Defying Expectations Of Women In Little Women

... Defying Expectations From A Young Age In the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, the four March girls are all close in age and relation but so different when it comes to their personalities and attitudes. Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy are all loving sisters who journey from adolescence into womanhood experiencing many captivating moments along the way. Jo, unlike her “prim and proper” sisters, goes about life in a very different way than that of a typical nineteenth century woman. She recognizes her disparities and strives to be different when she says, “I want to do something splendid...something heroic or wonderful that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead. I don’t know what, but I’m on the watch for it and mean to astonish you all someday” (Alcott 147). This quote shows her determination to be something other than a domestic housewife. Jo March defies the traditional expectations of nineteenth century American women through her unladylike behavior and her unorthodox career choice. First, Jo demonstrates her unladylike behavior through her use of language, opinionated remarks, and choice of clothing. Unlike her three sisters, Jo March is clumsy, blunt, and very opinionated. She is not afraid to speak her mind and be different. In the novel, Jo is very opinionated with her feelings towards John Brooke. She conveys them to Meg saying, “‘He's dull as powder, Meg. Can't you at least marry someone amusing?’” (Alcott 312). This type of response is demonstrates Jo’s unladylike...

Louisa May Alcott Research Paper

... “We all have our own life to pursue, our own kind of dream to be weaving, and we all have the power to make wishes come true, as long as we keep believing.” This quote by Louisa May Alcott is a perfect description of her life. Although her family was engulfed in poverty, Alcott was determined to make an example of herself to others. On November 29,1832, Louisa May Alcott was born to Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Along with her sisters, Anna, Elizabeth, and May, Alcott was educated by her father, while their mother taught them the basics of Christianity. Bronson was a philosopher and teacher, and Abigail was a social worker. However, because of Bronson’s inability to provide for his family, Alcott and her sisters started working at a young age. Alcott spent most of her childhood in Concord, Massachusetts, but she moved to Washington, D.C. during the Civil war to work as a nurse. Alcott’s literary career started with short stories and poems that were published in magazines. She also published Hospital Sketches in 1863, which was based on letters she wrote home about her time in Washington, D.C. as a nurse. Some of her books were published under Alcott’s pen name, A. M. Barnard. Her most famous work is Little Women (1868), which is a partial autobiography of her childhood. During her lifetime, Alcott published over 30 books and poems that are still treasured today. She never married, and she died on March 6, 1888 of a stroke....

Personal Responsibilitty

...When working toward a successful life, personal responsibility is a vital cornerstone. The concept of personal responsibility is more than just being accountable for your mistakes, it involves being accountable for your actions at large, both to yourself and to others. When one is not willing to take responsibility for their own actions and advancement, the idea of personal growth becomes impossible. Accountability is the only path to true, lasting growth. In life, missteps and slip ups are inevitable, but without taking accountability for these they will just pass by as unheeded, missed opportunities to learn. Similarly, if one does not take personal responsibility for driving one’s own advancement, many opportunities will fall by the wayside and just drift by. Being truly honest with oneself and others about what you want and need is integral in establishing personal responsibility. This truth is the core of the “First Step Process,” which is outlined succinctly in Becoming a Master Student (Toft, 2011): “The First Step technique is simple: Tell the truth about who you are and what you want. End of discussion… The First Step is one of the most valuable tools in this book. It magnifies the power of all the other techniques. It is a key to becoming a master...

Importance of Mentoring in Nursing

...mentoring their peers, they are helping to promote leadership skills, teaching skills, and foster professional development for all nursing staff. The CNA (2004) states, “Mentoring involves voluntary, mutually beneficial, and long-term professional relationships among nurses if done effectively and respectfully. In this relationship, one person is an experienced and knowledgeable leader (mentor) who supports the maturation and education of a less experienced person, for example, new nurses and returning nurses (mentees) to the work place with leadership. There are so many opportunities for the seasoned nurse to teach new and returning nurses but because of often hectic schedules, staffing issues, and nursing shortages this often falls to the wayside. This can lead to lack of confidence, frustration, and feelings of being “lost” out in the work area. Nurses often streamline their duties to complete their shift in a timely fashion and opportunities to mentor or teach are missed. These missed opportunities would have provided the potential to increase the new staff’s knowledge base, assessment skills, or and confidence in their nursing roles. When these missed opportunities accumulate, it can often make the new nurse feel frustrated and overwhelmed...

...Isaiah Smith Ms. Coughlan English 0990 11:00 A.M -12:50 P.M 4-17-15 Teenagers and Jobs The pressure for most teenagers to work is great, not only because of the economy in the world today. Most of it is peer pressure to have some independence and freedom, and to have their own spending money on what they want. The most concern we have is when the part-time work becomes the main focus. However, working more than fifteen hours a week can be harmful for teenagers because it reduces their involvement with school. The schoolwork and benefits of the activities they are involved in tend to go by the wayside when teenagers are working long hours. As more teens filled the part-time jobs offered by malls and fast food restaurants, teachers have faced some increasing difficulties. The teachers have to give homework to students who really do not have time to do it and keep the attention of tired teenagers. Athletic teams and even school bands are losing the players due to their work schedule, and the students who work are not attending sports events. Too much working can cause kids to want more name brand clothes. Some parents claim that working helps teach teenagers the value of earning money and getting it on they own. If you think of it this is so true. It’s true that some teens are working in order to save up for college or family budgets. Majority of teens that are working blow all of their money on...
