The two most significant social consequences of the First Industrial Revolution are urbanization and mechanization. Urbanization is the increase of the number of people who migrate from rural areas to the city. With the constant influx of people who moved to the city the problems of overcrowding and sanitation arose. With the lure of factory jobs and a better lifestyle the people who once lived out in rural areas were persuaded that there could be a better life in the city. One of the problems that were not anticipated was one of proper sanitation. With more people the problem of crowed conditions apply with more garbage, more sewage and more contamination. Another social consequence is that of mechanization. Mechanization is the process of removing people and animals from their jobs and replacing them with machines. Machines may offer the luxury of mass production but it is at the cost of human workers being unemployed. So like a domino effect, all the people who moved to the city for work in factories are now being replaced by machines. In turn you have overcrowded cities with a large number of unemployed, hungry and desperate people. Now these people can barely afford to live, eat or even take care of their animals, the same animals that were replaced by machines. The first Industrial Revolution contributed to the rise of capitalism because of the increase of factories and the mass production of materials. With the advent of machines to mass produce things such as cotton material, the owners of the companies were soon enticed by the profit that could be made. The only that stood in the way of making more money was the act of paying more workers. In turn factories and machines were manned by single crew members with long hours and no breaks. Everything became about production and how well you worked. Before too long

...THEMES IN U.S. & WORLD HISTORY GKE1 Task 2: Individuals and Institutions as Mechanisms of Social Change Part A Martin Luther was a monk who lived in Wittenberg, Germany. The two most significant changes that he made were challenging Church policies and he sparked the Protestant Reformation, a religious movement. Both of these changes are political and social changes. Luther wrote the “Ninety-Five Theses”, in the Ninety-Five Theses” he listed the reasons why he believed the church was corrupted due to their abuse of power. Luther posted his “Ninety-Five Theses” all around the city and on the church. His “Ninety-Five Theses” reached people and the pope as well. Through this act Luther gained many followers, but he was eventually excommunicated from the church and declared an outlaw. Being excommunicated meant that you would be cut out from contact with the church. If you were declared and outlaw this meant that it was against the law to do any service for Luther. Despite Luther being declared an outlaw, his teachings and ideas lived on. Luther’s work rapidly spread because he was able to use the movable type printing press to create copies of his “Ninety-Five Theses”. As Luther’s “95 Theses” spread, more people began questioning the power of the Church and questioned its policies. This lead to the Protestant Reformation. The Protestant reformation was a time where people decided to stop following church policies and norms. Nuns left their monasteries and convicts. They...

...Martin Luther King Jr. made a dramatic impact on the world. One of his most notable and greatest accomplishments was the push he made for desegregation. “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood” (King Jr., 1963). He spoke out loudly on the issue of segregation, and helped to bring about gradual and positive change. Even after his death, large steps have been made in equality for all people regardless of race. He also was instrumental in showing that one person can stand up and make a difference in a big issue. There have always been people that stand up and defy something they may see as unjust or upsetting. However, there are not as many people that started with little to no backing. Martin Luther King Jr. built a movement that has stood the test of time with organizations like the NAACP who attempt to continue his good work. He cried out loudly against the evils he saw, and changed the world forever. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly” (King Jr., 1963). Gandhi is another great example of a man who stood for...

Industrial Revolution

...“Industrial Revolution” GKE Task 4 WGU Indiana The Industrial Revolution was the change from hand crafted products and small farming operations to machine manufactured products and large scale farms using more mechanical equipment. While the birthplace of the revolution was in Britain around 1760, one similar took place in America from 1790 to 1870. Britain had tried very hard to keep the monopoly on its industrial technology, however this couldn’t last forever. Some of the British saw the potential of profitable opportunities and took this knowledge abroad (Industrial Revolution, 2013) With any major change in a society has consequences. One social consequence of the Industrial Revolution was the division of social classes. Before, there were the very rich and the very poor. As factories and industry made production of goods more efficient, these goods were cheaper. People could now afford to buy everything they needed and still have money left over. They could now afford to enjoy leisure goods instead of only buying what they needed to survive. Thus, the emergence of the middle class. This class consisted of anyone with a decent job, shop clerks, accountants, managers and so on (Introduction to the Industrial Revolution). While the production of goods at a faster rate and larger quantity made them cheaper and more available had its advantages, the division of society had negative consequences as well. The use of technology on farms meant fewer...

Leaders for Social and Political Change

...Leaders for social and political change Michelle Clark WGU Themes in U.S. and World History GKE August 1, 2013 Leaders for social and political change Over the course of history, there have been many battle stories, both political and social of how nations have become what we know today. Among these stories are those of social injustices, hatred, and racism, as well as personal and political struggles. From the many injustices our predecessors have overcome, leaders have emerged. Individuals who will forever be revered by millions and will hopefully continue to inspire our youth. Nelson Mandela and Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. are two leaders that have greatly impacted not only their country, but the world. Both of these leaders had a significant impact on the people of their cause, both in a political aspect as well as for social change. In 1948, The White Nationalist Party empowered South Africa, instituting apartheid in an attempt to ensure white domination, control over the economy and its social systems. There were three racial categories for South Africa; Whites, Colored (mostly Indians or Asians, or multiracial), and Blacks (African decent). Non-white people were impoverished, humiliated, and oppressed. Black people were required to live in rural areas and carry a passbook containing their fingerprints, photo and information on access to non-black areas. If they were caught without a passbook, severe penalties ensued. On March 21, 1960, a group marched...
