Waiting to Forget is by Sheila Welch. This touching realistic-fiction novel is based in the past and present. Waiting to Forget shows how siblings stick together. Waiting to Forget starts with TJ waiting in the emergency room, for his sister, Angela, looking at an old “memory book”. As Welch goes deeper into the story of TJ and Angela, we learn that TJ’s mother had moved from living in an apartment, when one day TJ’s mother hires a babysitter and when his mom didn’t come back for many hours the babysitter goes to a job interview. When a “strange” lady comes to the door and TJ opens the door, because he thought it his mom, she discovers TJ alone. After TJ’s mom gets the rights to TJ and Angela back they move to TJ’s grandmother’s house. On the way, his mom slapped Angela in the face. When asked about it, TJ, who said she fell off her rocking horse, and TJ’s mother, who said it was TJ who slapped Angela, had different stories. TJ, Angela, and his mom move out the next day after his mom and grandmother had a fight about TJ’s dead aunt. Then TJ’s mother finds a boyfriend and moves in with him. After a while TJ finds out that the boyfriend is abusive but when TJ brings this up to his mom she just says, “He gives us what we need.” When TJ wakes up one night and finds out that the boyfriend is a robber and has given Angela a valuable necklace to hide. TJ asked Angela about the necklace, she says that the boyfriend promised a parrot if she didn’t tell anyone. When TJ tells his mom about the necklace her boyfriend yells and hits Angela, then runs out. The cops are called, by the neighbors who heard the yelling. Angela acts like she just got done taking a shower. Neither TJ, Angela, nor the mom the truth about what happened.
