Magnificent Microprocessors, MultiMedia Software & MicroLaser Printers (4M) is a computer

manufacturing company and retailer located in Dallas, TX. The company sells microprocessors, printers

and supplies.

and supplies. 4M has 200 employees which include 35 administrative personnel, 55 repair technicians,

60 sales & csr, 40 shipping & warehouse personnel, 10 janitorial.

A. Develop a social responsibility strategy for your chosen client which includes the following

components:

1. Environmental considerations and recommendations

Since 4M manufacturers and sells its products a few environmentally smart options can be taken into

consideration. The environmental considerations that will be utilized are the Reduce, Reuse and recycle

method.

Reduce: 4M will minimize cost by purchasing recycled materials and creating products that reduce

energy consumption by 40%. Also we plan to reduce the amount of waste the company disposes of

during its manufacture process. Lastly, 4M will eliminate the use of toxic materials used to manufacture

products

Reuse: 4M plans to implement a product reuse program that will prolong the use of equipment for

repair and create refurbished products for retail products such as monitors, processors, printers and

refills for print cartridges.

Recycling: 4M will use an Upcycle method that will convert low value materials in to higher value

materials such as offering customers a 10% to 20% discount on new purchases if they recycle all used or

broken products and boxes. This incentive will enable 4M to utilize recycled goods to create new cases

and eco-friendly packaging for our products new products. Materials that cannot be reused in our

facility will be recycled to another industry for reuse or it will properly dispose of according the EPA

standards.

By utilizing the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle method the company will not only save on production cost

it will be a great benefit to the environment by turning would-be waste into reusable goods that can be

utilized in more than one industry..

2. Ethical leadership considerations and recommendations

4M plans to hire a professional in experienced in environmental ethics in order to steer the

organizations culture to a community building, eco-friendly atmosphere. The ethical leader will develop

a Performance measurement system that will track metrics such as:

* Employee Morale

* Boosting employee morale begins with changing the confidence level that the employee has with

the company. Once the employee’s confidence level is increased the feeling of positivity, morality and

satisfaction will increase.

* Employee Retention Rate

* The retention rate for the 4M is very important because it displays the overall satisfaction of the

employees. Also, the 4M retention rate is very important for business because it saves the company

money by promoting within in addition to spending less money on employee training & Human

Resources

* Whistle Blower Protection

* 4M will promise their employees Whistle blower protection for internal issues that may arise

throughout the company. If an employee reports his/her supervisors are stealing money by increasing

the cost of products, that employee will be protected by the company if the supervisor decides to use

anything against them.

* Transparency

* One of the man ethical considerations that will be utilized is transparency. Transparency will allow

4M to share or reveal any plans, actions and decisions that the company chooses to make.

Transparency gives employees and the community confidence in the company from operations to

financial management.

* Charitable Contributions

* 4M will make Charitable Contributions to support local and national non-profits. Our company will

develop programs that will support programs such as Autism Speaks to donate new computers to kids

on the Autism spectrum. Also, 4M will support programs that will provide growth and wellness in the

communities in which we operate while promoting recycling in the world in which we live. Not only will

these charitable contributions benefit those who are in need but it will promote a positive opinion of

4M and the ethical policies that 4M implements.

* Social Responsibility

* 4M will encourage acts of social responsibility to all employees by making them aware of the

positive and negative impacts of the world that surrounds them and educate them on what corrective

measures to take in order to change the negatives into positives. Such as encouraging employees to

unplug phone chargers when not in use to conserve energy or encourages employees to be good to the

earth and always recycle. These 2 examples are just a couple of social responsibility roles that can be

utilized to develop a culture of recycling by the entire organization of 4M.

While these areas will be continuously monitored and improved through training and feedback the

selected ethics leader must be also able to answer the following questions to make sure that compliance

is being maintained such as:

* What are the status of our ethics performance and what is being done to improve?

* How accurate is 4M’s performance measurement system and what can we do to improve it?

* Are the metrics selected by 4M enough to change the culture and atmosphere of 4M or do we need

to implement another metric system that will be better suited to accommodate the company in the

direction that we are going?

