Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States, is considered a hero of the Civil War, and rightfully so—he worked his way up to the top of the Union army’s hierarchy, seized Vicksburg, giving the United States control over the Mississippi River during the war, and accepted Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. However, even national heroes who are hailed for their successes have made mistakes. On December 17, 1862, during the crux of the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant issued General Orders No. 11, one mistake that affected the lives of American Jews throughout the entire country. The Civil War’s chaotic atmosphere highlighted General Ulysses S. Grant’s stereotypical view of the Jewish …show more content…
On July 26, 1862, Grant telegraphed an officer at Columbus, Kentucky, saying that officers should check all merchants’ luggage if they are travelling southward and turn them back if they are carrying gold. He stated in that telegraph: “Jews should receive special attention.” A few months later, on November 9, 1862, Ulysses S. Grant telegraphed Memphis the following: “Refuse all permits to come south of Jackson for the present. The Israelites especially should be kept out.” The next day, General Grant told his superintendent of military railroads to forbid all Jews from travelling southward, calling them an “intolerable nuisance” and saying that “the Department [of Tennessee] must be purged of them.” Ulysses S. Grant’s growing intolerance of Jews soon erupted in the most blatant form of anti-Semitism in United States history. Ulysses S. Grant likely reaching his breaking point when his father, with whom Ulysses did not have a good relationship, paid him a visit. Jesse Grant was involved with the Mack brothers, Jewish clothing manufacturers, and he came to request a permit from his son that would allow him and his business partners to buy Southern cotton. ...Veer Shah AP United States History DBQ Essay #3: “American period between 1860-1880” The historic period prior to the 1860s was the most underlying era in American society as it led to the bloodiest war in the American history, the Civil war. Prior to the Civil war, the American politics were sectionally divided between the Northern Republicans and the Southern Democrats. The political culture was almost saturated as both sections had realized that the numerous compromises would only provoke questions and dissimilarities between them, with the largely interfered question of slavery and suffrage. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 had been implemented as a nationwide direction towards admitting states with reference the 36° 30´ latitude line, either as a free-state (above line) or as a slave state (below the line). Despite of the temporary success of the compromise of 1820, it was repealed by the Stephen A. Douglas in 1854 in his Kansas-Nebraska Act. Likewise, the Compromise of 1850, created by the Great Compromiser, Henry Clay, was an effort to preserve the Union by settling the issue of slavery in the newly acquired territories from the Mexican-American War. Although it assured a temporary peaceful settlement between the sections, it failed to give birth to the Civil war and the rise in sectionalism. ...“Instead of being on the defensive, I would be on the offensive”: General Sherman’s March through Georgia 1   The United States Civil War was the bloodiest and most trying conflict in American history. Hundreds of thousands of American lives were lost on both sides of the war. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s march through Georgia to the sea was a brilliant strategic victory for the North that helped to end the war more quickly, all while preserving the lives of soldiers on both the North and South. All though his march was outside the general practice of warfare it is clear that the General’s movement through Georgia was the best course he could have taken given his circumstances. His capture of Atlanta and his subsequent march to follow is one of the most controversial issues of the war. At the time of the war it was commonplace for the military leaders to embed their troops in entrenchments that were nearly impossible to infiltrate. They would then rush their men towards each other in a bloody battle. General Sherman realized that attacking the entrenchments of the enemy was fruitless and killed too many soldiers. He went on a path of flanking maneuvers that helped get around these entrenched soldiers. He followed up this plan by attacking the economy of the South and breaking their resolve. The field of strategic management cannot afford to rely on a single definition of strategy, indeed the word has long been used implicitly in different ways even if it has traditionally been defined formally in only one. Explicit recognition of multiple definitions can help practitioners and researchers alike to maneuver through this difficult field. Accordingly, this article presents five definitions of strategy-as plan, ploy, pattern, position, and perspective-and considers some of their interrelationships. To almost anyone you care to ask, strategy is a plan-some sort of consciously intended course of action, a guideline (or set of guidelines) to deal with a situation. A kid has a "strategy" to get over a fence, a corporation has one to capture a market. By this definition, strategies have two essential characteristics: they are made in advance of the actions to which they apply, and they are developed consciously and purposefully. (They may, in addition, be stated explicitly, sometimes in formal documents known as "plans," although it need not be taken here as a necessary condition for "strategy as plan.")
