1) Describe a local land line phone system based on the following Landline Telephone Components: a. Local Loop - is the physical link or circuit that connects from the demarcation point of the customer premises to the edge of the common carrier or telecommunications service provider's network. b. Central Office - is an office in a locality to which subscriber home and business lines are connected on what is called a local loop. The central office has switching equipment that can switch calls locally or to long-distance carrier phone offices. c. Local Exchanges - is a regulatory term in telecommunications for the local telephone company. In the United States, wireline telephone companies are divided into two large categories: long distance (interexchange carrier, or IXCs) and local (local exchange carrier, or LECs). d. POP - is an artificial demarcation point or interface point between communicating entities. It may include a meet-me-room e. Long Distance System - a network of terminals and servers over a long distance, for example if your company has two different offices on the other side of the country, then you would have a long distance system. f. Fixed Line - denoting or relating to telecommunications systems using cables laid across land, as opposed to cellular radio systems.

2) Define and describe the following Telecommunications Network Components: a. Cellular Telephones: i. Voice - a telecommunication device that uses radio waves over a networked area (cells) and is served through a cell site or base station at a fixed location, enabling calls to transmit wirelessly over a wide range, to a fixed landline or via the Internet. ii. Data – Same thing as data but it does not transmit voice, it sends data b. Telephone Network Topology: i. Demarcation Point - is the point at which the public switched telephone network ends and connects with the customer's on-premises wiring. It is the dividing line which determines who is responsible for installation and maintenance of wiring and equipment—customer/subscriber, or telephone company/provider. ii. Equipment - consists of telephone lines, fiber optic cables, microwave transmission links, cellular networks, communications satellites, and undersea telephone cables, all interconnected by switching centers, thus allowing most telephones to communicate with each other iii. Access Networks - is the part of a telecommunications network which connects subscribers to their immediate service provider. It is contrasted with the core network, (for example the Network Switching Subsystem in GSM) which connects local providers to each other. The access network may be further divided between feeder plant or distribution network, and drop plant or edge network. i v. Regional/Metro Networks - is a network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic area or region larger than that covered by even a large local area network (LAN) but smaller than the area covered by a wide area network (WAN). c. Cable TV i. Broadcast TV - are encoding or formatting standards for the transmission and reception of terrestrial television signals. There were three main analog television systems in use around the world until late 2010s (expected): NTSC, PAL, and SECAM. ii. Community Antenna - increasingly known as cable TV, originally set up in areas of poor reception or where the choice of television services was poor and cable television could offer additional choices. iii. Network Access Point - was a public network exchange facility where Internet service providers (ISPs) connected with one another in peering arrangements. i v. Interface Device - is a hardware component or system of components that allows a human being to interact with a computer, a telephone system, or other electronic information system. d. Telecommunication Services: i. RBOCs - is a term describing one of the U.S. regional telephone companies (or their successors) that were created as a result of the breakup of American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T, known also as the Bell System or "Ma Bell") by a U.S. Federal Court consent decree on December 31, 1983. ii. Unbundling - split (a company or conglomerate) into its constituent businesses, especially before selling them off. iii. MSOs - is an operator of multiple cable or direct-broadcast satellite television systems. i v. ISPs - is a company that provides individuals and other companies access to the Internet and other related services such as Web site building and virtual hosting. v. Triple Play - is one in which voice, video and data are all provided in a single access subscription vi. Cloud Computing - the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.

