• Cell Phones – Cell phones I would say uses both data and voice. You can use these devices to talk to other people via voice, and you can use it to access the internet via data services. Cell towers are essential for either of these functions to work.
• Landline Phones - Landline phones originally were voice only. Created to carry audio from human beings. With the invention of modems, and then to IDNS and now DSL, it is also used as data as well.
• SMS / Text Messaging – SMS / Text messaging uses Data services. These services allow you to send and receive blocks of characters (ie letters / numbers) between devices. There are no vocal communication done between these devices.
• Fax Machines – Fax Machines use data services. It takes a digital print of a document and turns them into packets of data to be sent to a receiving fax machine that then takes those packets of data and translates them into a printed document.
• Pagers – A pager is a device that uses data services. It would take an incoming call by its tone and transfer that data into a readable digital message. This way the receiving person can then use that message to call back a person at the given number on the device.
• VOIP (voice over IP) Phones – VOIP like Vonage uses Data services. One might think that voice services would be used seeing you are making a call, but it’s all done on a digital level. It takes your voice, transforms it into data that is then sent out and transformed back into voice at the receiving end. It bypasses the local phone companies and lets us use the internet to make calls.
• Skype / Facetime – Skype is a data service. It uses data to use the internet like VOIP to communicate but on a more elaborate platform. These applications not just use audio but also uses visual when
