CHANGING THE WORLD WITH WEB 2.0 AND CLOUD COMPUTING

“Strategies for expanding your personal intellectual capital using Web 2.0 and Cloud computing”

The Web 2.0 and cloud computing technologies have allowed each user to be a proponent of society’s growth and development. By making information more accessible and easier to store, these technologies encourage everyone to share their knowledge and maximize the use of internet to expand their own.

Web 2.0 has paved the way for the collaboration, interaction and sharing of information through the internet, turning passive viewers of websites to active contributors of innovative ideas and significant or vital information. It allows the active participation and contribution of internet users on their topics of interest, be it about business or about their hobbies.

Web 2.0 offers several ways of communicating online from blogs and wikis to video-sharing websites to social networking sites. Blogs have turned from simple online journals to sources of product reviews or description of events and/or places. Wikis have displaced hardbound encyclopedias making it easier to browse on a particular topic with just a click of a mouse or a few types on a keyboard as compared to scanning a thousand-page book. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have become sources of information and news from around the world and have allowed relationships to build, causing the world to shrink. Video-sharing websites, with Youtube as the pioneer, allow users to share their knowledge by uploading their personal videos and allow others to learn by watching them. In a nutshell, Web 2.0 has redefined communication. Communication evolved from telegrams to telephones to e-mails to instant messaging to social networking sites (facebook, twitter) and the list goes on.

Web 2.0

...Web 2.0 Web 2.0 is a term describing changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, and collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. The term became notable after the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end- users utilize the Web. Basically, the term encapsulates the idea of the proliferation of interconnectivity and social interactions on the Web. Tim O'Reilly regards Web 2.0 as business embracing the web as a platform and using its strengths. The features that encompasses the essence of Web 2.0 are building applications and services around the unique features of the Internet, as opposed to building applications and expecting the Internet to suit as a platform. Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more than just retrieve information. They can build on the interactive facilities of "Web 1.0" to provide "Network as platform" computing, allowing users to run software applications entirely through a browser. While Web 2.0 technologies are difficult to define precisely, the outline of emerging applications has become clear over the past year. We can...

...Five Different Web 2.0 Web Sites/Tools: 1. A weblog or in short a blog is a website for generating text, photographs, video or audio files and/or links on a daily basis. When it comes to students using this blogs for interacting, publishing and exchanging collective intelligence, the misusage or reliability issues come into picture because, not many a times it is recommended to rely on the information available in blogs. Also students may get attracted to unrelated information and may misuse and publish controversial or bad information online. I dislike blogs and I do not recommend this for academic purpose unless the students are trained on how to use them. 2. WiKi is a website that allows users to add, remove or otherwise edit and change the content available on line. I like this because most of the times the information may be updated or current updates must be uploaded and this website is making this possible. I have been browsing for information but I come across few sites that have outdated information and they are still available online. Updating information is a great idea but at the same time the fact that the users can edit the information makes it a little complex to think as they may mess with it adding unnecessary content. 3. Stu.dicio.us features are worth a like because students need to manage time and schedule it. The features like note taking, to-do lists, keyword link to Google and Wikipedia, grade organizer, social networking...

Web 2.0

...8 Checkpoint- Web 2.0 November 10, 2011 A short way to describe web 2.0, is that it is a term used to describe the second generation of content that can be viewed on the internet. In order to fully understand what web 2.0 is, one must have a basic knowledge of how the internet works, and a little about how things used to be. In the past, most web pages would consist of basic graphics, a few photos and a email link. The page would not change until the owner updated it, and only basic interactions could be accomplished. As technology advanced, many different programs allowed the internet to become more interactive; allowing visitors the ability to customize pages, add content and essentially make the internet work to suit their personal needs and tastes. Websites incorporated vivid graphics and animations, pages that updated with real time information, and the ability to search sites to buy products via electronic storefronts. The term Web 2.0 was coined to describe this ‘next generation’ of internet experience. Web 2.0 has not only allowed business to grow and expand via the internet, but it has spawned a whole new way for people to connect via social networking. There have been more advances in technologies, and creative ways to use technology to help users find products, services and businesses that they need. The drawback with so much customization and information that can be obtained via the internet is that an end user can have a hard time discerning what...