Once trust has been built throughout the organization then environmental considerations can be

considered such as encouraging employees to work together inside and outside of the work place. As a

recommendation a recycling program will be implemented that encourages employees to recycle at

their homes and also to bring their lunches and reuse or recycle their containers. Also, employees will

be encouraged to purchase recycled supplies and recycle used supplies to the original manufacturer.

4M will participate in Reduction of paper products while producing written records and/or elimination

of wasting paper products by utilizing various ways of written communication such as email or other

electronic sources. The Carpooling Program will encourage workers to carpool with other employees to

save on gas and to eliminate pollution.

As these requirements of performance measurement is met and the ethical leader develops a plan to

execute this recommendations an employee environmental incentive program should be put in place to

further encourage employees to become more environmentally friendly. As an Ethical leader, the goal is

to the change the culture and environment of a corporation by changing the outlook of its employees

through trust and motivation.

Sustainability considerations and recommendations

Sustainability is something that is able to be saved rather than wasted. The 4M approach to

sustainability would be to produce products that are cost efficient and environmental friendly by

encouraging consumers to be more environmentally conscious.

Internally, the sustainable approach enables 4M to cut cost by purchasing raw materials and producing

products at a cheaper price with recycled goods. Also, being sustainable will encourage change the

ethical culture of the company by inspiring employees to make conscious efforts to save the planet and

become more aware of the environment that surrounds them.

Externally, sustainability will enable the 4M to provide quality products to their customers at a lower

cost while allowing them to make a contribution to saving the environment. By appealing to consumers

through low prices and noble acts 4M will also increase sales which will increase profit. 4M will succeed

in making the world a better place by using eco-friendly materials and properly disposing non-hazardous

materials to produce goods for the consumers.

Legal and regulatory considerations and recommendations

As a producer of electronic and chemical goods that are potentially hazardous to the environment, the

4M company has set a standard practice to stay in compliance with the Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA) by making every effort to reduce the effects on the environment that of the products that

the company produces. To ensure that the company is in compliance with the EPA, 4M will follow 3 acts

The Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 provides EPA with authority to require reporting, record-

keeping and testing requirements, and restrictions relating to chemical substances and/or mixtures.

Certain substances are generally excluded from TSCA, including, among others, food, drugs, cosmetics

and pesticides.

The Toxic substances Control act will provide assurance to the government and the public that

environmental and health effects of any chemical substances from 4M will be properly contained and/or

identified while operating with certain hazardous materials. Therefore, we will take 3 main steps to stay

in compliance with the Act such as:

* Alert governmental agencies (the EPA)

* Alert the public

* Take corrective action to stop harmful substances from affecting the public and take preventive

measures in the future to make sure that 4M stays in compliance with the Toxic Substances Control Act

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) give EPA the authority to control hazardous waste

from the "cradle-to-grave." This includes the generation, transportation, treatment, storage, and

disposal of hazardous waste. RCRA also set forth a framework for the management of non-hazardous

solid wastes. The 1986 amendments to RCRA enabled EPA to address environmental problems that

could result from underground tanks storing petroleum and other hazardous substances.

4M will use the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act to be a guide for our waste management

program. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act will allow 4M to:

* Reduce the amount of hazardous or nonhazardous waste that is produced

* Conserve energy and waste by recycling

* Take preventative actions to ensure that waste is disposed of properly in order to protect the

environment and human life.

The Clean Water Act (CWA) establishes the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into

the waters of the United States and regulating quality standards for surface waters. The basis of the

CWA was enacted in 1948 and was called the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, but the Act was

significantly reorganized and expanded in 1972. "Clean Water Act" became the Act's common name

with amendments in 1972.

4M will utilize The Clean Water Act to stay in compliance with the EPA and as assurance that the

company will not dispose of hazardous substances into rivers, streams, lakes, oceans and other bodies

of water that can cause a major impact to humans and the environment. Therefore, 4M will follow 3

steps that will enable the company to stay incompliance:

* Initiate a waste disposal tracking process – this process will track waste from the point of origination

to the point of final destination whether from 4M to the landfill or 4M to the manufacturer

* Recycle products back to the 4M factory so that the waste never leaves the facility

* Prohibit the use of water to dispose of waste from the 4M Plant.
