Made in the Image of God
What does it mean to be made in God’s image? There are hundreds of books on the subject matter written, as we know as the “Imago Dei.” To put it differently, the theological term used to denote the metaphoric relation between God and humanity that has its roots in Genesis 1:27. Is this scriptural text based on reason, emotion, walking erect, moral accountability; how is it that human being are like God? This is a profound question, and it is important to realize that an image is made to image. And so, if God made us (human beings) unlike all the other animals in His image, one would suggest that images are created to set forth the reality. That is to say, the reality is God and human beings are the image. God created man to show God. God created little images (humans) to talk, act and feel in a way that reveals the way God is. God did not create humans as the end of self; however humans were created as the means …show more content…
Psalms 82: 6 states, “I have said, you are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.”Benson’s commentary interprets the meaning of this scripture as such: “I have given you my name and power to rule your people in my stead; and all of you — Not only the rulers of Israel, but of all other nations; (for the powers that be are ordained of God, Romans 13:1;) are children of the Most High — Representing my person, and bearing both my name and lively characters of my majesty and authority, as children bear the name and image of their parents.” In this paper, I will endeavor to expound on the meaning of “made in God’s image” from a biblical

...Biblical Worldview Essay September 16, 2015 When we were created as humans we were made in the image of God. Genesis 5:1 states “This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him” (KJV). We are not only made in his image but we are to have a personal relationship with him daily, to know him for ourselves. To humble ourselves and seek God’s face. However this is something that is a continuing process. As we turn from our wicked ways and surrender all to God then we start to transform into the “Image of God”. Not just physical, but spiritual as well. And this should be displayed in our profession and for all the world to see. Patience, love, kindness, respect, and understanding will certainly play an important role with my chosen vocation. My pursued degree is Psychology with a cognate in Christian counseling. Being a counselor means that you have to listen and respect the opinions of other. It means giving Godly wisdom to those who seek me for help. Not my wisdom, but the wisdom given to me by the Holy Spirit within my profession. God’s image should always be displayed if you profess to be a Christian, Especially when you’re in the field of dealing directly with adults, children, or families. Knowing that I am made in God’s image will help me to interact with those in my profession with respect. Weather a client or coworker I must treat everyone how I would want to be treated. Theology Paper

...University, I was unsure of what the class was trying to teach me. Though I knew how I am and what I believe in it questioned my knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. I knew who He was and why I and others believe in Him but I did not know in depths what it was really like until I started to read more about Him. My reflection is on two topics that I have l have learned the most about in this course. The first topic that I would have to say I feel the most passionate about is Mankind and the Image of God. The second topic that I feel exceedingly passionate about is Heart. Part One Theological Definition The Image of God is classified as something that is a physical illustration. We are all created in God’s image. When I read this in the book I felt very strongly about it, “the image is something in the very nature of humans, in the way they were made. It refers to something a human is rather than something a human has or does. By virtue of being human, one is in the image of God; it is not dependent upon the presence of anything else.” (Erikson page 532). The text can mean that humans are made in the spiritual form of God; humans are created in the Lords image. Biblical Foundation In the Biblical text it stated that beyond Genesis 1:26-27 “the image of God is something that is a physical representation.” In Genesis it is stated the humans/mankind are created to represent Jesus Christ on earth. Humans will be the leaders in the Lords eye. “Then God said, Let us make human beings...

Humanity and the Need for Divine Grace

...be in chaos. No one can see that it does not matter the color of skin, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, etc. that we are all made by God and for God. Pick up the newspaper and we see that our world is out of control. Many theologians have voiced their views on humanity and the need of grace over the years. Today I can see where we may question that humankind has been created in Imago dei, the image of God. “So God created humankind in his image.”[1] John Wesley stated that the image of God can be summed up in three dimensions; the natural image, the political image and the moral image. [2] I question John Wesley’s summation that the image of God can be summed up in the dimensions of natural, political, and moral image. I will explore through other theologians if this assessment is viable. I will also use those same theologians to assess the idea for humanity to need, want and receive grace from God. “The concept of the imago Dei has been widely recognized as central to a Christian understanding of human beings, yet the paucity of biblical references has left the way open for a wide variety of philosophical and theological interpretations of this notion. “[3] Natural image of God according to Wesley’s sermon, The New Birth, is simply stated as “reason,” “will,” and “freedom.” [4] Some say that the most obvious definition of imago Dei refers to the physical existence of humans. God made humans to look like God.[5]...