Web 2.0

...Web 2.0 XBIS/219 Web 2.0  How would you describe Web 2.0 to someone who has not taken a course in information systems? What are the advantages and disadvantages of Web 2.0? How has Web 2.0 impacted business? The best way to explain Web 2.0 to someone lacking the knowledge thereof, should first understand that Web 2.0 is not a new type of web, it is more of an enhancement of the web experience by a vast collection of information technologies and applications that allows web users to interact socially, collaboratively, and more or less the ability to participate with ease, as these technologies and applications encourage users to do so. Web 2.0 allows Web users to be a part of the development and growth of different websites and the web, instead of just visiting a website and browsing through its information. Different applications and information technologies include Wikis, Mashups, Tagging, Blogs and blogging abilities, Podcasting and video uploading, etc (R. Kelly Rainer & Turban,  2009). A few disadvantages of Web 2.0 is the fact that communication and sharing of information has now become unrestricted. This means that copyrighted material caqn now be infringed upon and even altered. Web 2.0 has made it to where users are more dependent on its technologies for research and information, socializing, etc. There are also a lot of unsecure websites that use Web 2.0 technologies and that poses a lot of threats as well, including accounts being hacked, spam, viruses...

Web 2.0

...Web 2.0 According to Wolcott (2012), “Web 2.0 represents an important shift in the way digital information is created, shared, stored, distributed, and manipulated, and it will have a significant impact in the way businesses use both the Internet and enterprise-level IT applications.” These protocols and tools make it easier to create online applications and encourage users to manipulate and interact with content in new ways (Wolcott, 2012). Some specific Web 2.0 information technologies and applications, categories of Web 2.0 sites, and web services and service-oriented architecture are: AJAX, Podcasts and Videocasts, Blog, Mashups, Real Simple Syndication (RSS), Social Media, Tags, Wikis, Aggregators, Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Web Services Description Language (WSDL), Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI ), and Extensible Markup Language (XML) (Rainer & Turban, 2009). Key characteristics of Web 2.0 are: Web-based applications can be accessed from anywhere; simple applications solve specific problems; value lies in content, not the software used to display content; data can be readily shared; distribution is bottom-up not top-down; employees and customers can access and use tools on their own; social tools encourage people to create, collaborate, edit, categorize, exchange, and promote information; and network effects are encouraged; the more people who contribute, the better the content gets (Wolcott, 2012). It creates new ways for people...

Realizing that there are many landscape designers and companies that capitalize in this business, this architect comprehends that he must be on the cutting edge to get recognized and sell his services. He can boast of completing many "gratis" jobs while completing his degree, and his accolades are many; it is time to start profiting from the toils of his education and marketing his skills. Marketing requires not only business savvy, but also mandates that the businessman has a considerable amount of information technology acumen in his pocket or the where-to-all of how to secure it. Using Web 2.0 tools and monopolizing on his enterprise associates, including those strong, weak and potential ties will help this aspiring landscape architect compete in a business that incorporates landscape professionals as well as yard maintenance individuals who claim to have the skills this entrepreneur holds. This landscape architect places promotional signs in his completed jobs, passes out business cards regularly, and provides services to civic organizations focused on community beautification, in an effort to create a positive corporate...

