1 Arc welding - an overview
1.I History of welding
Methods for joining metals have been known for thousands of years, but for most of this period the only form of welding was forge welding by a blacksmith. A number of totally new welding principles emerged at the end of 19th century; sufficient electrical current could then be generated for resistance welding and arc welding. Arc welding was initially carried out using carbon electrodes, developed by Bemados, and was shortly followed by the use of steel rods. The Swede Oskar Kjellberg made an important advance when he developed and patented the coated electrode. The welding result was amazing and formed the foundation of the ESAB welding company.

The use of acetylene and oxygen made it possible to produce a comparatively high flame temperature, 3100°C, which is higher than that of other hydrocarbon based gas. The intensity of all these heat sources enables heat to be generated in, or applied to, the workpiece quicker than it is conducted away into the surrounding metal. Consequently it is possible to generate a molten pool, which solidifies to form the unifying bond between the parts being joined.

Later, in the 1930s, new methods were developed. Up until then, all metal-arc welding had been carried out manually. Attempts were made to automate the process using a continuous wire. The most successful process was submerged arc welding (SAW) where the arc is "submerged" in a blanket of granular fusible flux. The design presented here addresses a current need of the gold standard ETT by allowing for the passage of a larger bronchoscope through the inner lumen of the ETT while keeping outer dimensions constant. This design incorporates a flexible membrane with a wavy geometry to ensure a return to the neutral axis, thus allowing for even ventilation of both lungs. Flow tests simulating surgical ventilation conditions were conducted. These results confirmed that adequate air flow could be obtained independent of any pressure differences across the membrane. Tests of the prototype also confirmed that maximum instrumentation diameter was increased through this design when compared to a commercially available ETT with identical outer dimensions (35 Fr). Finite element analysis was conducted to determine the necessary thickness of the membrane for a safe design. One key design feature of the membrane is that its state of maximum deflection (2.1mm) does not significantly hinder airflow through the smaller lumen. ...Molding Methods Molding process is used to create intricate metal components. The mold material used to make these “molds” could be either temporary or permanent. Temporary molds are made up of refractory sands and resins. The temporary mold has to be broken to retrieve the cast.
