On a windy and stormy night in the east of Ancient China, there was a small village. There was a tiny bamboo house built in the village and a boy and his family lived in it. The boy's name was Wang Li. He was treated like an unworthy slave by his ungrateful parents. His goal was to reach the top of the extremely difficult mountain which he sees everyday outside his window. That night he did the dirty dishes and then set on his hopeful journey.

While walking, he just remembered that he had forgotten to stock up on supplies for his journey. He was too busy thinking about his journey before stocking up. During his journey to the top of the mountain, he started to trample on smudged snow and began to get a winter's chill. Then came up little

...Leonard Bilal Blacklock AC0325687 World Civilizations I (HS150) Lesson 6 Assignment 6 03/04/2015 Sui Dynasty (589 – 618 CE) was a short lived Imperial Chinese dynasty, preceded by the Southern and Northern Dynasties. It unified China for the first time after nearly four centuries of north-south division. It was followed by the Tang Dynasty. Founded by Emperor Wen of Sui, the capital was Chang’an. His reign saw the reunification of Southern and Northern China and the construction of the Grand Canal, connecting the Yellow and Yangtze River for easy trading. The canal was used to carry rice and other agricultural products. Wendi was the first emperor to build a centralized government, created legal codes (social security); Buddhism was also spread and encouraged throughout the empire, uniting varied peoples and cultures of China.(Refer to pages 277; Wikipedia,2015). The Sui dynasty which reunified China after nearly four centuries of political fragmentation during which the north and south had developed in different ways, played a part far more important than its short span would suggest. In the same way that the Qin rulers of the 3rd century BC had unified China after the Zhanguo (Warring States) period, so the Sui brought China together again and set up many institutions that were to be adopted by their successors, the Tang. Like the Qin, however, the Sui overstrained their resources and fell. And also as in the case of the Qin, traditional history has judged the...

...its own American culture, there was a series of sharp culture conflicts between new and old, fashionable and traditional, western and eastern in old China. The Young Companion and TIME, two famous magazines, both had a significant impact on their target society. To discuss the impact on media and how it shapes a society, this essay is going to analyse the cover of both magazines. It is necessary to give a short introduction of TIME and The Young Companion before study. The Young Companion was a large comprehensive picture magazine in the period of Republic of China. It was established by Liande Wu in Shanghai, 1926. The propose of the publication was “popularize the education, develop the culture” (Liande Wu,1928), aiming to be the mentor of readers. TIME was established by Henry .R. Luce and Briton Haddon in March, 1923. Nowadays, it is published by Warner in New York, voicing opinions about the international issues and reporting the international event. In addition, the aim is to help the people who are busy understanding the big affairs in the world in general (Wang, 2009). According to Grossberg et al (2006:168), the text itself offers certain organizations and structures of meaning that can be identified. As a process of coordinate messages, layout is the final process of packing messages and author's subjective intention into a “code” (Grossberg et al, 2006:144). To identify the structure of the two magazines, deconstructing the...

Symbolism in “a Pair of Tickets”

...Symbolism in “A Pair of Tickets” The same way scratches on paper create language and just one look from an admirer creates a feeling of love in ones heart; symbolism can evoke emotion and meaning that generates magic in a story. I believe symbolism is a prevalent and unwavering theme weaved throughout Amy Tan’s short story “A Pair of Tickets.” Many things, such as the names of the characters, and the photographs they take in the story embody symbolism and turn this story into a remarkable account of family and how it is one of life’s unbreakable bonds. The importance of symbolism in this short story makes it come alive to the reader. To summarize of Amy Tans “A Pair of Tickets” we look at the main character, Jing-mei. She is on a train, with her father, heading to China to visit her family. She speaks of not feeling like she is really Chinese. Although all of her family is Chinese, she grew up in America because that is where her parents moved during the Japanese invasion of China. They first visit the town of Guangzhou, where her father’s great aunt is waiting to see them. This is the first time the reader gets a glimpse of Jing-mei being interested in her Chinese heritage. “The minute our train leaves the Hong Kong border and enters Shenzhen, China, I feel different. I can feel the skin on my forehead tingling, my blood rushing through a new course, my bones aching with a familiar old pain. And I think, my mother was right. I am becoming Chinese.” (Norton, 189.) They...