...Week 1 Exercise 1. Describe a local land line phone system based on the following Landline Telephone Components: a. Local Loop The local loop is the physical wiring that connects you to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). This line can be a voice line, or it can be a data line. The physical wiring for the local loop consists of a pair of twisted copper wires that run from the telephone company's central office to the subscriber's premise and another pair of twisted copper wires that run back to the telephone company's Central Office1 b. Central Office A Central Office is part of the telephone network in your area. It is a building in which the phone lines in your home or office terminate and connect to a much larger switching system. In large metropolitan areas, Central Offices are more appropriately LOs (local offices), because they serve a local area. The term "Central Office" is from the early days of the telephone system when the local telephone company really did have only one central office in each area.1 c. Local Exchanges A telephone exchange is a telecommunications system used in the public switched telephone network or in large enterprises. An exchange consists of electronic components and in older systems also human operators that interconnect (switch) telephone subscriber lines or virtual circuits of digital systems to establish telephone calls between subscribers. Also referred to as the Central office. d. POP In the telephone system, the point...

...The project of upgrading the company’s operating systems on all of the desktop and laptop computers will be performed by the IT department. To begin the project, a specified team will be brought together to formulate the strategy for testing, verifying and implementing the OS upgrades. The group will be comprised of approximately 10 members of the IT department. The initial task is to gather all information needed to perform the OS upgrades. This includes but is not limited to getting an accurate count of all workstations within the company with a breakdown of desktop or laptop designation. Next is to identify the OS currently on the workstation. Third is to begin collecting the OS upgrade and creating the package to install on the workstations. Fourth is to implement the OS upgrade on a group of test workstations and verify that the upgrade process will perform as needed without errors. Once the testing is completed, a timeline will need to be created in which the upgrades can be performed throughout the company without disrupting normal operations. The timeline needed to perform the OS upgrades can be fluid so as not to completely isolate any one department and has the potential of being performed during normal business hours on workstations not being used. This has the benefit of reducing the time needed to carry out the upgrades. The drawback is that as the workstations are conducting the upgrade, they will not be usable until the upgrade is complete. The identified...

...DNA Worksheet Casey Goodfellow 1/25/13 Answer the following in at least 100 words: 1. Describe the structure of DNA. 2. How does an organism’s genotype determine its phenotype? 3. Describe each stage of the flow of information starting with DNA and ending with a trait. DNA is something that makes up who and what we are. It’s our genetic makeup inside nearly every cell in a person’s body. DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA). This paper will describe the structure of DNA, share how an organism’s genotype determines its phenotype, and in closing, the stages of the flow of information starting with DNA will be discussed. Well, DNA is made up of atoms bonded together. It is also a three dimensional structure which has been described as a double helix. According to Campbell, Essential Biology with Physiology, A molecule of DNA contains two polynucleotides, each a chain of nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of a nitrogenous base, a sugar, and a phosphate group. Nucleotides are joined together by covalent bonds between the sugar of one nucleotide and the phosphate of the next. This results in a sugar-phosphate backbone, a repeating pattern of sugar-phosphate-sugar phosphate. The name, DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid, with nucleic referring to DNA’s location in the nuclei of eukaryotic cells...

...It’s important to use systems analysis and design methodologies because many software projects have a 20% success rate. In order to reduce risk a structure should be applied to account for all of the company’s needs and concerns with a project. By using an engineering approach, you’re using proven methodologies which can be applied for future projects and each time your strategy can be tweaked and improved to perfection. Prototyping is part of the feasibility analysis phase of SDLC. A simulated prototype of the target system is created which provides a glimpse of what the main system would be like. In addition, this helps in pre-analyzing the behavior of the target system, known as a POC (Proof of Concept). In the section on choosing off-the-shelf software, eight criteria are proposed for evaluating alternative packages. Suppose the choice is between alternative custom software developers rather than prewritten packages. What criteria would be appropriate to select and compare among competing bidders for custom development of an application? Define each of these criteria. The criteria for off-the-shelf software is Cost, Functionality, Vendor Support, Viability of Vendor, Flexibility, Documentation, Response Time and Ease of Installation. In terms of Custom software developers you want to make sure that the flexibility and support can be achieved if you should decide to cut ties with the developer. Another words, you would want an open API so another developer can support...

