Critical Path

...Analysis & PERT Charts Planning and scheduling more complex projects The benefit of using CPA over Gantt Charts is that Critical Path Analysis formally identifies tasks which must be completed on time for the whole project to be completed on time, and also identifies which tasks can be delayed for a while if resource needs to be reallocated to catch up on missed tasks. The disadvantage of CPA is that the relation of tasks to time is not as immediately obvious as with Gantt Charts. This can make them more difficult to understand for someone who is not familiar with the technique. A further benefit of Critical Path Analysis is that it helps you to identify the minimum length of time needed to complete a project. Where you need to run an accelerated project, it helps you to identify which project steps you should accelerate to complete the project within the available time. This helps you to minimize cost while still achieving your objective. As with Gantt Charts, the essential concept behind Critical Path Analysis is that you cannot start some activities until others are finished. These activities need to be completed in a sequence, with each stage being more-or-less completed before the next stage can begin. These are 'sequential' activities. Other activities are not dependent on completion of any other tasks. You can do these at any time before or after a particular stage is reached. These are non-dependent or 'parallel' tasks. Use the following steps to draw a CPA Chart: 1. List all...

Process Improvement Plan

...statistical methods to determine the control of a process. Statistical process control (SPC) entails using random samples to assess and examine the differences in a process (Chase, 2006). It makes sure that the process operates to its full potential to produce a specific outcome. The following information will address a practical type of continuous improvement know as Statistical Process Control (SPC). In week one my process was driving to work. Taking control of these processes helps cut the total process down to about 14 to 18 minutes per day. SPC mostly involves using control charts to detect defective or changed services or produces. SPC may be broadly broken down into three sets of activities: understanding the process; understanding the causes of variation; and elimination of the sources of special cause variation. The process intervention begins to help at the end of week two, by week four the process was controlled. Control Charts Control charts are used to eliminate concern over variation over common causes. Through the control charts, variation because of special causes is identified, or the process capability is found lacking, additional effort is exerted to determine causes of that variance and eliminate it. The tools used include Ishikawa diagrams, designed experiments and Pareto...

...manner how high/low the level of inaccuracy of the process (and not explicitly the employees). SPC is part of TQM and is originally designed for quality control in manufacturing environment. Manufacturing corporations do quantify the limits of a manufactured product in measurable units (variables). The challenge when transposing this method to services industries is to quantify human actions, and appreciate the limits of that action. (Attributes) ‘When is a service good or bad?‘ How would you explain to a bank manager (background in operations= zero) the meaning of a p chart In statistical quality control, the p-chart is a type of control chart used to monitor the proportion of nonconforming units in a sample. The p-chart only accommodates "pass"/"fail"-type inspection as determined by one or more go-no go gauges or tests, effectively applying the specifications to the data before they are plotted on the chart....

Improvement in Customer Satisfaction for Orlando Rv

...will be to ultimately decrease the defects of the RVs being sold, which will increase the overall satisfaction of all customers and bring in more sales. The project to improve Orlando RV’s operations should be carried out and implemented over an eight-week period, starting immediately. [See Project Charter, page 3] Measure: To isolate the causes of Orlando RV’s problems, data was gathered from the inside to grasp a better overview of the current performance and see exactly where mistakes are being made in the process. The process flow chart [See Customer Flow Chart, page 3] helps illustrate the steps a customer goes through when making a purchase at Orlando RV. Included in this, is whether or not the customer returns to make a warranty claim for some defect their RV has after purchase. In reviewing the chart, the struggle a customer might have to experience if Orlando RV decided the warranty does not cover the damages becomes evident. In performing data collection, the frequency a customer returns to address a defect was recorded over a seven-week period [See Defect Check Sheet, page 4]. The data concluded a total of 30 defects in a seven-week period, averaging around four reported defects per week. During those seven weeks, Orlando RV made a total of 150 RV sales, equating to 20% of total RVs sold having some sort of defect. In comparison, a survey conducted from local competitors for benchmarking purposes established a...