Reflection Theology

...Reflection: Image of God I have often wondered in my Christian walk what it truly means to be created in the image of God. When reading the account of creation in (Genesis 1:26) on the sixth day, God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness”. Thus, He finished His work with a “personal touch.” Then He formed man from the dust and gave him life by sharing His own breath (Genesis 2:7). Consequently, man is unique among all God’s creations, having both a material body and an immaterial soul and spirit. Meaning we have a soul and spirit and live in a body. But what does all this really mean? Having the “image” or “likeness” of God means to me, in the simplest terms that we were made to resemble God in every aspect of our lives. It's interesting to note that the two words used for image and likeness are also used in Genesis 5:3 which talks about how Adam had a son "in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth." Seth was in the image and likeness of Adam, just as Adam was created in the image and likeness of God. The Scripture says that “God is spirit” (John 4:24) and therefore exists without a body. However, Adam’s body did mirror the life of God as it was created in perfect health and was not subject to death. Dominion: When I consider what God says about dominion, my first thought was that God wanted me to be the boss, as in bossing people around, do what I say” but that is not the dominion God was speaking of. He wants us to maintain...

Biblical World View Essay

...Biblical Worldview Essay Being created in God’s image means, in essence, that we were made to resemble or represent him. We were made to be creatures of patience, kindness, and forgiveness; all virtues explained in Christianity. Although these virtues are found in the Bible, they should also be common sense to most people. The phrase “treat others the way you want to be treated” shouldn’t be something that one hears once in their life. As an educator, one has the power to show and explain to children how to be a functioning member of society and how to treat others. Young children’s minds absorb information with great ease and the things they learn about how to treat others will follow most of them for the rest of their lives. The Bible has been called the “Word of God”. What that means is God’s message was sent from Him to prophets to be written down and kept as a journal for how He would want people to live and essentially represent him. Many of these values, such as patience, kindness or forgiveness are common sense but not everybody learns these things or do not understand them. As an educator we are given the chance to help children learn these values at a young age. Kindergarteners and first graders have a mind that absorbs information so efficiently that any information given to them will be remembered for years to come. As creatures made in God’s image these values need to be taught; a person is not born knowing these things right away. Educators are given the chance...

Education is such a great encouraging and life altering career which offers me many opportunities to live a proficient way that does not only honors God, but shows unbelievers and believers God’s lasting love.  Educators are planned professionals motivated on teaching our children. Teachers are also good at helping heal the children, and sometimes it heals ourselves.  As we were created in the image of God who is a great teacher, he gives us the capability to heal and teach trust to children and people in the name of Jesus.  As being a teacher, I have the exceptional pleasure of touching lives on a profound and personal level.   Integrity and dependability are two things that will allow me to assist others through my profession and worshiping our AMAZING GOD!!!!.    Integrity Integrity is the excellence of being truthful and obligating strong ethical values. ...is a season and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die…” (NRSV). Alongside this theme, there is the well-known theme about life being vain, “a vanity of vanities,” a mere chasing after the wind. Missed, sometimes, in the midst of this gloomy, almost despairing perspective is another motif: that life is a gift from God and that the good things of life—food, drink, work, play, and love—are to be enjoyed. Beauty is part of them. [Q] What does this text teach us about beauty? ➢ How should we live in relation to the beauty of God’s creation? In the article, Stackhouse says that evangelicals generally don’t see the need for aesthetically pleasing church buildings because, they argue, the money could be better spent on evangelism or helping the poor. He thinks that Jesus’ acceptance of the extravagant gift of perfume from Mary (John 12) counters this pragmatic bent. [Q] What do you think? Teaching point two: The splendor of creation is a reflection of its Creator, for God is beautiful. Both the beauty of God and of God’s creation should lead us to worship God in the beauty of holiness....

Anthropology

...Anthropology What is Anthropology? Anthropology is defined as the study of human nature and how humans are set apart from the other animals. In this paper it is my goal to not only go deeper in the meaning of this topic but also to look at it through the eyes of Christianity. I will be touching on tough subjects such as sin and what causes sin. Along with when we do sin what are some of the consequences we face because of that sin. I also want to go into some detail about the physical characteristics of both male and female, and the relationship between both of them. Finally we have to talk about the concept of being created and whose image we were created in. In my case I know I was created in the Image of God and I will explain to you how I know each and every human to ever live was created in that exact image. If we are to study this idea of Anthropology we first need to think of the concept of where we originated from. With this being said we first need to look at the creation story. Now in Genesis 1:1 it says that “God created the heavens and the earth.” Now we have this concept that God who always was is and will forever be created this earth. God created all the plants in the ground to all the birds in the air. Everything you see, taste, touch, and feel God created. Some of you might be wondering well I am eating a piece of cake right now that my grandmother made how could God have possibly made it when I watched my Grandmother bake it herself. You then need to step back...

