What to Eat when you’re Broke First off, I would like to honestly say I thought this was some kind of article I would not be interested in and would probably read it without taking any consideration and just winging this summary. But no, as I started reading this article, I realized that I was taking in what the author, Daisy Luther was talking about. She actually answered a bunch of questions that I always had coming and going in my mind about nutritional facts, junk food, healthy food, etc. There were words I did not understand so like what Ms. Sara said, I googled it to have a better understanding of the article. I am really angered at these companies that add such disgusting and unhealthy “ingredients” into the food that most people buy. But I also believe that I should be angry at myself and others for being careless to not read food labels to educate ourselves more on the dangers of what we consume in our bodies. I may also like to add about the video my class and I watched last week about the mom talking about nutrition and a lot of other things to, it angers me so much how America the supposedly, “greatest country in the world” actually allows some food, snacks, & drinks to be legal when a lot aren’t proven to not do harm to your body! And we have a bunch of other countries that actually do make them illegal; I mean what’s up with that America?! I remember reading in chapter one how the top three leading causes of death in America is by heart disease, cancer, and stroke and why is that? Because of our behavior, our lifestyle choices influencing our health risks! Some people have it coming if they know what it is they are consuming but a bunch of other people does not know what they are consuming and that’s one of our biggest problems because we take and consume not caring about what goes into our bodies,

Argument of Definition

...and that is why depression can often lead to suicide. Some people may mistake sadness and depression for the same thing because they do have similarities. Sadness is often how depression starts out. Sadness can also be associated with grief. Grief is the response to a loss of someone and is associated with sadness. More people should look at sadness and grief as the same instead of sadness and depression. To know if you have depression, a diagnostic needs to be made by pointing out symptoms. Dr. Kramer believes that there are nine symptoms; if you have five out of those nine then you are depressed. The symptoms include: depressed mood, hard time having fun, no energy, can’t sleep, eating a lot, no desire for physical activity, feeling worthless, can’t concentrate, suicidal thoughts (Valiunas). All of those may seem like signs of just being sad, but as symptoms of depression, they are prolonged much longer. The physical characteristics of depression are what really set it apart from sadness. People who are depressed usually have a significant amount a weight loss; about 5% of their body weight is lost. A change in someone’s appetite is very important to notice because it can help spot depression early. When you’re sad...

Personal Narrative: A Short Story

...It was a new house, of course I was going to be nervous. As I sat up to go get a glass of water, I heard something scurry across the hallway. My whole body froze, it was like I was paralyzed. There was no way I was going out there, who knew what that sound was! I quickly sprung up and frantically locked my door, stumbling back to my bed. I knew I was being paranoid but Elijah seemed a little strange, and he always seemed to be watching me. After a restless night I walked out into the kitchen, I saw Elijah just standing next to the window, staring out at the empty backyard. He looked frozen, like he was stuck in a trance. He slowly turned to me and a sinister smile came over his face. His eyes seemed to turn completely white, the ends of his lips curling in such a manner, my heart to pop out of my chest.I ran to my room and reached for the lock, but it was broken. Someone ripped out the new door handle I had put in, I looked back to see Elijah sitting on the couch, like nothing happened. “Oh good morning!I thought you were still asleep. There's some coffee on the counter, help yourself.” I slowly nodded unable to comprehend everything that just happened. Although I was craving coffee, I didn’t know if I could trust what he had...

Anger and Forgiveness

...Anger and the Healing Power of Forgiveness CED117 Abstract Anger and the decisions surrounding it can destroy relationships. This paper focuses on the root causes of anger and ways to express it in appropriate ways. It also focuses on the role of forgiveness in moving anger from an emotional reaction or learned behavior to an intellectual activity. I’M ANGRY. YOU’RE ANGRY. Anger is a killing thing: it kills the man who angers, for each rage leaves him less than he had been before - it takes something from him. ~ Louis L'Amour Anger is present all around us. We have a world filled with road raging motorists, angry parents, angry children, and angry teenagers. Everywhere you look there seems to be anger at someone or something in the world. Anger gets a bad rap though on so many fronts. Anger can be a helpful emotion to alert that needs or desires are not being met. However, anger can also sabotage and eat away at our happiness if not handled or if expressed in less than productive ways. SOURCES OF ANGER Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. ~ Buddha Anger is considered a primary emotion. Other emotions such as resentment and hate can contribute to or derive from anger. The source of all this emotion can be just about anything. Anger is a signal that some need is not being met, that some desire has been denied. Finding yourself angry is not an uncommon thing. It seems that much of our modern lives tend to breed...

Marketing Essay

...INTRODUCTION Chocolate consumers feeling guilty for the wrong reasons means that as a chocolate consumer once they eat the chocolate they feel guilty afterwards. Why is that? That is because at the time they eat the chocolate consumers have a craving, or a mood to eat the chocolate and then afterwards feel guilty for eating it. Their guilt starts with I shouldn’t have eaten that I am on a diet, or I shouldn’t have eaten that it will make me fat and these are common guilt feeling consumers have after they eat chocolate. However in fact chocolate is not as bad for you as people say. Scientists have revealed that eating chocolate - in reasonable amounts - makes you feel emotionally better and so improves the smooth running of your body's endorphins. It even protects against heart disease. (Mail Online 2012) As a chocolate consumer myself I have sudden urges or cravings to eat chocolate or if I am feeling stressed or unhappy I turn to chocolate. That is because not only does it taste good but it is a psychological feeling that if I turn to chocolate it will make me feel better and in fact not feel guilty eating it. However as Cadbury is a well marketed company and chocolate consumers are highly familiarised with the company when buying chocolate consumers turn to Cadbury to satisfy their needs, that is why when Cadbury turned to use palm oil instead of coca in there products, consumers did not react as badly to the change as they still would have bought the highly known chocolate...

