Misunderstanding 1:

Who was the sender?
The sender was the owner of a telemarketing company I had worked for.
Who was the receiver?
I was the receiver.
What was the message?
The message was that I would be getting a promotion and raise if I were to relocate from California to New Jersey.
What channel was used to send the message?
There was a verbal agreement between myself and the owner.
What was the misunderstanding that occurred?
The misunderstanding was that I would not receive a raise and promotion until after 6 months of moving to New Jersey as opposed to receiving a raise and promotion right away.
How could the misunderstanding have been avoided?
This misunderstanding could have been avoided two ways: No alcohol and asking more questions on my behalf.
Question 1: What did you learn about the communication process from this activity?
At the time of this conversation, I was unaware of the communication process. When I heard “raise” and “promotion”, I quickly jumped at the opportunity to move up within the company. Moving forward, I will be more aware of the questions that need to be clarified.
Questions 2: What seemed to be the main causes of the misunderstandings?
The main causes of misunderstandings had to be a mixture of alcohol combined with not enough questions asked on my behalf.