Jumping Spiders Paper by You-Hui Bao1 and Xian-Jin Peng2

...tw/zool/zoolstud/41.4/403.pdf Key words: Chinattus, Euophrys, Pancorius, Neon, Spartaeus. Jumping spiders of the family Salticidae are the most specious taxa in the Araneae, and cur- rently a total of 510 genera and more than 4600 species have been documented (Platnick 1998). However, the diversity of jumping spiders in Taiwan is poorly understood. Until very recently, only 18 species from 10 genera had been described, almost all of which were published in the 19th century (Chen 1996). Despite the fact that the diversity of jumping spiders is the highest globally among the Araneae fauna, the document- ed number of Taiwanese salticid species has remained static since the early 20th century. This situation was somewhat rectified when Peng and Li (2002) and Peng et al. (2002) reported 15 new or new-record species from 12 genera. However, considering Taiwan,s subtropical/tropical climate and extremely high level of...

Advertisement Detection

...LITERATURE REVIEW TV commercials have a great impact on our lives, and it is also seen that some people like commercials while some do not. It is also seen if one is watching an interesting movie or an interesting football or cricket match, there are some commercials broadcasted along, which causes disturbance while watching the movie or match. Few organizations develop advertisements on TV mostly give responsibility to other companies to check if the TV commercials are really broadcasted as per the contract. L. Agnihotri et al (2003). There are a few organizations that form advertisements and examine on the present advertised commercials and only keep the significant ones. For a user or a viewer he might want to record the movie or a particular program and would prefer a break free one i.e. without any advertisements. There have been set top boxes or software that detect and discard the commercials on the broadcast TV signal. Study in the field of the advertisement identification is segmented into various manners. It can be dependent on the audio or video information or an amalgamation of both. There are some works by A. G. Hauptmann and M. J. Witbrock (2006) that use the verbatim data achieved from the text streams, or the optical character recognition or speech identification for segmentation. In work proposed by L.-Y. Duan et al (2007) it has been given that using usual features of advertisement blocks like frames and silence amid commercials to identify cuts and categorize...

The Evolution of Taiwanese Identity

...Taiwan could also fit under the “One China” world-view envisioned by the PRC. Indeed, the acceptance and recognition of same historical and cultural connections have kept the present PRC’s provinces bound together over such large distances to the north, south, and west. With Taiwan located off the coast of Fujian province, relatively close to the heart of the PRC’s economic boom, it may not be entirely obvious how the idea of two “Chinas” became plausible in recent time. Modern representations of Taiwan in cinema and literary fiction, however, shed light on the issues of Taiwanese identity and its evolution throughout its recent political and social history. These questions of identity can be examined in Huang Chun-ming’s 1960s era short story “The Taste of Apples”, where a Taiwanese family is exposed to influences of internationalism through both the Mandarin-speaking police officer and the American diplomat. When at the American hospital, the foreign nun speaking the local Taiwanese dialect indicated to the family “that their world had grown larger” (149). Here one can see the family as a representation of the isolated Taiwan of the past, and their interaction with the American and Taiwan government official as the effects of globalization. For the family, the introduction to Western influence is the tragedy of an automobile accident, which can be seen as a metaphor of modernization and is thus somewhat ironic. The Taiwanese police officer sums up the experience as follows:...

The Interaction Between Imagery and Allusions in Translating Chinese Poetry- Based on Tu Fu’s Poems

...The Interaction between Imagery and Allusions in translating Chinese PoetryBased on Tu Fu’s Poems Shih-ying Liaw Prof. Wang Linguistics and Translation June 18 2012 Shih ying Liaw1 Shih-ying Liaw Prof. Wang Linguistics and Translation June 18 2012 The Interaction between Imagery and Allusions in translating Chinese PoetryBased on Tu Fu’s Poems Though Chinese poetry has been translating for almost a hundred years, there are still many questions about the translation strategies and situations worth discussing. In this paper, the interaction between imagery and allusions when translating are discussed and the practical situation used when translating are presented. To discuss the interaction between imagery and allusions, the first thing is to identify and define each term. First is imagery. Imagery is thought to be the most important factor to the poetry. I use Ezra Pound’s word as definition because he is not only a pioneering translator in Chinese poetry and also a great poet. He says that “an image' is that which presents an intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time.” Further explanation is given by Professor Liu in “The Art of Chinese Poetry” by putting imagery into two categories. The first is “simple imagery,” which is defined as “a verbal expression that evokes a mental picture, which not merely picture in words but also arouses emotional associations and enriches the poetic context”. The Shih ying Liaw2 second category...
