It all began in 1862, Settlers flooded the Dakota’s land, trying to push the Dakotas out and destroying everything in their path. The settlers took over their land and left the Dakota to starve and freeze. The settlers told the Dakota tribe that if they moved to their land they would pay them a large sum of money, so with no hesitation the tribe agreed to the deal and moved. Soon after the Dakota would learn the agreement was a scam. The leader of the tribe Little Crow decided to take action and start a war with the settlers to bring justice to his people. I believe Little Crow’s actions were justified, because he was trying to improve the lives of his tribe . One reason I believe Little Crow’s actions were justified is because, his motivation …show more content…
One of the Sioux doctors who came to help the tribe said, “Many died from starvation or disease caused by eating improper food. It made my heart ache. I remember distinctly of the agent giving that they ate it raw like cattle.” (Brown, 35)
This quote shows how poorly the Dakota tribe was doing on the reservation. Therefor without the help of Little Crow the famine would have continued and the tribe members would have all died. The final reason I believe Little Crow’s actions were justified is because, the Dakota tribe was lied to by the Settlers, which gave them every right to start a war. The Dakota’s were promised a sequential life on the reservation as well as a large sum of money from the Settlers. The Dakota tribe never received the money and they were forced into the culture of the settlers, for example the text states, “They set up missions with the intent of converting the Dakota to Christianity and teaching them skills they would need to live like white people.” (Brown, 37)
This quote shows how the settlers were intent on having control over the lives of the Dakota, and how they believed their way of living was

Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...

Dear Doctor--Here is one of the most carefully hewn stones in the second course of the foundation of a literary edifice which I have slowly and laboriously constructed. A Tale of Two Cities

...age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. There were a king with a large jaw and a queen with a plain face, on the throne of England; there were a king with a large jaw and a queen with a fair face, on the throne of France. In both countries it was clearer than crystal to the lords of the State preserves of loaves and fishes, that things in general were settled for ever. It was the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five. Spiritual revelations were conceded to England at that favoured period, as at this. 3 of 670 A Tale of Two Cities Mrs. Southcott had recently attained her five-andtwentieth blessed birthday, of whom a prophetic private in the Life Guards had heralded the sublime appearance by announcing that arrangements were made for the swallowing up of London and Westminster. ...

Onehundredyearsofsolitude

...Gabriel Garcia Marquez One Hundred Years of Solitude Chapter 1 MANY YEARS LATER as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice. At that time Macondo was a village of twenty adobe houses, built on the bank of a river of clear water that ran along a bed of polished stones, which were white and enormous, like prehistoric eggs. The world was so recent that many things lacked names, and in order to indicate them it was necessary to point. Every year during the month of March a family of ragged gypsies would set up their tents near the village, and with a great uproar of pipes and kettledrums they would display new inventions. First they brought the magnet. A heavy gypsy with an untamed beard and sparrow hands, who introduced himself as Melquíades, put on a bold public demonstration of what he himself called the eighth wonder of the learned al-chemists of Macedonia. He went from house to house dragging two metal ingots and everybody was amazed to see pots, pans, tongs, and braziers tumble down from their places and beams creak from the desperation of nails and screws trying to emerge, and even objects that had been lost for a long time appeared from where they had been searched for most and went dragging along in turbulent confusion behind Melquíades’ magical irons. “Things have a life of their own,” the gypsy proclaimed with a harsh accent. “It’s simply a matter of waking up their souls.” José...