Not Your Everyday Hero

...heros. Hercules has strength and courage, so he must be a hero. Superman saved a whole city, so he has got to be a hero. What about the everyday hero? The hero that doesn’t expect a reward for their good deed. The hero that does something because it’s just the right thing to do. Who determines who a hero is? Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Tall or short, skinny or fat, and even black or white. In the novel A Lesson Before Dying, the hero of the story cannot fly, he does not have the most strength or courage and he hasn’t saved any lives, much less a whole city. The hero in this story is a black man - charged for murder. Throughout A Lesson Before Dying Jefferson, an uneducated black man, is found guilty of murder for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A white man died, so the logical reasoning during the 1940’s must be that a black man is guilty. From the moment Jefferson’s defense attorney stated, “‘Why, I would just as soon put a hog in the electric chair as this’,” Jefferson and the majority of all the white men living in the Bayonne, Louisiana believed Jefferson was a hog who was going to die in the chair (Gaines 8). While Jefferson is sitting on death row, Grant Wiggins is sent by Jefferson’s godmother, Miss Emma, to make Jefferson walk to “the chair” as a man - not a hog. During the first few visits by Grant to Jefferson, the responses and actions Jefferson says and does are not very hopeful. Although, in time Jefferson will undergo a transformation. A transformation...

With its balanced mix of urbanity, natural beauty and history it is considered as the most accessible vacation getaway and refuge for those seeking a quiet life far from the bustling Manila metropolis. Cavite is a coastal province situated approximately 9 miles (30 kilometers) south of Manila. It is composed of 20 municipalities and 3 key cities – Trece Martires City (provincial capital), Tagaytay City and Cavite City. The geography of the province varies differently, from flat and coastal in the north and west, to mountainous and hilly in the south and east. Its close proximity to the capital makes it highly urbanized especially in the low-lying municipalities of Bacoor, Imus, Dasmarinas, Kawit, Cavite City, and General Trias where various industries thrive. But in the towns south of the province, agriculture is still the main livelihood and boasts a great amount of preserved forests and wildlife. Corregidor...

Wait—let’s stop there. To be honest, I kind of cringe at the thought of this being a weight loss book, because I firmly believe that we are so much more than numbers and that what really matters in life is who we are, not what we weigh. But I understand that you probably picked this book up because you’d like to be healthier and weigh less. I get it! I am very grateful that you are here, and I am excited to share my story and what I’ve learned from working with thousands of women just like you. What’s so unconventional about it is that it will tell you to stop dieting, to eat what you love, to ignore the numbers on the bathroom scale, and to change the way you think about controlling your weight. And, unlike most books about weight, we won’t be spending tons of time talking about what to eat. Instead, you’ll learn about balance,...

...CASE 27 McDonald’s and Obesity THE PROBLEM Governments and influential health advocates around the world, spooked that their nations’ kids will become as fat as American kids, are cracking down on the marketers they blame for the explosion in childhood obesity. Across the globe, efforts are under way to slow the march of obesity. In the United States, roughly 30 percent of American children are overweight or obese. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 64.5 percent of Americans tip the scales as overweight or obese, the highest percentage of fat people of any country in the world. However, adults and kids in other countries are catching up. THE WORLD The World Heart Federation reports that globally there are now more than 1 billion overweight adults and that at least 400 million of those are obese. An estimated 155 million children are overweight worldwide including 30–45 million who are obese.1 In many countries, the worst increases in obesity have occurred in young people. About half a million children in Europe are suffering classic middle-aged health problems because they are too fat. Obesity among European children has been on the rise over the last 25 years. The number of overweight children in Europe did not change much from 1974 to 1984; then the rate started to creep up during the next 10 years, and it exploded after 1995. The Drive by Burger My Decisive Moment

...on fire. A parachute brigade of firefighters, known as smokejumpers, was dispatched to put out the blaze. Wag Dodge, a veteran with nine years of smokejumping experience, was in charge. When the jumpers took off from Missoula in a C-47, a military transport plane left over from World War II, they were told that the fire was small, just a few burning acres in the Mann Gulch river valley. As the plane approached the fire, the jumpers could see the smoke in the distance. The hot wind blew it straight across the sky. Mann Gulch is a place of geological contradiction. It is where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains, pine trees give way to prairie grass, and the steep cliffs drop onto the steppes of the Midwest. The gulch is just over three miles long, but it marks the border between these two different terrains. The fire began on the Rockies’ side, on the western edge of the gulch. By the time the firefighters arrived at the gulch, the blaze had grown out of control. The surrounding hills had all been burned; the landscape was littered with the skeletons of pine trees. Dodge moved his men over to the grassy side of the gulch and told them to head downhill, toward the placid Missouri River. Dodge didn’t trust this blaze. He wanted to be near water; he knew this fire could crown. Crowns occur when flames get so high they reach into the top branches of trees. Once that happens, the fire has too much fuel. Hot embers begin to swirl in the air, spreading the fire across the prairie...