UnME Jeans Case Study Analysis Page 2 Summary UnME Jeans was a rising star in the world of junior denim fashion. The UnME brand focused on the individuality of teenage girls who coveted their designer-style jeans that featured glitter, jewels, and various forms of metalwork. UnME jeans were sold in more upscale department stores and specialty retailers and at premium price. ! Traditionally, UnME advertised to their target consumers using TV ads spots during popular programs for teenage girls, like Gossip Girl, American Idol, and One Tree Hill. They also took out full-page magazine print advertising in beauty and fashion magazines, as well as radio ads on popular stations. In addition, they had a corporate website and used online banner and display ads on the most popular websites for teenage girls. ! Margaret Foley, the brand manager for UnME Jeans, had trouble justify the expenses of advertising using traditional media outlets. Especially since the prices to purchase TV ads were increasing each year, despite declining TV audiences, and consumers’ who were skipping or delete TV ads from the programs they had recorded to watch later. In order to reduce costs, Foley asked the ad agency they were using to look into Web 2.0 social media options to see if there was a better...

Web 2.0 Intro

...INTRODUCTION Web 2.0 is the term given to describe a second generation of the World Wide Web that is focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online. In 2004, the economic hangover ended, and the World Wide Web began a new upturn. As more sober investors and more mature technology architects saw other ways to approach web business, things changed. Web 2.0 began, with a new second objective that went beyond broadcasting static brochures. Other improved functionality of Web 2.0 includes open communication with an emphasis on Web-based communities of users, and more open sharing of information. Overtime Web 2.0 has been used more as a marketing term than a computer-science-based term. Now more than just neat animations and company profiles, the web is also a universal channel where people can access remote software right through a web browser. Web 2.0 sites allow user to do more than just retrieve information. Instead of merely reading, a user is invited to comment on published articles, or create a user account or profile on the site, which may enable increased participation. By increasing emphasis on these already-extant capabilities, they encourage the user to rely more on their browser for user interface, application software and file storage facilities. This has been called “network as platform” computing. Indeed, while the web also remains a venue for brochures and general information about the world, it is now also a medium for tools and...

Web 2.0: the New Standard

...Web 2.0: The New Standard Allen Brooks Southern New Hampshire University IT 210 Web 2.0 is quickly becoming the new standard for internet-based content. This new implementation proves a slippery term to define, but its conceptual themes can be seen throughout the most content-rich web pages on the Internet. As an improvement upon the now surpassed web 1.0, web 2.0 provides users with an Internet “experience” rather than presenting them with a static webpage by integrating constant information updates, collective intelligence, and exploiting the immense benefits of networking effects (2007, O’Reilly). An example of the differences between webs 2.0 and 1.0 can be gleaned from a comparison of the differing approaches to the “software as a service” models of the now struggling to survive Netscape against the booming Google. In 2001, the so-called “dot com bubble” burst and destroyed a conglomerate of business in the process. While many technologists submitted that this was an indication that the Internet itself was “overhyped”, in hindsight, this collapse marked a shift in the cyber landscape (O’Reilly). Tim O’Reilly remarks that, “shakeouts typically mark the point at which an ascendant technology is ready to take [the prevailing technology’s] place at center stage” (O’Reilly). This conclusion yields some insight to the reason for the collapse: users had become bored with stagnant web content that simply presented static information in the form of sporadically updated...

Every type of sports team and league from Football teams, Bowling leagues, Billiards leagues, rugby teams, poker buddies, Golf leagues, Hey Jawhar, I know that you’re in school Studying Information technology. How would I take this idea and turn it to a web site where people from all over the world can interact based on the sports that they enjoy. That sounds really cool. What you should do is create a site within your store site where People can interact, Post and share pictures/videos ask for advice and sell their used sports equipment to each other. It would be what is called a web 2.0 Company. A Web 2.0 company is a company that has its foundation set in the web: The internet is its main platform and all other steams of the business stems from that main platform. Within that platform the user controls their data. I believe this to be one of the most important aspects of and Web 2.0 site. What do you mean by that? Control their data? A great example would be how on facebook you only see the post of who you have accepted as friends. This would be similar in the way that if your part of the foot ball and bowling community you wouldn’t see post for rugby. That’s interesting. It would almost be like Facebook and EBay combined but sports would be the concentration. Now the next important aspect would...
