Ever since the Roe vs Wade case abortion, has become a highly controversial issue. With about a million babies dying every year through this practice, it has escalated into something unimaginable (Brown). This issue has many supporters and non-supporters ranging from women who’ve had the procedure, to the doctors that carry it out, to the protesters in front of the clinics demanding that the atrocities stop. So what exactly is abortion? According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary an abortion is the medical procedure used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of the fetus. The killing of an innocent human being is wrong and terrible. According to our own government unborn fetuses and considered human beings (Brown). The federal Unborn Victims Violence act was created to protect the helpless unborn children from assault or murder (Associated Press). The law states that you will “be punished” if you are caught trying to intentionally harm or kill a human being. So why are abortionists getting away with murder so many children? On January 22, 1973 the landscape of abortion was changed (Davis). The famous Roe v. Wade decided that because of “a guarantee of certain areas or zones of privacy” and the fact that “this right of privacy….is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy (Roe v. Wade).” So it is essentially saying that a woman can kill her child because of her right to privacy and having the government not get involved in her life. Another court case that helped shape abortion to what it is today is the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Judge Sandra Day stated during that case that “the ability of women to participate equally in the economics and social life of the Nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives (Rubin 72).” So essentially in order to be a women you should be able to control what happens to your body, and because we are allowed to decide if we can keep our babies then we should be ready to decide our own economics and social standings.