...Material Week 1 Exercises Prepare written answers to the following exercises: 1. As a field agent, you must determine the cause of a disease outbreak in the Los Angeles, California, area. You discover that the disease originates from contaminated halibut. You write a report to your supervisor, which includes a description of the physical dimensions of the fish (length and weight). Your supervisor asks that you send the fish and a report about the fish (length and weight) to the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France. Because France uses the metric system, you must convert the figures for length and weight. Complete the following chart by converting the inches and pounds to centimeters and kilograms: |Physical measurements of specimen | |Length (in inches) = 36 |Length (in centimeters) | | |=91.44cm | |Weight (in pounds) = 20 |Weight (in kilograms) =9.07kg | 2. State the law of mass and energy conservation. Describe how you might demonstrate this law. The law of conservation of energy, is when the total amount of energy remains constant, but can change forms from one to another. The law of conservation of mass is when the total amount of mass remains constant, even if you change the shape or the chemical make up. I would demonstrate this law by proving how the energy and mass stays constant. 3. Adapted from Exercise 116 in...

...NT1310:Week 1 Telecommunications By: Kenneth Martin You are an IT Network Specialist and are required to develop the design of the company’s telephone system for its new building which will begin construction in a few months. In order to get a background which will help when developing the new system, your supervisor asked you to research the current Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) currently used by the company. You must research the system components and report back to your supervisor , the Telecommunications Manager, within a week. 1. Describe a local land line phone system based on the following Landline Telephone Components: a. Local Loop a local loop is the wired connection from a telephone company's central office in a locality to its customers' telephones at homes and businesses. This connection is usually on a pair of copper wires called twisted pair. The system was originally designed for voice transmission only using analog transmission technology on a single voice channel. Today, your computer's modem makes the conversion between analog signals and digital signals. With Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), the local loop can carry digital signals directly and at a much higher bandwidth than they do for voice only. b. Central Office In telephone communication in the United States, a central office (CO) is an office in a locality to which subscriber home and business lines are connected on what is called a local...

...Chapter 1 Problems and Exercises 1. By following the system analysis and design methodologies you will be able to answer questions for the end user because you are going to build the system and design it to the end user. For example you build a system for tracking inventory and train the managers how to use it so they know what inventory is available. You don’t want to build the system in a quick and easy format because then it might not perform up the tasks that are required of it. By using the engineering approach I will be using the input from the users of the system to build a proper system that will benefit the current and future users. Also it will allow me to use current tools available to make sure the programs are functioning as required. 8. Prototyping during the SDLC life cycle may be incorporated in any of the 2nd and 3rd phases. You would create the prototype during the 2nd phase and then revamp it during the 3rd phase, and in the final phase it would be implemented. I feel that these two styles do not really mix that well but if necessary you could use prototyping during the SDLC process. Chapter 2 Problems and Exercises Q3. I would say all 8 are still important but the top 2 that I would use to make the final decision is Vendor support and Viability of Vendor Vendor support is just what it says, the support that the vendor will supply with the building and implementing of the software. And Viability of Vendor is how long the vendor...

I read manga, play football, can do Trig in my head. My personality is random and chaotic and my military back ground gives me little patience for stupid people and incompetence. If I like someone I joke and seem to make for good company, and I say what is on my mind. I am impulsive and aggressive, sarcastic and at times highly caustic, highly intelligent and often lazy. I am Me. My goals in this class are few. First off, My goal is to pass with an A or B+. Secondary to that would be to get back to writing like I used to, free writing and enjoying it. Slight problem with that is I am borderline dyslexic, and if one didn’t know that words isn't easy to spell. Beyond those I don't have much hope or goals for this class. What I hope won't happen, no it's not what most will say or the expected of writing. My fear for this class is to have the creative fire of the Muses stamped out by ridged guidelines and harsh and limited formal tedious papers. Most English classes limit writing so much that there is no point to it. What creates anxiety for myself, I have a chronic habit of procrastination. I do papers...
