The nonprofit sector is an often overlooked area of our economy. Because of this, work engagement and work performance studies are often focused on the for-profit sectors. According to the Council of Nonprofits, in 2012 the nonprofit sector is about 5.4 percent of the United States GDP contributing about $878 billion to the economy (2012). The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in 2015, 10.3 percent of all private sector employment or 11.4 million jobs were in the nonprofit sector (2014). The Corporation for National and Community Service showed in 2013 one in four adults engaged in some formal volunteering through an organization. This means in 2013, 62.6 million people volunteered 7.7 billion hours for an estimated value of …show more content…
Since flow has been positively associated with many individual and team success factors, this study aims to look at the correlation between flow and volunteerism. Because of the perceived social impact of volunteering I hypothesize perceived outcome importance will be higher in volunteer work than in professional work. Because of the perceived outcome importance relates to intrinsic motivation, and because of the positive association between active leisure, volunteering, and flow, I hypothesize that individuals will experience more flow in volunteer work than in professional work. Volunteers will be recruited via e-mail through the Tulsa Area United Way agency volunteer database. The Flow Short Scale will be used to measure flow experience and perceived outcome importance (Engeser & Rheinberg, 2008). All components of flow are included in items measured on a 7-point scale (see appendix). Perceived importance is measured using three questions: ‘‘Something important to me is at stake here’’, ‘‘I won’t make any mistakes here’’, and ‘‘I am worried about failing’’. A 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly disagree to 7 = Strongly agree) was used for the perceived importance measure. The Flow Short Scale will be given through Qualtrics, and participants will be asked to complete the survey in relation to their professional work and in relation to volunteer work. Demographic questions will include gender, age, education, type of professional work, and type of volunteer work. Type of work will be compared with measures of flow experience and perceived importance to determine association between the three.