Judaism

...What does it mean to be a “chosen people”? How can this concept generate hostility? Does this response reflect something in one’s own understanding or experience rather than perhaps the actual truth of the matter? To be a chosen people originated from the one true God of Israel bringing them out of the bondage of the Egyptian pharaoh. Israel was the chosen people of God because they were the descendants of the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob whose name was later changed to Israel which mean ‘to wrestle with God’ After God changed Jacobs name to Israel he also gave him a blessing. Israel later was led out of Israel by God and within the twelve tribes one of them was the tribe of Judah which today are known as the Jews in modern Judaism. This can create hostility because of the position and offense that some could take on the claim. Many today that are spiritual or believe in God also seek a close relationship and approval from God. So such a claim could and has led to much animosity and violence between various groups. In my own understanding of a chosen people and the history of the Judaism’s belief in it is that Israel would later become a type of spiritual body and not so much the physical blood born nation that descended from Jacob. Why is the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem a pivotal point in studying Jewish history? This is a pivotal point in study because it marks a time in which Judaism changed and the canon of scripture was in process of...

Worldview

...the way we see he world. While this is a simple definition is goes beyond just how we see the world. As stated in the Popular Encyclopedia of Apologetics “worldview is marked by the guiding premise of evaluation.” (pg. 498) It would be good to start with “who are we?” This is a very common question that many of us will ask throughout our lives. The simple answer to this question is: we are His creation. Genesis 1:27 show us that we are his creation: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” We see that the bible tells us two times in this verse that we are created in God’s image. Since we are created in God’s image that means that we are his creation and that we are perfect in form since God is perfect. Not only did God make us in him image but also see in Job 33:4 that He gives us the very life that we have; “The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” Without God we are nothing but with God we are perfect in His image and that through him we are given life. As we go throughout our lives and within our work place, to have a grasp of who we are in Christ, it makes it much easier to live. We can be comfortable knowing that we are love by Christ while others may not like us. Since we are loved by Christ and have that identity we can also who this same love to others even when it is hard. There are times at my job that people may not like me because I try and do the right thing...

Christian Worldview

...shown to be true for the entire universe.(Denton, 1986) So when Christians claim that the God of the Bible created all the basic entities of life and the universe, some will ask what seems to be a logical question: “Who created God?” The very first verse in the Bible declares: “In the beginning God ... .” There is no attempt in these words to prove the existence of God or imply in any way that God had a beginning. In fact, the Bible makes it clear in many places that God is outside time. He is eternal, with no beginning or end. By very definition, an eternal Being has always existed—nobody created Him. God is the Self-Existent One—the great “I Am” of the Bible. He is outside time; in fact, He created time. Think about it this way: everything that has a beginning requires a cause. The universe has a beginning and therefore requires a cause. But God has no beginning since He is beyond time. So God does not need a cause. There is nothing illogical about an eternal Being who has always existed even though it might be difficult to fully understand. You might argue, “But that means I have to accept this by faith because I can’t totally understand it.”(Orr, 1887) We read in the book of Hebrews: “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). ( Holy Bible, KJV) What kind of faith is Christianity then? It is not blind faith as some may think. In fact, it is...

Integration

...Thiago DeSouza Psychology and the Bible Liberty University Abstract Integration for many years has been a topic of discussion between psychologists and Christian leaders. The debate between the two disciplines has been whether or not the two can coexist together or if the two disciplines should never merge. Epistemology, cosmology, and philosophical anthropology lays down the foundation for integration. Both disciplines seek to understand human behavior and both seek to fix what appears to be broken within humanity. Both disciplines seek for truth. Psychology seeks for truth through science and what has been observed, whereas the source for truth for Christianity is found in God through His Words and His Works. The two may not contradict. There are several models of integration and they look to explain what the relationship between psychology and Christianity ought to be. The Allies model, which is discussed in more depth, holds the view that truth is found in God’s Words and Works and that God is sovereign over all things. Integration Paper The integration of psychology and Christianity has been a topic of discussion for many years and will be for many more years to come. It is important that this discussion is not put aside but rather be openly discussed among members from both disciplines. There are many models within integration and they all offer their own perspectives on the relationship between psychology and Christianity. One is not necessarily better than...
