy to ensure leadership in the rapidly growing market for high-speed internet services in its UK home market. The challenge for the company was that the development of new technologies for voice, data and video transmission was blurring the boundaries among traditional industries and forcing reconsideration of what was required for a strategy of ‘total communications. This growth in demand for new services had attracted the interest not only of Vodafone’s traditional competitors in the telephone industry, but also from other communications companies such as Virgin Media ((the largest cable operator in the UK) and Sky Broadcasting which was the UK’s largest provider of satellite-based television. Other new competitors included the largest UK retailer of mobile phones and services, Carphone Warehouse and suppliers such as Apple (iTunes) and Nokia (Ovi) which had been investing heavily in digital content. Google was also increasingly involved in the communications field with a new, open, mobile operating system, Android and investments in mobile search and advertising. In addition to changes in competition, Vodafone and other operators faced rapid changes...

2g Case Assessment

...Trai has never been consistent about how to price & allocate spectrum V RANGANATHAN, Former member, TRAI  On January 10, 2008, the DoT sold licences with 2G spectrum at 2001 prices, realising about Rs 10,000 crore, ostensibly on a firstcome-first-served basis, but actually violating even this.  There was a feeling that the government lost revenue, fortified by CAG that assigned a dramatic Rs 1.76 lakh crore number to it. Swan got the licence for Rs 1,347 crore, and sold 45% to Etisalat for Rs 4,200 crore, valuing the firm at around Rs 10,000 crore. These raised suspicions about corruption.  But there have been parallels. The UK government, when it sold 2G waves through 'beauty contests' or bureaucratic allotments based on subjective criteria, realised only £44,000, whereas its 3G auctions in 2001 realised a staggering £22.3 billion. But UK's polity did not bicker with the advantage of hindsight.  It was considered as part of evolution. In India too, 3G auctions were conducted, netting Rs 1 lakh crore for the government and there has been no controversy over that. When Centaur hotel was sold in auction by Arun Shourie, the buyer resold it subsequently at a huge profit.  Therefore, just the fact that there was no auction or that it got resold at a higher price may not be due to corruption, but inefficiency. To make a mistake is not criminal. Otherwise the executive can't function.  However, actions with the mala fide intention of gaining pecuniary advantage...

It's a technology anxiously awaited by telecom operations and subscribers in India. How long do you have to wait? Not very long! India is all set to launch 3G mobile telephone services by June 2007. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India chairman Nripendra Misra, a total of 32.5 MHz is available for allocation within the next 6-9 months. Trai has also recommended auctioning 200 MHz for broadband wireless access services like Wimax (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) and has proposed a national frequency management board to oversee spectrum availability and its efficient use. He hopes that the allocated spectrum would be enough for the next two years and said Trai would recommend freeing up more spectrum for those who lose out in this auction. So what is 3G spectrum all about? Read on. What is spectrum? Radio spectrum refers to a range of radio frequencies. The bandwidth of a radio signal is the difference between the upper and lower frequencies of the signal. For example, in the case of a voice signal having a minimum frequency of 200 hertz (Hz) and a maximum frequency of 3,000 Hz, the bandwidth is 2,800 Hz (3 KHz). The amount...
